I know that I've never really been in addict's shoes before, although I've been stupid with things before too. my dad has been an alcoholic for like 30 years now, and the docter siad he wouldnt last long if he continued, he already did rehab multiple times but he doesnt stop.
it makes the whole family upset, but we r kinda giving up, i love my dad but if he goes down because of the alcohol its his own fault.. and i will be upset more rather than pity, my uncle was an alcoholic too but he stopped.

Yes, at the beginning it is voluntary, but then again, isn't type 2 diabetes? What about heart disease? Lung cancer? I believe in genetic predisposition, and circumstances such as upbringing/negative events, can work hand in hand with this. At the end of the day you can just stop using if you have some strength and will power. All this AA/NA stuff is absolute rubbish-it just encourages a lack of self responsibility.

Most people would say that high blood pressure is a disease, I mean, it's certainly a medical disorder. In that context, doesn't the idea of addiction as a disease at least make sense? In my opinion it does.

I can't believe this reporters comments, the only problem Amy had was that she did not get help for her addictions soon enough. So many artists fall into drugs, but most are able to get out in time. Unfortunatly she wasn't able to. Her music was incredible, her voice so unique. She had so much to give. Everyone has their faults, and everyone has their tallents. @cigarbabe2 when Amy died they were no traces of illegal substances in her body. Although, she was 5 times the drink drive limit. Even though my mum drinks more than that everyday, it is not a lot. But Amy quit drinking for 3 weeks and started again and that's what killed her. Amy was clean off drugs 2 years before she died.

If your mother is x5 over the limit every day then you have a terminal alcoholic on your hands. It isn't normal. it makes the whole family upset, but we r kinda giving up, i love my dad but if he goes down because of the alcohol its his own fault.. and i will be upset more rather than pity, my uncle was an alcoholic too but he stopped.
and my uncle is a drug addict and ruin his kids lives, HIS fault.

@bgatzby True, the way addicts are viewed and treated is awful. But a disease it is not, in my opinion. I believe in genetic predisposition, and circumstances such as upbringing/negative events, can work hand in hand with this. At the end of the day you can just stop using if you have some strength and will power. All this AA/NA stuff is absolute rubbish-it just encourages a lack of self responsibility.

Most people would say that high blood pressure is a disease, I mean, it's certainly a medical disorder. Plus we know that it too is produced by genetic factors, cigarette smoking, diet, lack of exercise, and other medical conditions. In that context, doesn't the idea of addiction as a disease at least make sense? In my opinion it does.

I mean genetically I may be more prone to say losing my temper and being hot headed-I can't murder somone and say I have a "temper disease". People can stop using-they chose not to. I was addicted to heroin and cocaine for 6 years-I gre a pair of balls and detoxed myself and chose to never use again. No disease at all. At the end of the day you can just stop using-if you have Huntingdons or cystic fibrosis this isn't an option. I think disease is a way of taking away personal responsibility. She should have watched a documentary about Auchwitz, it puts things into perspective.

I can't believe this reporters comments, the only problem Amy had was that she did not get help for her addictions soon enough. So many artists fall into drugs, but most are able to get out in time. Unfortunatly she wasn't able to. Her music was incredible, her voice so unique. She had so much to give. Everyone has their faults, and everyone has their tallents. @cigarbabe2 when Amy died they were no traces of illegal substances in her body. Although, she was 5 times the drink drive limit. Even though my mum drinks more than that everyday, it is not a lot. But Amy quit drinking for 3 weeks and started again and that's what killed her. Amy was clean off drugs 2 years before she died.

If your mother is x5 over the limit every day then you have a terminal alcoholic on your hands. It isn't normal.
