  • seeing the age...i think maybe she was singing this with herself in mind

  • Don't know much about marianne faithful but I like this song. She is putting so much feeling in to it.

  • Raw and dirty. that,s why men love her but so do i for putting feeling in what she sings! not the best but she leaves herself in your head! stezyrezy

  • Es ist immer wieder schön solche Musik aus einer Zeit zu hören in der wir noch etwas jünger waren. Da kommt so manche Erinnerung auf. (Ich hatte damals einen Becker Mexiko in meinem Auto).

  • I didn't say Marianne Faithful was the first to record the song, but that she first sang it in 1974, which she did because I heard her perform it live in that year. I have my facts straight and therefore have not made a fool of myself. As for what is obviously a typo, let he who is without fault cast the first stone.

  • Super!!! Love the way she sings, great performance of a great artist!

  • She makes me remember Courtney Love. Maybe she was a kind of her in the 60's.

  • dr hook should be given thier props for giving us such a moving tune

  • I didn't know Marianne Faithfull and ear this song in the movie Cours Privé. I bought the song and saw the movie several times.

  • Just brilliant - full of feeling

  • Just DIVINE!

  • this is featured in THELMA & LOUISE <3

  • What's wrong with the "thousand lovers" then, can't you take precautions every time? Multiple partners - beats suicide every time...

  • This is one of my favourites and marianne does it as no one else could ever do it!

  • Heard this on silk on tv last night just had to hear more, it's so moving.

  • love this song so much i play this song every time i drive

  • She looks SOOO much like an older version of Kaley Cuoco, but that's besides the point... Listen to this song everyday in conjunction with "At Seventeen," and I GUARANTEE you'll be a suicide within a month!

  • @keen14you Hahhahah... And if I am one already??? Maybe I´ll turn less suicidal... Hhahah

  • i love it

  • wwwooooooooowww she ish high as a kite....

  • Super !

  • good playback !

  • If you're gonna ruin your nice powder-blue cadillac convertible by driving it off a cliff like Thelma & Luise, what better song to do it to than this?

  • I only heard this song for the first time on Sugar Rush and was great, when they drove into London, was a classic moment :)

  • she didn't twig that until she was 37? was she retarded?

  • bugeyes455858 Miming or not I give Marianne full credit , not only for thi song, but for just surviving through all that hell she endured. You are beautiful still,Marianne.

  • tres belle chanson avec bcp d intensié,pleine d evasion, parfaite dans thelma et louise, sublime film

  • Actually I made a typing error, it's "porte-parole" and my message is a reply to Bluevalleysongbird.

  • Stärker kann man nicht unter 'Drogen stehen!°!

    Trotzdem ein geiles Lied.

    Danke Marianne.

  • She's miming!!!!!!!!!!

  • Like everyone else on Musikladen.

  • She's not miming...Even if she were, she's an artist, isn't she, so she can play whatever she wants, even if it's not replicating her life. That's the job of artists. They are sometimes, actually most of the times, living lives that aren't theirs, but that make us think... Destinies that are broken. Do artists really have to live hell to make us understand it? I don't think so. They are here to show us what tragedy is, they are are the "porle-parole" of those who cannot express their sorrow.

  • @bluevalleysongbird The singer is using a different voice than normal projecting from the chest and not the throat. In a different chord she may have sounded like Cher 1966 or Cher Gypsy Woman whatever. It is said of Marnie Nixon that she could do a thousand voices each with their own personalities, hairdos, and charm. I prefer Tori Amos cause Marianne was too level headed and Tori was way over top with more zest than Esther Efrim number one composer...rite?

  • A particular beautiful voice and very beautiful melody too:*****

    Aurora

  • i know she is going to a nut farm. i miss my dad.

  • i turned 38 dec 3. God ! it hit me hard. this song i forgot i hard it in the 80s. i am crying my head off. i feel just like that . i have no life and what idid with what i had i caused it to suck. my father killed himself at age 40.

  • oh to be a Mars bar

  • immer wieder ein ohrenschmaus

  • Alwayys liked this song,

..and hoped - when I was a teenie - that this would never happen to me.

.... well - it shows the way i feel today in manner, that makes me shiver....

  • This song is the reason I found 37 a difficult birthday. 10 years on, and I've realised that it's all in your own hands. There's a time to do the housewifey stuff, and a time after that to find out what you really want to do with your life. I don't recommend the thousand lovers, but other than that, good luck!

  • You know. I thought I was the only person that really thought about the Lyrics of the songs we listen to. I've been listening to MF since I was 18. That was 27 years ago. I didn't understand what she meant with some of the lyrics...but as I lived life they made sense and I found myself saying...'NOW I get what she means" A perfect example of that would be "Brain Drain" Boy Do I get that one now. Now I know I'm not the only one paying attention. Thanks

  • I am 19..and reading what women who've seen more have to say gets me thinking.

  • Truly haunting song ..... GREAT!!!!

  • A great Shel Silverstein song! Dr. Hook also did a wonderful job on it....

  • a thousand lovers, rhiane???sure they'd be enough??)))

  • Maryanne defines cool, but take a lesson here kids, and even though she has a great pair of lungs (rack--hee) dont smoke !! Long live Lennon, Strummer , Berry and Rock and Roll.

  • Great Voice !!!

The German say : Geil !!!

  • This is not a rip-off of Hazel O'Connor. Hazel was still a teenage picking grapes in France when Marianne Faithfull first sang this song (1974). Get your facts straight then you won't make a folol of yourelf like you just have done.

