  • Songs about how real life snuck in to their relationship "like a pigeon from hell" and wrecked it - tore down the fantasy ... just like what happens in most relationships.....

  • What a song !

  • brings back memories of old MTV.

  • old MTV, those were the days!

  • she looks so hot and looks like a bad ass in this video.

  • She IS a Hot Bad Ass!

  • Yeah Selena did sing this song, but what people do not talk about is how her father said that they wrote the song. Well they were sued for major bucks. Chrissy has a voice that no female artist can compare to. Oh and if you think Selena did better, the way she sang it is exactly word for word. And if you want to be shut up even more, you will notice that this song is no longer on any of Selena's cd's. LOL...

  • "Chrissy has a voice that no female artist can compare to." Maybe not the right word there, 'distinctive' is a better word... Chrissy, and maybe Annie Lenox... I'd be hard pressed to choose between them for a favorite.... either way, they are both on my short list for fav female vocalists.

  • **AmeriKKKa = The Chain Gang**

  • What a moving song. Haunting. The kind of music that sticks to the ribs.

  • selena sucked, this original is much better

  • they both sang it good. selena was spanish, i bet your white and you dont even know spanish. They sang it perfect.

  • im talking to leeers.

  • oh it's so poignant it makes me want to weep! brings back memories--Bronco Bowl, Dallas, 1983 (or was it '84?) To all of y'all who think this was a Selena original, I'm pretty sure that AB liked this song so much, he made it into a "cumbia" and really the only thing that matches the song is the jist of "fotos y recuerdos" or rather "found a picture of you", so yeah, Fallen4rmheaven, I can see how this is a little over your head and you don't get the meaning. Just ENJOY!

  • first heard it as a 15year old school boy and still makes the hair on my neck stand up,,,,such memorys

  • Boy, they really made quality back then, didn't they?

  • selena song this in spanish.

and in my opinion selena did a better job, also the meaning of the song in spanish is weeter and prettier

  • thats funny because most people don't understand what the meaning of the pretenders version is.

Most people think its about James Honeyman-Scott and its not.

Selena's version is nice; but, I prefer this; the Selena version is very pop.

  • and whats the meaning of this song?..i really dont get it AT ALL..

    lol

  • Classic!

  • Wow! Sometimes you have to not hear a song for awhile then hear it years later and it really makes you say WOW!

  • Chrissie is the best female rock voice ever. Still is. I grew up with the Pretenders. This song still holds up.

  • great song. It was written about james honeyman scott original Pretenders guitarist who died the previous year. RIP 'Jimmy'

  • My mate and I had breakfast with Jimmy in a greasy cafe in Glasgow back in 1980 after a gig. He was such a down-to-earth bloke with no airs and graces at all. He even thought that he wasn't a good guitar player! He kept telling us how 'good' the women in Texas were and that he was heading back there after the tour.

    Such a nice guy. RIP.

  • no it wasn't written about Jimmy.

Twas Written about Ray or so Chrissie says

  • awesome

  • she was preggers with ray davies baby here

  • Did her baby inherit their musical talent ?

  • country music

  • cool, just like my photo website.........

  • selena sings a song similar to this, but in spanish.

  • those were the happiest days of my life

  • Beautiful woman with a beautiful voice singing lyrics that are nothing less than poetic.

  • One of the best rock groups ever and Chrissie is definitely one of the best ladies in rock n roll.

btw, gang does anybody else remember if she shot this video while she was in the first few months of expecting her child?

iirc, I think there's a story like that behind this video. Anyone else remember?

  • You have an excellent memory! she was just shy of her second trimester as I recall. you can actually see some slight weight gain (very slight)

  • !st time ever i hear this song. I Like it !

    Greets from holland

  • a classic!

  • Just read her bio on Wikipedia. She is Cool 'n' the (chain) Gang...

  • to all the people comparing selenas remake of this song:come on.these are the pretenders;no knock on selena, but theres no comparison.this song still kicks ass after 25 years.i will always remember it.

