no offense, but if u really want to record your engine sound you have to get to the back and record it... engine view really doesn't do the sound justice...
@Phonologie This is true, but to my knowledge the US automakers didn't utilize the I6's potential in many vehicles. The 3800 is a pretty solid engine though.
Man, the 3800, what a freakin' engine... It made Wards list of the 10 Best Engines of the 20th Century and I totally agree. I wish America would make 'em all like this.
If you want a fantastic, cheap used car with a great engine that will run forever, find an old, well maintained Park Ave in the 100K/mi range with the 3800 engine. The KBB values for these totally don't reflect the service lives you can reliably expect to get out of them with good maintenance.
Bro you are so right. In my life I've been lucky enough to own 4 different Buicks with the 3.8 V6. Maintain these by the book and they are great cars that last. Right now I have a '87 LeSabre with 132K miles on it. The 3.8 still with plenty of power. I have a 5.0 MustangLX also but, it's not as smooth as this Buick. GM built these right!
I'm going to take a look at a '91 Bonneville with the 3800 in it that currently has 220,000 miles on it. *shrug* It's worth a shot, I mean, it's VERY clean for its age and mileage.
Take your time looking it over. Make sure its been properly maintained. These GM cars are such good cars but sometimes end up as junkers because too many people think a car is just put gas in it and go. Listen for a noisy valve train also. If you here "valve chatter" don't buy it! Drive it through like a tunnel or an underpass so you can here what the engine sounds like during acceleration. Take a turn and hit the gas to see if the tranny slips when the car is leaning to one side.
Well, so far, it drives like a champ. The car is smooth and fairly quiet. The engine doesn't make any odd noises and doesn't seem to suffer from tranny slippage yet. The catalytic converter heat shield seems to rattle a little, but I'm going to have the whole thing removed anyway. The tires are good, although the front right one MAY be a little un-straight since there is a lot of pulsating tire noise.
Might be a herniated tire. Some people call it a tire bubble. Also, check the steering components for wear. Raise the car so that the front tires clear the ground, then shake both wheels. If there is excessive play, you need to change some parts. Parts are cheap for these cars, so why not? It's worth it!
Had a 3800 in a '90 W-body Regal and boy did that car pull from the low end like no tomorrow. Sadly we had to run it over with a truck but it started right after we did that.
The Buick built 3800 was a darned good engine! it was a sleeper in it's earlier SFI days, likely as most of them went into full size FWD luxury Buicks and Oldsmobiles. That one was 155 horses, but horsepower is a math equation, and lower reving - strong low-end torque engines like that one have a LOT more real-world grunt than what you'd think.
You should watch this vid of a Park Avenue 3.8 V6 accelerating. Doesn't sound like a moped to me!
watch?v=bxv-jAiHbYY
In this vid, the engine is revved while the gearbox is in neutral. The engine doesn't have to pull or deliver power. That's why it sounds like this in this vid. Besides, the man in this vid barely touches the throttle. Could rev much further and longer.
All car engines sound different when you rev them in neutral instead of actually accelerating the car.
Cool. I used to have a 1991 Buick Park Avenue. Can you post some 0-max speed video, like you did with the Impala? I'd love to hear the 3.8 pull and see it's top speed.
check my buick. ive got the same engine in it.

I LOVE Buicks!! I drive an '89 Reatta with an LN3 3800 (165 hp, 210 tq). When it's running good, it drives fairly smooth. I Love the 3800's!

Sounds like a Piaggio PX125. A scooter, basically.
Americans ought to leave V6s to Italy, who not only know how to make a decent engine, but also make them sound like sex and not like a kettle.

dejate de ignorancias, no suena como ese scooter, suena bastante bien. Además engo entendido que este auto tiene turbocargador.
