If I remember right, Dennis wanted to keep moving in the theatrics, Tommy Shaw and JY were rockers and wanted to keep a harder edge. The ROBOTO tour was the nail in the coffin for JY and Tommy Shaw, I remember one of them complaining that the show went for almost 20 minutes before they ever started playing a song. When Dennis got sick they were only too happy to have a reason to move on with out him. Let's be honest, the group was pretty much done by the time they dumped Dennis anyway.
@theoriginalnorseguy This is not from Caught in the Act. Caught In the act was filmed at the Saenger Theater on the theater leg of the Kilroy Tour, and this was clearly filmed before any Kilroy Music Videos were shot. Mr. Roboto was definitely shot long before the mini-tour.
@Toxodeth1984 Is Styx really progressive rock? I would consider them more of a classic rock or arena act. I don't mean that as an insult. When I think of progressive rock I think of groups like Emerson, Lake & Palmer, YES and early Genesis. Styx were ambitious and did record concept albums, which are usually associated with progressive acts. Styx were very good musicians but had a more commercial sound and feel than a progressive band.
@Jefgg yes you are kind of right,as I wrote "kind of progressive",if You check the first 3 Styx albums many tracks sounds and are kind of progressive, what you wrote it is more of the concept that the media gave you and everyone, check King Crimson,Fruupp,Present(Belgium 1980 album),Camel,Le Orme Premiata (de Italia) and many many others that THEY ARE PROGRESSIVE ROCK TOO. not only the mass media bands which also I like 'em a lot mainly ELP!
@Jefgg Yes, they had evolved after Equinox, and thereafter developed into something very unique and special. That was indeed the classic five lineup! Was at that concert in '81! Awesome!

he looked better when he lost the stache and the afrro thing and what i wouldnt give to have a green jumpsuit like tommy shaws it'd be perfect for 80's night at a dance club!
this was the actual music video for "A.D. 1928 - Rockin' The Paradise" shown on eMpTyV. that utilized the stage setup for the 'Rockin' The Paradise' tour not the 'Caught in the Act' tour/concert video. In the 'Caught in the Act' tour/concert video DeYoung had shaved off his mustache and started frosting his hair because of his grey and to get into the Kilroy character. They also didn't play the "AD 1928" intro but went straight into "Rockin' The Paradise".
In an era of Styx and Kansas, mid 1970s, We stayed with friends of the family that had an actual player-piano, uses tube scrolls of those musical indentations to play music like a phantom was at the keys, they are pretty interesting instruments
Not really. If you have ever been in a band, (as I have) with an egomania person, (as I have) and written and performed songs with that person, it's a shame when HE (!) sues the rest of the band (4). Dennis De Young is extremely talented...but he put that group through hell. One of the original founding members basically killed himself from drinking. John Panozzo RIP. When all this crap happened because of DeYoung...John lost it. Screw DeYoung. Their new keyboardist is great.
@jammie4u He's not a bad keyboardist, but his vocals are like nails on a chalkboard. Styx without Dennis is just a mediocre tribute band playing his songs.
@jammie4u Alcoholism is a progressive disease. Using your logic, De Young would have drunk himself to death when the band kicked him out. That said, Styx started to die for me after Pieces of Eight. Dennis started making sappy ballads and the material was generally weaker. At this point, I suspect that they're an oldies act, or even a tribute band that happens to contain some original members (much like Journey or Yes).
If they would only let Dennis back in.....They are not nearly as good without him...its like Genesis w/out Phil, even Tommy shaw can sing...Dennis had a way better stage presence as front man....anybody else agree??
IO saw an interview and he said he never wanted out....ts tommy....and its sad that James De young is Dennis' brother!!

@johncorsino He couldn't handle the road, it was health issues I recall, not just some in-fighting over musical direction, however, their back catalog suggests they all shared some interest in the collective direction, it's hard to say how to get along with 5 unique people working together and only so much material one can put under the band label, so solo albums typically come about, or collaborations with other artists. It's all about expression and art
These guys were awesome! The only better vocalist I could see doing these songs would be Freddie Mercury. I think Dennis De Young is 2nd only to Freddie.

I will have to say, until DeYoung got rid of the long hair and 'stache, his voice didn't really fit well with his look.

Apparently the result of a lawsuit, DeYoung can bill himself as "performing the music of Styx" or "formerly of Styx", but not as "the voice of Styx"
But he IS "the voice of Styx"!!!
That's a load of crap if you ask me.

@jammie4u ok I understand that, but how can anyone deny that he WAS "the voice of Styx"???
I agree with everything you said BTW.

@jammie4u The idea that Dennis deserves any blame for John Panozzo's lack of self control is preposterous.
