  • Too bad lead trumpet players think screaming is music.

  • @myambro no, too bad the rest of the world doesn't realize it is music.

  • Best happy birthday ever.... Especially when he's your private teacher!

  • Yeah that's Trey alright, hes a trip!!!

  • His name is Trey Pevoteaux

  • Comment removed

  • IN THE BUTT

  • Notice the trombone player covering his ears at 0:16 lol

  • Oh how I want THAT MAN for my birthday!

  • insane ! AMOUNT OF AIR IN HIS DIAPHRAGM MUST BE ABLE TO BLOW A TREE DOWN

  • 2 people are flute players.

  • FUBAR

  • Wow, totally coooool!! I'll train hard and play like this on my freinds birthday <3

  • nice double C. I can barely hit a normal C :S

  • I love that he over shot that last note....

  • To appease the exponential level of stupidity growing on this thread:

The note at the end is a Double C - the note above high C - not a triple C.

    A double C is C7, or Concert Bb7.

Watch Andrea Tofanelli at ITG 2008 - that is a Triple C.

So instead of arguing about who can play what, and going on about how you can play a Double C (sans any actual tone, but with plenty of whining) on Youtube, go pick up your horn and practice.

Or - at the very least - be right.

  • That was so badass... Kudos+infinity, man . Amazing...

  • shaking is easy...but this guy tops me

  • My left testicle ruptured just listening to this.

  • ...wow...

  • OMG TRUMPET IS LIK SO COOL LIK OMG LETS FIGHT ABOUT IT. Don't you guys have like, homework to do?

  • @Xeno8345 Yep. Trumpet IS cool like that. It's not as cool as mellophone, but still pretty damn cool.

  • thats a triple C ? i didnt know that.. i can play it :)

  • I agree "ducttapenazil7"

  • what's funny is that those people probably have no idea how awesome that was.

  • Damn, that's a good double C.

  • @Ibanez3789 just saying, that was a triple C at the end

  • @TheTheTrumpeter Just saying, when my trumpet professor (who has played lead for Maynard, Arturo, The Temptations, and has been nominated for a Grammy) calls it a double C, I believe him.

  • @Ibanez3789 ok then. no point arguing over the note. i think its just called different things depending on the person, and i call it a double C

  • @TheTheTrumpeter But you just called it a triple C...

  • @Ibanez3789 ya i know. ive learned it as triple C. and you were talking about the last note right?

  • @TheTheTrumpeter Yes, the very last note. That is what most people would call a double C.

  • @Ibanez3789 I just call it a triple C, and if its a double C for you and other people it's fine.

  • @TheTheTrumpeter so a "double c" to you is two lines above the staff? LOL wow I never knew my range was so good

  • Comment removed

  • @Lchsmb2009 reading comprehension now owns you

  • @Ibanez3789 Definitely a double C, because he just happens to be my trumpet professor :)

  • Gospel chords and progressions in a jazz band? Sweet! I must teach my jazz band pianist and bass player the progression. Then we might get even more 1st places.

  • @euphoniumification that's not gospel at all. go search for Fred Hammond

  • Freckin awesome i wanna learn how to do that (crazy last note)

  • I would cry if that was my birthday. So beautiful

  • nice chops, i can trill like that on my bone, just need to get workin on my trumpet like that, damn awesome though!

  • damn lip trills....

  • nice screaming

  • very very nice

  • Kind of random but- Anyone catch the Macy's t-day parade? High school kid was screaming pretty nice, though it kind of got old after his solo.

  • Yes the Bill Chase thing. I caught that real nice too.

  • That was sweet. Its a university tho... not a HS.

  • ive been playing for 5 years now and i can hit a high c, not the middle one the high one. I know a trumpet teacher, he's been playing for over 40 and can hit a triple c and he just is amazing. because of him i started screaming. Ps. on trumpet

  • wow ive been playing trumpet for a year and two months and i could play a high E

  • doubt it.

    define high E

  • the high e before the double g,a,b etc.

and sometimes play a double c if im really warmed up

  • Comment removed

  • @123dofo if you can only hit a high C then you have never "screamed".

  • I wish I still had my trumpet.

  • I would love to know how he plays that one slur part or whatever and the best way for me to play that high

  • Honest to god, it's practice. And practice, and practice, and practice. With time, your embouchure will strengthen, and the stronger those muscles get, the better control and higher notes you'll be able to hit.

  • thanks 1 more question. what is the best way to practice to strenghthen your embouchure. im in highschool and I have the best range in my school and im only maxing out at high g's and sometimes a's(as in triple) and normaly i can only get high by playing high. by that I mean it doesnt seem like lip slurs help but as I keep playing high c's and up, my range gets better.

