The strat has better Djent. The alder body gives it a brighter and clearer tone than the Mahogany body of the RGA8, not to mention pickup difference. RGA8 might sound better with a pickup swap tho. Still, a 7 or 8 string with a Basswood body is prolly the best guitar for DJent IMO. RG2228 for example. Still, your choice of guitars still depends on what sound your aiming for.
Pod farm eats shit, the response time is good with the line 6 gear, but for recording you can use any line 6 interface with guitar rig, it's got a lot more options, an actual decent interface and takes midi input, make the switch bro
@liberatethegrave Currently I prefer Lepou's amp VSTs coupled with ReCabinet 2 for a good rhythm tone but then again my preferences change time to time. That said, I agree with you about POD Farm not being very good by itself. At least for metal rhythm tones.
Personally, I felt the strat was a little too tinny for me. Either way, you'd have to do some post work with them both anyway. Kudos on modding your strat to sound that baddass, though!
I think you made a few good points here. The first being that Ibanez sucks and their pickups are awful. The second being that you shouldn't let yourself be fooled into thinking that just cause you bought a brand new Ibanez 8 string that it automatically means you will have that cutting edge Djent tone. I've been playing metal on strats for 10 years and never felt like I was held back by my equipment when searching for my ideal tone. Awesome video, Dude. Very informative!
of couese the stratocaster has better tone compared to the stock pickups in the ibanez. switch to cold sweat bareknuckles or lundgren M8 in the ibanez and you will get a lot more djentier tone :)
@buttholesurfer101 Seems like the price depends on the hardware you want to buy it for. For my pod studio gx it was $24.95 but for ux2 (for example) its $49.99. Weird.
@zedchuva that guitar doesn't have EMGs in it. it has those shitty ibanez stock pickups. with emg would sound great because of the scoop of those pickups. or with blackouts or bareknuckles or lungreen pickups. M8 to be more precise. any way rock on dude\m/
since you're working with actives in the 8 string best to get blackouts for a more agressive tone as the EMGs are cancelling a lot of the hum you probably want. They dont require any wire soldering either. But that and maybe another string brand GHS , Dunlop , D'Addario maybe.A lighter string gauge will add more hum as well, but dont go too light.
lordabrxias i agree with u a 100% on what u said and if he put money in to the RGA8 hes lil 6 string would be shit to the RGA8 SO TO COME PAIR it to that lil shit guitar u got going the one u worked on man
What helps the strat, other than the superior electronics, is the smaller magnetic field of the pickup. The smaller field lends itself to the 'tighter' feel.
My uncle has a Squier strat (by Fender) Affinity series, when you tune that guitar down to drop-C you can hear a nice and powerful djent, despite is has the cheap stock pickups.
@FokasSk8er best to get everything to save some money , the effects all sound the same but i found metal shop had a few amp simulations on it that where good, for example the Angel one also known as the ENGL powerball and it was a very aggressive amp.
RGA8 for sure just change the pickups man,,,,,,,,,u did a lot of things for stratocaster to get the sound u want,,,,cmon RGA8 change pickups that's it DONE.............
my money was on the strat at first because i use a p90 in the bridge with a humbucker in the neck for my setup. i love the extra harmonics you get with the single coil, and the middle position sounds incredible for cleans. especially when i add the ehx knockout pedal.
My Gibson SG can dish out some good djent tones on it. But any guitar really can do it. People mostly dismiss a lot of other guitars based other there looks. The Strat to seem to have the more djent sound to it, but the RGA8 came close.
@brando18guitarplyr yes well i'm sure when axe fx was first becoming popular people like you were complaining about the tone not being real and that they should use real tube amps. point is you'll never except someone else's work just because you think you know what good tone is. use what you got and don't knock this guy just because his computer program might be only thing he has available. i saw your pic w/ gilbert. congrats! but that doesn't mean you know everything about guitar. peace bro
@xlambxofxruinx You are absolutely right, Tone is all a matter of taste, but I really dislike digital sounds because you always lose signal, that´s the truth. You can hear it when he plays the RGA 8 @1:44 When he hits the string all of the signal just goes dead, and that means he is losing signal, just like people who use a noise gate, that fucks up the sound, I am not saying I know about what good tone is, but I do know that real amps will always sound better than a pc program.
it's the pickups in that RGA8, they are horrible. You got Dimarzios in the strat obviously it's going to sound better than LO-Z's or w\e the fuck they call them. You're also comparing 2 different tone woods, Mahogany Vs. Alder...Put a Lundgren M8 set on that Ibanez and it will destroy the strat.
@metallica5252 I think what he was trying to go for was that they ARE different guitars. He doesn't seem to be implying in any way that they should be perceived as the same guitar with some mystical difference that provides a more 'djent' sound.
@LordAbrxias if the strat had stock pickups then I wouldn't of cared so much, but he put money into that strat for that sound, why not do the same for the RGA8?
@metallica5252@FokasSk8er It was drop A - regardless of the fact that I played New Groove. And I mentioned drop G# in an older comment because FokasSk8er asked me about drop G#. End of discussion.
video title is a little misleading.... given that the stock pickups in the RGA8's are known to be muddier then Mickey Thompson 'mudders'. Would like to see another vs video between these two once you upgrade the stock crap LZ8 pups though ;)
@kodoku42 Thanks man, i really want to learn to do my own songs like you do it.. sorry for my bad english, i have some quesions to ask you. the first one: where can i get the EQ and the compressors that you use in your mixing?. the second one: where can i download the impulses that you use. and the final: what pc do you have (specifications). sorry if my question is a little bit annoying. @musicguitarlessons I agree about the price, it has gone way up from what it was originally. RGA8 is good for it's price though. I've just had some bad luck with my guitar. Anyway if you're getting the RGA8 the 2011 model has improvements over the original.

