The silence after the concert was like "What was that?" It took a while until the audience started to applause. I think the audience was chocked, because it was so good. I was chocked too. It was an awesome performance with 100% feeling. And it doesn't matter that his voice vibarated a bit. He gave it all of his own soul. The lust for life! And that is what this aria is all about.
La técnica de Gedda, traducida en dulzura y calidad de sonido es un hito en la historia de los tenores, qué bello momento el que nos ofrece este video, gracias Onegin65 por tan hermoso documento artístico...
I had the great honour of being taken as one of Gedda and his wife's students in 1977, but due to the political situation in my country at that time I was turned down by the Swedish Institute for one of their bursaries. He was such a gracious man, always answered my letters in an old-fashioned flowing script and was most sympathetic when the bursary was declined. He remains one of my heroes of the 20th century and one of the finest tenors ever. Bravo Gedda!
@sugarbist Not laboring...he was older. There is another link of him doing it when he was much younger...check that one out. For his age at the time he did this particular concert, it wasn't bad.
I reckon on balance this guy has every quality that great singers possess, where others only possess some. It's incredible what range of repertoire he was capable of singing without affecting his voice adversely. Probably his unique physicality combined with incredible technique and understanding of the voice.
Gedda is a gentleman..I think all singers are kind..it is all this publicity and arr. around them who make them better or worse. But deep in there heart they are kínd and full of love. Don´t you think so?
Gedda is a very good singer...and a gentleman. I have been talking to him several of time in Stockholm. Ones he was in my office and I played som cd of him.."Oh, that old one" he said. Smiling
ya hay que drale un monumento esepero que gedda pueda leer las cosas maravillosas que se dice de su voz.. amne gedda larga vida para que enseñes una buena tecnica de cnato
@xcubus66 You are correct- the very greatest tenor ever.....!! - yes- ever impressive and ever true to the composer; a true genius; The Maestro- What emotion in this Cavaradossi piece without getting ' sloppy' - how many times do u think he has sung this , yet it sounds fresh, like a man in love about to lose his life!! - God Bless Gedda for his hard work to develop his talent, his gift itself and all the joy he has brought us!
Thank you for this treat! A masterclass in technique, style, and how to properly emote in a concert setting. Bravo Nicolai! (At almost age 60, amazing).
corellilover- Who then is the missing link of the three. It's obvious that we have Gedda,Corelli, and can I be so presumptuous as to assume the third tenor to be Enrico Caruso? Please correct me if any of this is incorrect.
This great clip is from a George London gala taped in Vienna on 21 June 1984 in the presence of Mrs. London. In this selection, Gedda is accompanied by the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Vienna, led by Hans Graf. Almost all the singers' selections on the concert seem to be from operas Mr. London was knwn for singing. I have the whole concert on tape, and it is now available on DVD from VAI. According to his autobio, Gedda sang Cavaradossi on stage more than I thought. Thanks for posting this!

No se le ve comodo en la tesitura de su propia voz.Lo resuelve con recursos estiliticos como un exceso de vibrato.

Even at his age in this performance, Gedda is basically a master class in tone/artistry/beauty. Others should study him closely.
