Taekkyun wasn't banned because it was so deadly, and tkd DID NOT come from taekkyun. They tell you this way, but look and compare the movements if you will, one soft and circular movementl, the other tense and straight. The early tkd masters except very few did nothing to incorporate taekkyun into their martial art. There were only like 3 tkd martial artist who actually made some effort to learn taekkyun, but all of them moved to U.S and didn't incorporate taekkyun into tkd.
@Minsang1st actually the occasion that led to the ban was the killing of an armed japanese soldier by an unarmed korean who used taekkyon. that is why it was banned.
it was not a nuclear weapon, but it was at least inconvenient for occupiers. also itf taekwondo does incorporate both taekkyon and shotokhan karate. you can see the influence of taekkyon in the backward movements all itf practitioners use. you can also taekkyon in itf kicks. wtf tkd does not have taekkyon
@dragonbalzy Can you tell me the source of where you heard or found about the story? I've read many many documents and articles regarding Taekkyun written by the students of master Song such as Do Gi Hyun, and I have never heard about any Taekkyun practitioner killing a japanese soldier. Also, be more specific other than saying that you can see taekkyun kicks in itf taekwondo. Just because kicks look similar doesn't mean they are related.
@Minsang1st similarities can be seen in tkd side piercing kick and taekkyon side kick, in the itf turning kick, and taekkyon (roundhouse?) I don't know what they call that in taekkyon, in the itf tkd waving kick, and a similar kick used in taekkyon to guard against kicks to the groin and low kicks to the leg. itf waving kick has the same purpose. the itf vertical kick (outward & inward) has similarity to taekkyon kicks as do sweeping kicks and also hip and shoulder throws.
@Minsang1st I believe I saw that story, years ago in a tkd times article. This is a little embarrassing because that info is not from a primary source, so it is basically groundless.
I'll try to see if I can get some sort of verification link to that story and post it you.
@dragonbalzy Are you referring to the sine-wave by backward movement? Sin-wave in itf taekwondo is basically movement of bobbing up and down in between the techniques to add more power to technique and it is not similar to poom balb ki at all. Poom balb ki has many purposes and creating power isn't the main purpose so clearly they are different techniques. According to itf taekwondo, it can create up to 12 times the power. It also differentiates tkd from karate.
@Minsang1st Every movement in itf taekwondo is preceded by a backward motion, in order to gain momentum, and power. I understand taekkyon has a similar concept.
Sine wave was as outgrowth of that idea which was created by general choi. He added sine wave to the earlier concept of backward motion. As I said the taekkyon influences are quite clear as are the shotokhan karate influences. They are differences between itf tkd kicks and taekkyon kicks. itf kicks snap more.
@Minsang1st the influences of taekkyon in itf tkd are so clear, even in the various forms of sparring used in itf tkd, for example model sparring. pre-arranged sparring done in two speeds, first fast and then slow. The same type of sparring is seen in taekkyon, by the way itf kicks show both a korean influence, in the kicking concepts and a japanese influence, in the snap of the kicks. itf tkd is a synergistic mix of both styles. it's truly a gr8 martial art.
@dragonbalzy Towards the end of Joseon dynasty, Taekkyun was mainly passed down as folk game. The model sparring and pre-arranged sparring that you see are all that people put in during the late 20th century. It's like saying that wrestling has many different model sparring. Also, as I said above be more specific with what kind of taekkyun kicks you see in taekwondo. Taekkyun kicks are continuous and circular where tkd kicks are more linear and snap kicks.
@dragonbalzy I agree with you in that Taekwondo is a great martial art. I'm a itf taekwondo practitioner myself. However, Taekwondo is taekwondo. There isn't much difference between wtf and itf and I'm pretty sure because I transferred to itf from doing about 2 years of wtf. Also, just because some kicks look similar doesn't mean that they are related because there are only so many ways to kick with same structured 2 legs on human body so similarities between styles is inevitable.
@Minsang1st there is much difference btwn itf movement and wtf movement.
itf movement almost always starts with a rearward motion. that is not true of wtf motion.
itf kicks are also different which can be seen in itf turning kick vs wtf round kick, itf side piercing kick vs wtf side kick, itf downward kick vs wtf whip kick, etc. the two arts are quite different IMHO.
i do wtf taekwondo and my taekwondo teacher said our specific style is moodukkwon and if you look it up moodukwon is a mixture of self taught taekkyon and chinese martial arts
Taewondo is supposed to be mostly of karate with a little bit of taekkyon, which makes it focus more on the legs.