  • FlavorRed,

My experience closely resembles yours. I remember my parents blasting this song, the B-52's, toto, and more. 1978 HERE

  • "Got into the house like a pigeon from hell...".

Love The Pretenders, love Chrissy. Amazing talent. Peace.

  • i am going to her new restaurant in akron, ohio. and hopefully i can hug her, and hug her and take a picture with her and eat with her and hug her again..

  • "Those were the happiest days of my life"

  • shit..and mine too. if i could only turn back time..

  • It pisses me off that Selena covered this song, but she at least had good taste in music. Still sort of sad that dumb bitch of a fan club manager killed her. Anyway, this song is timeless.

  • This song is just badass!

  • Such a strong song. Really powerful stuff. The melody gets stuck in your head for days.

  • Dang I was a freshmen in highschool when this was first played on MTV. Remember MTV when they played videos.

  • This is such a beautiful song, while so sad at the same time. "I found a picture of you...."

does anyone else appreciate the sam cooke reference?

  • ufff... !! way to good!!

  • They'll fall to ruin one day... for making us part!

    Chrissie FTW!

  • I wish Chrissie would hurry up and realise that she is in love with me!

  • This song was originally going to be a tribute to Ray Davies but was changed to a dedication to James Honeyman-Scott. Both were intrinsically involved with the pretenders. This being so, I don't know why the pretenders would be paying anyone who made a cover of a pretender's song. Seemingly it would be vice versa.

  • it still is about Ray; Chrissie has never said this song was about James; people assumed that and took it to heart. The song was written long before Jimmy died.

The original band used to play this on sound checks.

  • Wow, I thought it was made by Selena and A.B. Quintanilla!! it's an awesome song spanish and english version

  • BACK ON THE CHAIN GANG, PHOTOS Y RECUERDOS Great songs times two!!!!!! Great video Pretenders, thanks for sharing this clip Luiscmcki!!

  • i used to play bass for the pretenders

  • Didn't we all?

  • Selena Quintanilla-Perez, Queen of Tejano Music. April 16,1971-March 31,1995. Aged only 23! Selena was shot and killed at the Days Inn Motel in her hometown of Corpus Chrisit, Texas by the president of her fan club Yolanda Saldivar. Selena fired her for stealing money. Selena was shot on her back. Selena Y Los Dinos had their own version of this song called "FOTOS Y RECUERDOS". Pretenders are still paying the Quintanilla family. When Selena made her own version in spanish they got much more cash

  • why are the pretenders paying them money?

  • Horrible y repugnante versión, por cierto...

  • What a doll, she can rock me anytime!!!!

  • found a picture of you, us. favorite vid de la chrissy. she still stands tall among the giants. storyteller, rocker, artist, hot fucking woman. woman. not many can rock like she can.

  • Chrissie Hynde looks like the type of girl you would catch something from, but wouldn't mind.

    Rush Limbaugh

  • You bet!

Besides that, my favourite singer, favourite song... ever

  • How fast the time runs...it seems just few years ago. A very goog song. Bye from Colombia

  • I thought it was about Sid,Chrissie and Sid were gunna get married once,so she could stay in the UK.Oh well just a thought...

  • she kicks ass!!

  • BOTCG was mainly about the death of James Honeyman-Scott -- Pete Farndon did not die until the summer after the song was released (1982).

Chrissie Hynde also did not break up with Ray Davies until the next year (1983).

I always thought it was at least somewhat about John Lennon, too -- not that CH knew him personally, but to what he meant to everyone of her approximate age.

  • you are correct sir!! r.i.p to a damn good bass player.

  • first pretenders song i realized chrissy hynde was one of "the great ones". she nailed it.

  • I wish it, too...

  • that guitar solo is so catchy!

  • it sure is!!

  • it sounds like a happy tune but it's actually a very sad song about the OD deaths of 2 of the band members.

  • was just thinking the sama.

    nice com.

  • I thought it might be about the breakup with the Kinks singer..