  • Triple A? You do know thats like...over 7 ledgers above the staff lol I think you mean double, cause I honestly doubt you can PLAY them lol

  • lol I thank you for checking me in case I was wrong but I did actually mean a triple a and yes I can play it but its about every blue moon which was why I was wondering how to make it consistent

  • Yea okay lol. Yea I've hit that before, keep in mind HIT lol. I hit it then like everybody in the band room just likes around like..wtf was that lol?

Consistent? Well to me, you got to have a bit of the "It" Factore. And, depending what works for you, a lesson plan designed for just range. Like, a good one. Like Cat Anderson if that would work.

Sorry but as far as I know, it's basically either you have that range, or you don't. Consistency with it has been done by a few people lol.

  • lol thanks....yeah I guess u are right about having it or not but it is funny to do it in the band room and just have everyone stop he look at u

  • Double and triple can mean the same thing. Some people consider 'middle C' to be 'high C', thus there being 'triple C.'

  • Jeff Ayers is the trumpeter playing the tune. He's a phenomenal trumpeter who once played with Maynard. He now teaches school and plays locally in MI. A great guy and fantastic player.

  • nice dubba C :3

  • nice

  • love it wen trumpets be screamin

  • Did any of you notice the gospel chord progressions played by the pianist and the bass player. That really put the icing on the cake. Man I know i'll be watching this about 30 more times.

  • Starting note is concert F, the one a few leger lines above the staff, it's G for transposing (assuming he's playing Bb).

  • naw the starting not was the G right above the staff (in Bb). trust me, I have my trumpet right here. lol

  • F concert. that would be a G

  • amazing

  • HES A BAMF

  • yt only lets me give 1 thumbs =[ lol. I agree with ya.

  • Lol, great playing!

  • haha awesomee

  • hahaha solid!

  • waz the guy's name?

  • Or the Band Name?

  • oh my goodness

  • I learned how to lip trill on accident. True story.

  • Woah! I wish I could do that! Can't lip trill though... Anyways, NICE man!!!

  • WOW!

  • You sir, are a BEAST.

  • dayum

  • People, I know this man personally, and I know for a fact that he does not lip trill but shakes his horn. He has also been playing for 30 some years, and is one heck of a horn player. So if you disagree with the prospect of shaking your horn to add minute pressure to the lip to cross the break, you just have not learned how many jazzers do it. I must agree that a lip trill is better than a shake and much harder to master. This individual can not lip trill.

  • Folks, guesswho2468 is right, the proper way without long term damage to your embouchure is using a slur without exerting pressure with the mouthpiece, although in the higher register it becomes more difficult to avoid. After playing for 23 years now, you learn a lesson or two.

  • And to do that, you give your base note just enough air to potentially move it to the next one up. Then slightly move your tongue between the "Eh" to the "Ee" positions (been a while since that topic's been covered, eh? lol) in your mouth, while at the same time raising and lowering your jaw ever so slightly!

  • anyone who says a shake is when u shake ur trumpet deserves to quit the trumpet and getr kicked in the teeth. u gotta be pretty decent to do a shake, its hard.

  • @coltkid24 aCTUALLY THE CORRECT TERM IS LIP TRILL AND YEA ITS REALLY HARD BUT U CAN ALSO SHAKE THE THE TRUMPET PRACTICE LIP SLURS ALOT!!! AND ULL GET IT LOL TOOK ME A WHILE

  • @coltkid24 so what when ever someone like doc severison or when The Boss did it they should have got kicked in the face your an idiot

  • @coltkid24 If they're shaking their trumpet to get a shake, I'd say they're doing enough damage to their teeth already lol

  • @coltkid24 shake and lip trill are different. you do actually shake for a shake. not necessarily your trumpet, but something

  • @coltkid24 you gotta be pretty decent to shake well. some techniques have you actually shake yer horn, not violently.

  • thank u

  • i didnt see any glass break :(

  • hahahah

    *trumpet solo* "cool!"

  • omg! u guys are such fuckin retards. my trumpet teacher played with maynard ferguson and the way you do a shake is lip slurring really fast from one not to another, not fuking shaking the trumpet

  • didn't everyone's teacher?

  • i wanna meet this guy. he's awesome.

  • A shake is not a lip trill.

  • retard

  • wow u just got raped. lol.

  • power own. pwn.

  • lol

  • WOO HOO!!!!!

  • This guy was my HS Band Director.

    He is the man!

  • I LOVE IT!!!!

  • Hamma geil, Respekt.Fetter Sound !!!!!!!!!

  • that blows my mind, thats awesome...just plain awesome, lol

  • A shake is different than a lip trill. A lip trill has an obvious break between the pitches. A shake is a little smoother if done correctly. Great video!

  • that owned

  • nice job...about time there is actually a decent trumpet video on youtube!

  • WAUUH:D

    greaatttt

  • how do you do that nifty vibrato?

  • are you talking about a lip trill? those really wide vibratos at the begginning?

