the choreography and the orchestration of this scene is absolutey stunning. How they managed to film this and keep time with the movement of the wind and the balloon, while still keeping the same lighting is beyond me. the fall from the rope is very impressively done too. (it was a random guy that fell)
Actually, you're the fool, because I was saying he could have easily jumped when everybody else did and have a softer landing than everybody else. You're an arse.
which is exacly what ended up happening - but obviously the old man wasn't thinking logically. you would never simply leave your child or grandchild in a rogue balloon by themselves. you would fight for them.
ill settle this: the book states that the guy that died was John Logan and he was a father in Oxford. as a father, it was his duty to save the boys life even though he didnt know the kid. tbh i didnt like the book and the film is A LOT different to the book.
I haven't seen the entire movie, just this bit so I can't say anything about how good it is, but boy did they mess up in this scene. It says clearly in the text "a huge GREY balloon" but I'm pretty sure the balloon that floats by is RED, not grey.
The opening sequence is pretty faithful to the book. After that, the movie has many major changes from the novel, none of which are improvements. The movie of McEwan's "Atonement" was more faithful to the novel (albeit condensed) than was the case here.
@GemzieR Then why the hell did you take an English literature course? By all means, continue; maybe you'll get to enjoy such page-turners as Clarissa at University.
@Kelvinian Can't even remember what I put. I love english and it takes me away from the science (Medical Biochem at university actually, not a time-waster course)
hey is there anyone that read the book and would like to help me with a book report? i am desperate! its supposed to be a written task and it should consist of the following parts:
1.Bibliographical data
2. Classification
3.Topic
4.Summary of the content
5.Message and Problem
6.Personal Evaluation
I hope some of you is really good at this kind of thing. It would be so much help.
The movie is not very good, alas...even though this scene and the trailer lead you to believe it would be. The character of the wife is given short shrift and the motives of the main character's pursuer became overtly gay.... which would be fine, except that's not what McEwan had intended. And the main character himself, based on his conversations at a couple of dinner parties, isn't very sympathetic. It's a terrific book.
I just re-read the opening chapter from the novel and can honestly say that it is one of the most gripping pieces of fiction I've ever read.

The bloke was lower down than all of them...if anything he would have had a softer landing!

not really. as if the guy would just bail and leave his grandson/son - i forget which - to just float away.
what a ridiculous thing to suggest
pjsingleton21 2 years ago
It's an air balloon, not a passenger jet. It'll just float down again.

it was a pretty understandable decision

says in the book he was in a state or temporary paralysis brought on by intense terror.

Ah that made more sense.

The book is ridiculously repetitive. I'm reading it for A-lvl and it's really getting on my nerves.

well tbf it wouldn't be stalking if he only followed him once....and anyway give it a chance, it gets better...

I think the best bit is this balloon bit and it kind of goes downhill from there...the ending with the gun is just terrible

why did the kid not get out> or why did any of the men there not pull him out sooner?they had tons of chances

That's exactly what haunts the main character throughout a lot of the novel.
