I have a strange break-in/ lubrication method- I break it in dry for like an hour, then put petroleum jelly in it (I know, I know...), and after a week of use, wash all the pieces and spray them with CRC or Jig a Loo. The petro wore the plastic down, then the silicone lubes it.
CRC is in the auto part of walmart, it was $2.17 but i highly recommend it. Your cube is terrible at first but just work through it. Its a little ironic, on thr back of the can it says "dont use on plastic" but its actually pretty amazing. WARNING: make sure its CRC and not like liquid wrench or something. They are NOT the same
I've used all lubes except Jigaloo and i must say you guys dont give vaseline enough credit. If you have it in a cube for a while and use it a lot it will create a nice even coating and the corrosive properties will reduce lockups. If you can, silicone,
but vaseline will only make your cube better (storeboughts for sure)
I went to get some of the CRC, but the CRC"Heavy Duty SIlicone" that is in this video and I saw at the store contains acetone, which according to the wikipedia page for speedcubing, is a solvent of ABS plastic and should not be used for lubrication.
Instead I got a DuPont Teflon Silicone lubricant, which I tested on my store-bought cube. It turns better, but there is a large amount is static friction. is this normal, or is it safe to get the acetone-containing CRC?
Any silicone spray will do fine, as long as it doesn't have petroleum distillates in it. Unfortunately, most of them do. But I found some that doesn't at Ace Hardware for like $5 and it's working really really well. I highly recommend it.
here in Argentina i cant get any CRC, but there are some silicone spray that are used in car's interiors, like System Wash, could i use some of that? They are kinda cheap... Btw, I have only 2 cubes, a crappy one and my diy
I just got CRC. What is the best way to lube my 3x3? To disassemble it and give it one sweep, in each side of the cubies? Or just take away three peices and spray and work it in? Help plz... I have been hearing lots of ways.
You're wrong about Vaseline, it does help, its just not used because it apparently disintegrates your cube. It can work better in hotter temperatures though. QUESTIONS: How long should Silicone last for? Should it have a certain ingredient/property? Anything to avoid?
i recently found CRC heavy Duty but it was Marine. And the bottle was blue. Is there any difference between them or do they both work the same way and will improve my cube the same way??
hello is it necessary to lube the diy cubes or the dian sheng cubes, coz here in india nether jig-a-loo is available nor is the silicon spray of any type available, can u suggest me any alternative like greese we use in engines
I had a 4x4x4 Rubik's... locked up so tight and was so bad Rubik's sent me a replacement immediately. I could barely turn the faces and it felt like someone put gorilla glue in the thing. I took your advice and went to wal-mart and got a bottle of CRC Silicone. Sprayed it in and darn near gave myself blisters trying to work it into an already locked up cube. Then, after about 20 minutes of non-stop twisting... it loosened up almost in the blink of an eye and is now my best 4x4x4. Thank you.
@gelluper NO... WD40 has many petroleum distillates in aside from Silicone. Over time it will dissolve Nylon cores and faces. Most other plastics as well. CRC is like 2 bucks a can if you live in the USA... And it is the BOMB.... Order lube from rubik's if you have no access to CRC Brand "Heavy Duty Silicone Multi-Use Lubricant"
what is best for my teraminx i have crc but i dont want to take my puzzle apart and i know its not a good idea to spray it into a puzzle that big and with that fragile of parts, would jigaloo be ok or would it damage my puzzle? im afraid if i take the teraminx apart i wont get it back together.

Ahh, I see... So the way my cube was hard to turn was normal after using silicone. Haha, I freaked out when that happened and washed my cube. Thanks for the info guys, great vid!
Guyz i found out a more efficent way to get the stickyness out from your cube when u spray your silicone, do it on a napkin then rub it on the cube it easier :)