Of course if you want to be good in olympic taekwondo, you do more taekkyon. I would want the taekwondo bodies to mix taekkyon into taekwondo since they claim taekwondo comes from taekkyon.
wow, there are lots of baseless assumptions being posted here.. firstly, im a practioner of capoeira and taekwondo and have researched both styles extensively. the taekkyon stepping is similar but also very different to the ginga and there is no influence either way. second, taekwondo did not come from taekkyon. it came from shotokan. did some of TKD's kicks come from TK? maybe but i dont think so since TK wasnt exactly florishing before the japanese occupation,it was almost dead after it.
none of the kwan founders ever practiced taekkyon. thirdly, breakdancing did not come from capoeira. founders of breakdancing admit to never seeing or training in it. im iclined to believe them since there were only 2 mestre's in New York, just getting started. I live in a small town and we've been here 10 yrs, affiliated with the university, have an academy on main street, commercials on tv..and there are still people here that have never heard of capoeira..
I myself took TKD and from my knowlegde I learned that taekkyon is the founder of TKD. However since it was forbidden to learn most of anything korean, the koreans had to teach taekkyon secret. I wouldn't be surprise however that TKD has some influence from shotokan, since the TK pratictioners had to teach japanese base martial art in regular bases. Really Japanese wanted to annihilate everything korean during so called their "emperium" era.
actually taekkyun was a style founded in korea but nobody knows when and when it was found be to so deadly they prohibited its use but some people kept evolving it. Taekwondo was a different style.
CAPOEIRA looks pretty and flash, but as a martial art, it would be one of the weakest. A block and counter attack would render it pretty useless, as it's random and sporadic fighting style is only show. Kung fu and karate do it in heads up.
they didnt ban it because it was deadly. the japanese banned all native korean practices and tried to supplant them with japanese. martial arts, school system, government..everything.
thats correct the japanese tryed to wipe out korean culture, but taekkyun was also considered to be the most deadly martial art but thats not why it was banned
They are dancing FAGS. Just watch the Protector, with toyn jaa lol. Capoiera is only effective against dumbasses. There are no dangerous punches or grapples just werid fucking kicks, all you do block and push and ground and pound, you don't need technique to fuck up some backstreet boys lol
Capoeira is a useless slave style that is simlar to this style.Capoeira has extra unnessary movement even less hand to hand combat than Taekkun,Capoeira is like 55% kicking and 45% breakdancing.
there are two types of Capoiera. One is Angola, which is more traditional and fighting based. The other is Regional, which is more aerial and dance like. What your'e talking about is Capoiera Regional. if it was useless, it wouldn't have been outlawed in 1890 for its danger.
I guess you've never actively gone and tried to pick a fight with a real capoeirista. They had MMA fights in Brazil long before they came here. Apparently capoeiristas do quite well. They're very hard to grab ahold of and are quite good in close quarters. Of course they're good at striking from a distance, but the most important thing is that they're very unpredictable. Throws, takedowns, elbow techniques, etc, are taught at the advanced levels.
Taekkyon is a traditionnal martial art of Korea, and although it may look similar to Capoeira there is no proof that it is derived or related to Capoeira...
both martial arts have a different history in two far distant places of the world and both have many different techniques.
break dancing came from capoeira, when mestre jelon and mestre accordeon brought it up from Brazil in the late 70's early 80's. It was developed over the past 400-500 years by Afro-Brazilians descended from the slaves brought over from West-Central Africa. There's a lot of anthropological, cultural, musical, and visual evidence for this. Taekkyun was developed in Korea (it's on the other side of the world). I think ya need to think a bit before you respond.
Aren't those arabesque style shoes? Maybe Capoeira and taekkyon are related in some way. Well at least the post 1700 version.
Since the earliest form was used in warfare, and war secrets were always well sort after by the muslims of the middle ages, it could have trickled out and taught to the slave soldiers in the muslim armies. And perhaps modern capoeira mixed with the Angolan style. Then again...
@Siddthartha your ignorance is astounding, Capoeira is neck deep in spirituality, clearly you dont know this as you have only 'seen' capoeira. you have neither practiced or read about it. Further more... find a capoeira master, tell him/her they are just dancers, film what happens to you, and post it on youtube.
@sevenherzt13 but taekkyun's game has a contact (push) in any time you want (it is free style, like in taichi tuishou, for example!) when a capoeira has'nt contact in it's training method -- like in dance. where is my mistake, logically? i have some expirience in other MA, and that is what in base of my opinion.
@Siddthartha your opinion is wrong because you don't know enough about capoeira.
Capoeira being a dance is a popular misconception. the misconception comes from people that don't actually do capoeira.
As someone who does capoeira, I can tell you that Taekkyun and capoeira are almost identical in terms of principles,is very similar in movement and yes capoeira is indeed full contact.
@sevenherzt13 `internal` is not about `spiritual` --- it's about complex work of your neurs and muscules inside contact with another player. (excuse me for bad english)
@albertmn12... you are dumb as fuck... Capoeira is the cultivation of african martial traditions that evolved in Brazil during the years of slave trade. This is why capoeira is referred to as an 'afro-brazilian' martial art. get your damn facts straight