  • be nice if it was.

its about their guitarist dead as dillinger on heroin.

  • No its not.

Chrissie has said what its about

  • She was quite pregnant in this video

  • I love this...'I found a picture of you'' happy-est day's of my life. Does it get any better?

  • How can it?

  • i love this song, one of my favorite songs and vidoes takes me back to my childhood in the earlly 80s, and thi s song and video would come on, it reminds me, of sam cookes , chain gang, its a great tune from a great band

  • I know someone who looks identical to Chrissy Hynde. To be honest it's kind of strange and so exciting as I am a Chrissy Hynde fan. Her name is Carmel and she is her double.

  • I love this band, My mom was really young when she had me So I was jamming to this when I was 4 and older. Thanks her now I love there music and I'm from ohio, so are they. kinda cool.

  • Kinda reminds me of my parents. Sort of. They were in their 20's at least. They'd either blast music from the stereo all the time or they'd have it on MTV. They would throw a bunch of parties up until I was 10. I remember this song from when I was 4 as well. (Among others.) I assume we are the same age. 1979?

  • yes same age

  • brings me back 2 childhood every time

  • I absolutely love this song.

  • Good Stuff!

  • With Big Country and Rockpile personnel on this song, it is more like a rock supergroup doing a Pretenders song.

  • Who is from Big Country in the band? And yes; only Hynde and the drummer left from the original set. Nonetheless; they never sounded better than here.

  • I've always loved this song since i was 6.

  • Who is the Portuguese guy seen flying between 0:06 and 0:10? I like this song!

  • his name is armando.

  • what's his full name? Is he in the band?

  • The Rockpile fellow is the guitar player Billy Bremner (and what a musician!).

The subject of the song is the late Pretenders guitarist James Honeyman Scott, dead at age 25 from a heart attaque, caused by a period of cocaine abuse.

  • 21/f/single hiiiii boys O

  • i'm gonna go and buy the news of the world today, and i shot the pigeon from hell on my neighbours roof - no more cooo cooo on a sunday a.m !

  • Oh, I love this song, It's like travelling in time to an age where everyone was happy, XD.

  • great song- brings back great memories of late 70's and 80's- thanks for posting.

  • I really like this song.

  • man this takes me back - the tastes/ smells/ feelings from then. my head is still spinning!

    thnax for postin ;)

  • Yep ,music and acid can cause you to trip with no luggage

  • bllodngutts - lolz ;)

  • I'm black too and I loved this song ever since I heard in a Sturbacks.

  • A huevo que si!!!! :D

  • Rip off

  • Um this is more like um.... patty smith. Yea but um... Selena errrr. okay,

  • patty smith?

    isn't this chrissie hynde?

  • chrissie hynde... NOT patti smith!!! lol!!

  • that's a terrible story.....but only Chrissie can sing this song(an original Pretenders song)as well this. As a male member of the human race... Chrissie was hot! I saw her live a few years back and she sang and LOOKED beautifully! She gets better with time.

  • Selena Quintanilla-Perez, Queen of Tejano Music Forever! April 16,1971-March 31,1995. Selena was brutally gunned down at the Days Inn Motel in Corpus Christi, Texas by the President of her fan Club Yolanda Saldivar after firing her from the fan club for stealing money. Dont get me wrong, this version of the song is awesome, but Selena's version is 100% better. Fotos Y Recuerdos! Selena danced it and gave it a Tex-Mex feeling!

  • Chrissy Hind met Selena had a few laughs with her, and said she loved her version as well.

  • absolute classic song!

  • Selena cant compare to Chrissy Hind!!! There is a reason she had to take someone else's music and try to make it her own.

  • C'monn Selena was good ,not may be good there you go your on the right track if you never heard of her why? question it ok, So the pretenders released it, But it Was a Greater Hit with Selenas version in Spanish cumbia fotos y Recuerdos "you dont have to be a hater R.I.P Selena" All that do know you we love you alway's.

  • Looks like me going to work. Minus St. Paul's and the Thames as a backdrop.