  • @tarago100 No, this is actually a rip off of Dr Hook and the medicine show, This song, was written by Shel Silverstein and first recorded by Dr Hook in 1975, covered by Marianne Faithfull in 1979, after it was covered in 1976 by Lee Hazlewood

Please, get your facts straight and your spelling correct, so you will not make a fool of yourself like you have just done

  • First time I heard this song was on Thelma and Louise (it fit perfectly!)

  • Too bad she is lip syncing this. This is off her album exact. Unfortunately that's the way it was in the 70's and 80's on tv... especially foreign tv.

    Lookin good though!

  • Was für eine Stimme! Junge junge,da läufts einem kalt über den Rücken! Like Toni Childs!

  • great song, great lady, was always a fan of hers.

  • What happened to her voice compared to fifteen years earlier?

  • heroin, anorexia, and a nasty case of laryngitis compounded with cocaine use in the early seventies. If I remember right she was still dealing with addictions when this was filmed.

  • Well, I think her voice got better - not that I recommend her lifestyle choices for aspiring singers!

  • this song is one of the best and always will be.good old oldes for me

  • She's completely lipsyncing..

her voice sounds exactly the same as the official version... EXACTLY...

  • LOL

    Well I never !!!

  • Amazing song; wow! what a life she's had.

    Fantastic video-!

Nice job putting this together, fritz5153

  • Geile Stimme !!

  • She has the most thrilling husky smoker's contralto

  • Beautiful woman

  • I love tat song, always..

    Thx u sent me!

  • I love it

  • whats quadradic equasions got to do

    with this man

  • Look, Mick Jagger passsed up alot here. This woman is an expert on quantum mechanics and would have been capable of helping him solve his complex quadratic equations from first principles.

    You dig?

  • agreed, on second thought, kazrule is right, mick jagger did not pass up alot ...

  • Mick Jagger didn't pass up alot.

  • she certainly was very attractive here. l can see why mick jagger could not pass her up.

  • Love this song - always did since i first heard it in my youth.

Now I'm older and way past my mid-life chrisis, but the song still is in the top tow of mid-life-chrisis-songs together witl Pink Floyds' "Time"

Any suggestions to add to the top ten of mid-life-chrisis songs?

    /Groenlandshval

  • Doobieman11, wtf do you do here hurting your poor ears for? Sod off and don't bother people with a better taste (and spelling) than yourself.

  • Does anyone remember the Scandinavian movie where this song was used? I think it was back in the 70's

  • Monte negro?

The whole soundtrack was Marianne Faithfull I think

  • Yes, that was the movie. This was the perfect song as the lead character walked along a lake contemplating her life,

  • she looked better than mick did ar that time.

  • great never seen this footage

i had one of these light filters for my

old VHS man a while ago

out of it but still great

    cheers

  • IM LUCY JORDAN

  • great - i've often wondered wot your like - wen can we meet ?

  • Who gives a shit what she did, Really !

she has left more of a legacy than what you and i have

  • you are unkind. i do not like that.

  • unkind ????? not really coz i really like her music

  • Sorry, misread you post. Never mind.

  • according to her autobio, she did lots of

    acid.

  • she must have smoked like a chimney or worse for many years. Contrast her voice here to her voice in 1965

  • I was just thinking the same thing. For some reason I like her voice better as she got older. This song is much more distinctive now than it was when she sang it in the 60s.

  • Wow! Finally know a song from this soundtrack .."Thelma & Louise "...YAY!!

    :)

  • Lucy was that housewife down the road..or maybe the one who lay beside you at night.

  • Maybe there's a bit of her in all of us....

  • Thanks for this. Saw her do Kurt Weill's "Seven Deadly Sins" at Orchestra Hall in Chicago a zillion years ago - got her autograph - my husband left me (temporarily) and moved into an apartment and the autographed program was stolen!

  • This is my favorite song by Marianne Faithfull, a true legend. Who was Lucy Jordon?

  • guessing Lucy was anyone who never realised their dreams................

  • Marianne. Wonderful Wonderful. Pray you are healed and rested. Wish we could be in Luxembourg 6th 7th Feb. I know you will wow the crowd there. Your voice gets better and better. I still remember you going on stage in the Uk and singing As Tears Go By for the first time. I was in the wings and deeply moved by you pure voice. Bless You. Thank You. X

  • Such Ravaged Beauty

  • I like the version of Dr. Hook (Ray Saywer) more. But Marianne is also great with het broken voice.

  • wonderful...WONDERFUL!!!

  • fuckin great song ....lip synch or not fucking great ...its a bit hard to sing live on a TV show that doesn't want you to anyways.....

  • Oh Marianne, one of life's broken butterflys, I so hope life is good for her in Ireland now. Paul.

  • awesome song

  • forget mariannes past

    what a singer

    what a woman

  • I think Dr. Hook original wrote and/or sang this. She does a really good job with it, but again, she is lip synching; that is just so impersonal.

  • Actually - this was written by Shel Silverstein. Yes...THAT Shel Silverstein.

  • i wanna marry anne faithfull. meanwhile life's grand and winwood's new nine lives album is exxxquisite. powerfully and intricately woven genius to inspire and awaken. a special treat

  • Adore her and love this song and the whole album. A class act in my view.

  • I also found that beautiful song at Thelma and Louis and i tried to find the whole song. Thanks!

  • @Tammo131 My thanks is in your appreciation for my song and for the song in the hearts of so many people (not just women either). Growing older after writing these lyrics I had to put this on my "bucket list" to do it again with as many small town women as I could. / James C. Ronning