  • yeah!

  • you keep the same fingering and just blow faster air to go up a pitch, and then they trill between those two notes.

  • Generally, I just use my tounge position to change the pitch.

  • I think he means the shakes.

  • I learn something new every day!

  • nah. shake is done using your hands and shaking the trumpet, therefore "shake." a lip trill is done using your lips, it's harder than a shake, and is more efficient the better you get at it. and yea like superstl said, lip trills have a huge difference in pitch.

  • hate to burst your bubble but the only difference between a shake and a trill is speed, and how wide apart the partials are. trills are also done in classical music with the valves.

you do NOT shake the trumpet for a shake. that's tremendously hard on your face.

everything you do on the trumpet is done with AIR, AIR, AIR. and control of that air!

get an Earl D. Irons book :D

  • FUCKING AMAZING!!!

Congrats dude, the end was awesome

  • man i am still amazed at that trumpet player!! absolutley wonderful!! he sems to have started a trumpet thing around youtube everyone is posting these trumpet happy birthdays!

  • loved it

  • Niiiiiice.

  • the last note is a double high c

  • ok I ma starting a band with horns (it's accually a ska band) and what advice can you guys give us?

  • keep being awesome. im in a ska band too!

  • we have had like one practice and no performances so you won't be able to find us :P but our name is Evertheless (we are a Christian band and our name comes from john 3:30 it is our goal be get ride of our selfish desires/motives and pride. We want to honour, serve and worship Christ even tho we all suck and screw up but thats kinda why we have Christ. His unconditional love, wisdom and power.

(I could keep going but I fear a sermon comeing on, so I will save the preaching for the pulpit)

  • Awesome man! keep it up. We're called Fine Young Men and we have a myspace. WARNING: The songs on our profile are EXTREMELY OLD and they were recorded in a bathroom closet. (YEs even the drums! hahahahah!)

  • practice a lot.

  • thnx.... :P

  • haha, no problem.

  • Fuck off guys!!!!! for youre information that is double high C.

  • lol ownage

  • It's a double C i think

  • Yea it's a double c

  • now THAT was cool

believe the last note was a double D, no?

  • What is that last note?

  • This guy is named Jeff Ayres and I was at a concert with him ripping with Maynard Ferguson. He has toured with Dizzy Gillespie too, and now he is an awesome band director, I was one of his students

  • arturo sandoval can rape that guy

  • Maynard in his prime was the best trumpet alive since Rafael Mendez. To say that he couldn't do better than that is an insult to his memory.

  • the comment below was an extreme compliment to the lead trumpet player of this video. It was not meant to compare Maynard to anyone. Maynard was my favorite trumpet player and he will be remembered by many as the greatest.

  • maynard bends this guy over and rapes him up the ass

  • what the hell is this? i compare the sound into a great boxing legend Pacquiao! that is a KO sound.

  • who is the lead trumpet player?? That was one of the most amazing songs I have EVER heard! Wow. Incredibly amazing. I don't think Maynard could have played that any better.

  • OMG...Klarity, Flexibility, Range, Skill, Tone...impressive is an understatement...DAMN THAT WAS ON POINT!!!

  • Absolutely AMAZING!!!

  • haha!! that guy was impressive. hell of a player!

  • The illusive double C hit nice and clean...verrrrrry impressive.

  • Oh get over it. That was damn fine.

  • HOLY CRAPP

  • damn! I could hear the note even after he stopped playing!

  • damn thats high... hes pretty good

  • I want that on my birthday!

  • Gotta love it!

  • nice! very musical

  • great chops, but there is still room for musicality in the upper register

  • You're such a douchebag.

  • You're the kind of guy that would say Maynard Ferguson sucked if you heard a recording, but if you knew it was him you'd say you loved it. Prick.

  • ohhhhhh man!!! hahahaha awesome

  • wow that is go high. I play trumpet and wow!!!! that was great!!!!

  • OMG,I NOW REALIZED I HAVE NO RANG!

  • LOL!!!!!

  • Crap--nice chops--you did it a fourth higher than my version (see video response)!

  • Dude, ouch~! DUde woah! DUUUUUUUUDE!

  • Yeah... Dude where's my high frequency hearing gone... ; )

  • Nice....very impressive...i put this one in my favorites...

  • Can I hire the cat for my B-Day in June?

  • hey, I'll find out... he may have discovered a whole new trumpet gig.. just the sceamin happy birthday song... he could probably hit 6 birthday parties a day.. $50 buck a shot and that's $300 a day! I did a gig on a ship for a lousy $300 a week when I was starting out...4-5hrs of solid playing a day.

  • Yeah, I think that's exactly what went through my head when he pulled that one out on us (BTW I'm the sax player in the front corner looking for my music until I start to feel the blood running down from my left ear and finally turn to see WTF is up :)