My hardware store didn't have CRC silicone, but they did have Elmer's Slide-All. Slide-All is a dry teflon lubricant. I used it on my store-bought and it seems great. What do you think about teflon?
petroleum@SpeedStackinGuy96 any should be fine but if you don't want your stickers not to be damaged us silicone sprays without petroleum distillate cause it damaged mine!
check out our video 2 cube lubes 2 lubrication techniques and use the method I use on the Blue type F.
Jig a loo is okay, if you don't over spray it and don't let it pool on your cubies.... but you are right it will dissolve plastic if you let it set or use too much
Depends on the cube, but honestly I can tell you it doesn't matter what you lube your cube with you aren't going to change it's cornering degree by more than one degree.
@HowtoCube another technique i use is vegtable oil in my experience ppl say bad stuff about the oil based products but it works well and doesnt where on the stickers and in my case rele has no bad effects
We sell jigaloo in our store and I was messing with my cube, stressing how badly it turned. Then I figured, why not spray some of this in there? It works amazingly.
I just finished using Jig-a-loo on my mirror blocks cube.
my #1 recommendation (perhaps even more anal than you guys) is to completely disassemble the cube prior to applying the Jig-a-loo. I wiped off any which had pooled. Upon assembly, there was no cementing of the pieces... just smooth turning.
i bought my jig-a-loo when it fist came out and its really old when i spray it in my cube i noticed that its not as good as it was is it possible for lubricant to expire?
the temporary lockups are a result of the propellant and usually go away once it evaporates. Since it has long evaporated by the time you re assemble your cube you don't experience it with the disassemble method
lol i applied jig a loo yesterday in my cube and i think i sprayed too much. i sprayed like 2 sprays on ever edge of the cube and when i checked my cube the next day by opening it up the plastic peices in the insde are cracked but they still work
nice video! but i have a question, i just bought a cube and lubed it with oil, it turns great but locks up sometimes. so i was thinking of cleaning out my rubiks cube and buying one of the lubricants used in your video . what should i get jigaloo or crc? please reply :)
Depends on the cube, I assume you mean a store bought so either one will work good. Jig A Loo will cause cracks to develop but to this date I've never had a store bought break because of this. Nevertheless you have to be careful with CRC and Jig A Loo. Remeber to use OUTSIDE (and a respirator isn't a bad idea) and be careful not to get the lubricants on your stickers unless you have replacements available.
i would never use silicon lube like that. The best way to do it is to do a complete dsasemble, arrange the pieces and spray them all, wait for it to dry. Then reassemble and it will be soooo smooth. Never spray silicon into the core cos it can glue it together and makes it sticky.
I have used this method as well, but it takes forever and I've not knowingly expreienced any long term ill effects of this. However I do think your point may have merit and it sounds like we need to do a experiment with two identical cubes lubed with each method and the tested for performance over time.... So many videos to make.... So litlle time
hey guys i thought I would just share some info about teh puzzle pros lube. The lube wears off so fast because it creates a coat of grease over the cubies therefore making it vital to break the cube in right away after useage. Thanksfor the cool vids!
I think that, the amount of time it takes for a Lubricant to wear off depends on the cuber. I am a "rigouris" Cuber and I do around 30-40 solves a day. And I see myself lubing my Main DIY Around once a week. Mainly because I use the cube so much that the lube wears off. So it really depends.
thanks. I couldn't find anything in my local wal-mart, but found some Jig A Loo for $3.17 at my Home Depot today.
It's already doing wonders to my 2 year old Wal Mart cube, now I can actually twist it using my finger rather giving my hand a workout. I can't believe I have been solving this thing forever w/o any lube!
I've found that vaseline is good for braking low quality cubes, like store bought ones. Then I've cleaned out the cubes after a few months & lubricated with CRC. They turn out pretty good.
is jig-a-loo good on a ghosthand cube?

nice video! but i have a question, i just bought a cube and lubed it with oil, it turns great but locks up sometimes. so i was thinking of cleaning out my rubiks cube and buying one of the lubricants used in your video . what should i get jigaloo or crc? please reply :)
ez2475 2 years ago
Depends on the cube, I assume you mean a store bought so either one will work good. Jig A Loo will cause cracks to develop but to this date I've never had a store bought break because of this. Nevertheless you have to be careful with CRC and Jig A Loo. Remeber to use OUTSIDE (and a respirator isn't a bad idea) and be careful not to get the lubricants on your stickers unless you have replacements available.

people say you can buy crc at walmart, can you tell me where in the store i would find it?
RickNash61CBJ 2 years ago
automotive, on the motor oil aisle probably
HowtoCube 2 years ago
the crc locks it up for like a day because it has petroleum distillants in it. It melts the plastic initialy and also can remove your stickers>

Actually the effects you desribe are probablly caused by the propellant and expire after it evaporates.
Petroleum distillants are often maligned, learn more by googling petroleum distillants facts and myths

so I must set the silicone spray in the cube and then I rotate and I are the same ... and he is good. or is that not so? please give me answer!

i would never use silicon lube like that.

So it really depends.

i'm ganna buy some crc and or jig-a-loo i hope it's not expensive

Jig A Loo cost me $4.15 a can at Home Depot
CRC costs about $1.25 at Wal Mart
HowtoCube 2 years ago

But I would never put it in a DIY!

Totally agreed.

I will make an annotation. And thanks for the void cube disassemble video it rocks!

i think the only thing vaselline is good for is storeboughts. storeboughts suck so much that sillicone wont even help it