  • great tune

  • love this song that hit number 5 in 1982. Selenas version Fotos Y Recuerdos was great too spending 7 weeks at 1 on the billboard latin charts in 1994.

  • Crissy Hind and the pretenders made this a top ten hit in 1982 and it was a hit world wide! Super song by a super band, always no1 in my book! Cool videos to go with thier songs!!!

  • this song gets stuck in my head alot

  • You must be crazy ISLAMICMEXICANO...This song hit #5 on American Billboard Charts in 1982...WAAAY before anyone knew who Selena was.

Didn't even know she did a cover...

  • The Pretenders owe the late Queen of Tejano Music, Selena Quintanilla-Perez, soo much thanks! This song was not famous until Selena's group made it into a spanish cumbia! Search for "Fotos y recuerdos"! Selena made this song a hudge hit! We miss & love you Selena! You are STILL #1 & always will be! SELENA FOREVER!

  • C'mon! Selena may be good but I've never heard of her. This song has been very well known to the world since it first was released - by the Pretenders!

  • amazing song and group!

  • I love this song and the pretenders, Krissi is on the bridge crossing the Ohio river in Cincinati, they really made some super songs back in the 80s and 90s. Damn I miss them!!

  • This is great!! Thanks for sharing this, Salomen63!!!!

  • im pretty sure they dis-banded yrs ago.

  • Only the group itself, there were so many changes in the line-up, however the name of the group is being kept alive by Chrissie alone. The next album under the name is going to be released on October.

  • thank you for the update.

  • to zone zamfirče....

  • Great Song !!!

  • They don't make them like they use to.

    Chrissy Hynde. ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

Back on the chain gang :)

  • she's quite sexy in this video

  • Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  • Happy Birthday, Chrissie!

  • doesstill exists this group'?

  • guhh... oh gawd... o jesu... o man

  • It feels good in me.

  • Good song ..

  • GREAT,GREAT,Song/Video! The message here is:FUCK the Money Laundering Crooked governments!

  • are you sure?... I think it has nothing to do about the gov, it's all about the x. you know, the x's & o's. you are wrong.

  • 82..What is a "Chain Gang"?..Lyrics:"The powers that be,force us to live like we do".

The main Players in the Video are seen going to their jobs, then breaking rocks on the "Chain Gang"...couldn't be ANY simpler than that!

  • lovely song!

  • ...a love song

  • This song is a tribute to former band mate James Honeyman-Scott who tragically died from a heroin overdose.

  • very nice song!!!!!!

    I LOVE !

  • Awesome song reminds me when i just move to San Antonio in 1982. I used to hear it alot in a small bar I used to hang out. Then Selena came up with the spanish version and I was her #1 fan just awesome song.

  • OMG that´s a song !

  • The wonderful Chrissy Hynde, songwriter, musician and vocalist. She does it all.

  • Excelente Rola....me trae muchos recuerdos !!!!!!

  • Excelente Rola.....me trae muchos recuerdos!!!!

  • 1st pretenders song I ever heard. Great song, as are MANY of them.

  • It's a shame you can't see these songs being done with energy and excitment again. I love Chrissy Hynde from the early don't kill the meat eater days. She could rock. But now she has aged to a point where she could start doing like Rod Stewart and do clasic standards :( Oh well I will see them when they tour again :)

  • This music brings me good memories... love it!!!!!

  • Most medlodic guitar intro/solo ever! The great Billy Bremner! Rock does not get more evocative than this.

  • i like it,but do not understand,is it wessie rhyming slang.

  • do you mean 'chain gang'?

No, chain gang is a group of prisoners chained together by the legs and working outside, doing 'hard labor'. To my knowledge, it's primarily American, save for some possible stints in Ancient Egypt on occasion.

  • no,i mean the comment made by brucekap, about billy bremner rock,is it wessie slang?

  • ive been looking for this song for ages ever since i heard it in how i met your mother!

  • whoa whoa :D i first heard this in my friends mum's car! it rox! it's so addicting to listen to