the fender strat always had the twangy sound, funny i come across this because i thought about testing this and the sound from the strat was amazing it literally hit the jackpot
ive just posted a demo of some low tuned metal riffs, it's all made with virtual instruments in FL studio but sounds pretty realistic, have a listen tell me what you think!
as long as your equipment(pedals, pedalboards etc) is digital it doesnt matter if you play with a Fender kitty edition. It's all about the alterations your signals goes through. On the other hand, if you have say a messa boogie, and all is analog, then you pay attention to stuff like coils, guitar, strings etc etc...
@kodoku42 Yeah. On a 27" sevenstring I'm putting 13-65s with a 70 for seventh for F-Standard all the way up to drop-Ab and drop-A. Unfortunately, DR would only make up to a 70 for their "Tight-Fit" round-wound line, which I much prefer over your typical hexa-wound, I really wanted a 75.
@kodoku42@DanteLeblanc That's nothing, I personally use a 75 gauge on my 25.5 scale guitar tuned to A-flat. Shorter scale guitars need thicker strings at lower tunings in order to remain tight and playable, "normal" gauges would just flop around at those extreme low tunings. Also, note on the video, the RGA8 has CRAP stock pickups, they're not even EMG's. Swop the pickups with decent ones and it will make a HUGE difference in my opinion.
would you mind going into a bit more detail about how the double gate/compressor works? When I gate it to get nice cuts/stops, I lose power/sustain, not sure how to make it all work
Wanna hear the best opinion? the better one depends on what tone you're aiming for.
Certainly RGA8 have a greater depth (on lows, good for breakdowns) and your strato has more mids (good for string skipping and chords).
There's no paradigm in Djent that tells you "Use this tone", it simply depends on what you want as a whole for your song.
So, I would use both of them, each for a different song that best matches the feeling you want to expose.sorry for my english, did you like my opinion?tks
@thiago88smart Yeah, they both have their distinct properties altough I would still change those RGA8 pickups. But you have a good point. I'm actually suprised about how much discussion this video has started. But in retrospect this comparison was quite blunt and narrow.
@thiago88smart points like that always bring long discussions... everyone like to expose their very single opinions when it comes to comparisons (mainly music/equipment)... its like to discuss religion or politics =P its actually up to you to choose. good luck man, you play preetty well stay like that you'll get a lot of enjoyment and mind development. (and pussies). over and out.
Hey I've always wondered this, but what does the tape around the top of the strings on the strat do?

stock ibanez pickups are always terribad, you're wasting all those strings by keeping them in!

VonHendrixTV 4 months ago
@VonHendrixTV : It's a guitar tone. No, it's a genre. No, a guitar tone. Genre. Guitar Tone. Might be a genre, as well... Or a guitar tone.

as long as your equipment(pedals, pedalboards etc) is digital it doesnt matter if you play with a Fender kitty edition. It's all about the alterations your signals goes through. On the other hand, if you have say a messa boogie, and all is analog, then you pay attention to stuff like coils, guitar, strings etc etc...

what guage strings on the strat?
realmenwearpants 4 months ago
@realmenwearpants 14-68
A set of D'Addario EXL157's to be exact
kodoku42 4 months ago
@kodoku42 Lol. 68 on a 25.5" scale.
DanteLeblanc 4 months ago
@DanteLeblanc I know Karl Sanders and Dallas Toler-Wade use 70 on the lowest string and they're on drop A
kodoku42 4 months ago
@kodoku42 Yeah. On a 27" sevenstring I'm putting 13-65s with a 70 for seventh for F-Standard all the way up to drop-Ab and drop-A. Unfortunately, DR would only make up to a 70 for their "Tight-Fit" round-wound line, which I much prefer over your typical hexa-wound, I really wanted a 75.
DanteLeblanc 4 months ago
@kodoku42 @DanteLeblanc That's nothing, I personally use a 75 gauge on my 25.5 scale guitar tuned to A-flat.

When I gate it to get nice cuts/stops, I lose power/sustain, not sure how to make it all work
SeanStephensen 4 months ago
lol wow, the strat actually works better
munruthel1 4 months ago
What did you tune the strat to, it sounds disgusting!! Will i be able to creat that kinda tone with the stock pickups on my strat?
bean14hawks 4 months ago
@bean14hawks Not on stock single coils. It's on drop-A tuning and the strings are 14-68
kodoku42 4 months ago
why do you tape the neck of the strat?

Wanna hear the best opinion? the better one depends on what tone you're aiming for.
Certainly RGA8 have a greater depth (on lows, good for breakdowns) and your strato has more mids (good for string skipping and chords).
There's no paradigm in Djent that tells you "Use this tone", it simply depends on what you want as a whole for your song.
So, I would use both of them, each for a different song that best matches the feeling you want to expose.sorry for my english, did you like my opinion?tks
thiago88smart 4 months ago
@thiago88smart Yeah, they both have their distinct properties altough I would still change those RGA8 pickups. But you have a good point. I'm actually suprised about how much discussion this video has started. But in retrospect this comparison was quite blunt and narrow.
kodoku42 4 months ago
@kodoku42 both sound good anyway... I would pick the strato for the tone and the RGA8 for the look
thiago88smart 4 months ago
@thiago88smart points like that always bring long discussions... everyone like to expose their very single opinions when it comes to comparisons (mainly music/equipment)... its like to discuss religion or politics =P its actually up to you to choose. good luck man, you play preetty well stay like that you'll get a lot of enjoyment and mind development. (and pussies). over and out.

Throw some EMG 808's in the ibanez and it will be god tier
