If CMU kids spent half as much time practicing as they did bitching and moaning, their words might actually carry some weight. You think you're giving Nick a bad name, but really you're only damaging your own reputation. Anyone with a brain knows 1 bad show doesn't mean shit. Get over yourselves and get over it... and go practice.
People who live in glass houses can't afford to throw stones. I watched several CMU performances here on YouTube and you all suck pretty bad. How awful would it be if Mr. Payton called you out on your assness the way you're trying to do him?
@eyeswatchingGod that's irrelevant... just because they aren't the killinest cats you've ever heard doesn't mean they don't deserve a decent concert. maybe they deserve to hear it more than your snobby ass.
@dec10 You're funny...and a donkey. This is not about someone deserving a decent concert but how you immaturely handle not getting what you want. It's childish. Regardless of how many posts you make he's still successful, touring the world and you're not. Do you really think these ridiculous posts are going to ruin his career?
@eyeswatchingGod you're assuming a lot. i don't want to ruin his career. i'll go to a nick payton concert at the drop of a hat. hell, payton's place is one of my favorite albums i've heard from the past 20 years. i just think it's disrespectful of him to do that to an audience (which didn't include me). and i find it more than a little weird that you joined youtube shortly after this little incident and do nothing but talk shit to people who are upset with payton's behavior.
What a bad show Nicholas Payton put on at CMU. He was high out of his mind and sounded terrible. He left in the middle of the last tune and rumor has it that he was found a half hour after the concert sitting on the sidewalk by the library. I am a senior in the music program at CMU and I was embarrassed that all the young musicians had this as the closing concert. Does anyone have audio or video from the concert that can go up?
@ksyalxe I'm sure he got stoned and messed up just to piss off the CMU guys. Or alternatively perhaps this cat needs understanding or help, not condemnation. Charlie Parker said: "If you don't feel it, it won't come out of your horn". I guess it won't be coming out of the CMU horns, then.
I heard Nick with the Blue Note 7 this last week, and honestly, I lvoe the way he solos back in '99 for this video, but I don't care for his soloing anymore. Maybe he learned too much theory and now he thinks too much or something. I love this video, though. That whole growling passage is incredible.

I'm pretty sure his chops got damaged and that's why he no longer plays like he used to. I agree, he was incredible back then.
