I remember when I first heard this song, I had to be all of 15-16 years of age, and yes I had my ear to the street and my ear to music at the same time. This was a song that made you stop what you were doing and listen up to what the Man was saying, as a matter, the song was able to say what you wanted it to say, not a word was spoken between you and the song, just you and some music, you listen to it and tell me what the song is saying to you, even today, the song speaks.
"Was Dog a Doughnut" was blasted at every block party in Harlem in 1977. Naturally, the crowd always went nuts. The song is infectious and soulful and still one of my favorites.
I heard this on KNX fm back in 1977. I recorded it on 8 track. I played it to my dance class co-students and wanted to choreograph something to it but things intervened. Nice to hear it again, and i am SURPRISED this was done by Cat Stevens!!!!
well i wouldn't say most brothers on the south and west sides of chicago wouldn't not know this song, asked the older brother's it's a old stepper song.
man I had know idea this was mad by a white guy. why does that matter you might say?well growing up in the most racially segregated city in world (Chicago) .One rarely sees the accomplishments of other race's .I willing to bet a box of mike and ike's candy that you 75% of blacks on the south and west of Chi and they would not know this song was blue eyed soul but its A JAM of All TIMES
@thewrightlilbro I saw an interview with Moodymann and he said when he was growing up in Detroit in the late 60's he thought even The Doors were black!
I got it in the disco years,, just didnt' know I was in the disco years.. I thought I was a bird,,, a plane,,, all kinds of stuff... this music was helpa stuff they would now call it...
this is so awesome, I went to see Cat live two nights ago and his band played this when he went off stage quickly. I had no idea it was actually his track! Good shit..
@buttrluv69 Hell Yeah! I remember those beautiful days of yesteryear..It 's beautiful how everyone want ot be a part of the steppin'-scene now; considering back in the days; some people frowned upon our lifestyle. They sort of labeled the dance to be those that were thugs. It's about time real "Izsm" is getting some glory.
dude I remember >>>> chicago native skater stepper house head, old school jacking music freak . Jb's monorail and the big wheel and tryin to get on the rink while this plays you feel me .
that song was big on the west side of chicago in steppers clubs but also in the skateing rinks out west like albany skateing rink on madison and hot wheels on chicago ave. n pulaski
The Roots (now well known as Jimmy Fallon's house band ) had this to say when
Cat appeared on the show last May: Cat Stevens came—it was surreal. We talked about an obscure album cut from 1977 called Was Dog A Doughnut? What was just him messing around for four minutes in the studio wound up being a staple in the hip-hop world, which he was very shocked to discover.
Those in NYC remember this as one of the first samples that DJ's mixed together.Back in the mid-70's when this came out.....It had that hardcore break beat, nice drums, decent guitar, and of course the electric piano.......But most of all
If you didn't hear about this cut until the 80s you were a little late. This cut dropped in 1977. In Chicago it was mostly listened to and played in the Stepper clubs like The Dungeon, The Hummingbird, Foxy Wheels, Skate City, Markham Skating Rink in Markham. The Ol School Steppers no about The Dungeon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And here I was for the last 25 years thinking that this was some kind of a follow-up to "Salsa Smurph" by Special Request. Gotta file this one under "break-beats from unlikely places". I wonder if this joint is what got people to start barking on their records in the early 80's (Planet Patrol, etc.).
oh my goodness!! i was hearing this song on black radio in the early 80's and never realized it was mr. "majikat" who was responsible for this!!! wow, next time i'm in a used record store, i'm going to look for this lp!!!
Yusuf talks peace,,,, but his actions speak louder than words. Yusuf (cat) has performed for Al Qaida fundraisers, donated his own money to Hamas so-called "charities", and ON FILM supported murdering Salmon Rushdie.
Cat Stevens was a fox in his day. His talent has touched many.
