if john williams didnt do the music is would have made the movie a flop, i honestly believe a large cunck of the franchises success came from this like half at least
He also invested all his money he made from episode 4 into Empire because he wanted to do it HIS way and keep all HIS licensing. The man is a genuis.
And for those of you not old enough to have seen this when it first came out, boy was it a treat. I was like 9-10 and it was un-be-lie-va-ble. Nothing like it. It was in theaters for months, long lines with repeat viewers, etc...
Oh and btw, aside from all the long conversations in this film then New Hope is still my most favorite Star Wars movie.
The Stormtroopers are intimidating (the hero factor does hurt them a bit but still, the opening scene is awesome) Darth Vader has his moments and so does Grand Moff Tarkin and also the heroes.
Watching the behind the scenes for Episode IV made me realize the pressure George was under when trying to get his unorthodox vision -at that time- to cinemas.
No matter what some people say about George Lucas, he had an amazing idea and how he managed to create this film (and then the rest) is also remarkable.
Now sure he isn't that strong in writing conversations and his idea is more developed through an experienced director (as with the Empire Strikes back) but still, the core idea and story of Star Wars is great (the fall of the innocent boy Anakin into the half robotic monster of Vader and all).
But above all else is John Williams and his music!

And if anyone other than John Williams hadn't written the music for this (and other movies), they wouldn't have been as good.
