you did a good job explaining and demonstraiting your foot work. Good camera angle also. It looks like your about where I am with that technique. I consider that heel toe. what ever we call it, it works. Thanks for the video it's inspiring
@GaryCancer .. i find it's smoother doing singles .. and seems to work better for me than doubles which to me always end up sounding sloppy because the 1st hit always ends up louder than the second. GOOD LUCK!! tell me how it goes
@GaryCancer I used to play that same way but i made the switch to singles almost a year ago, maybe like 8 or 9 months ago. I stopped heel toe because when recording it doesnt get picked up as much by a mic, and live situations its very quiet. it sucks tho cuz i could go really fast and now i cant quite yet! haha but its a work for a better cause
I think it also has to do partially with the pedal settings as far as volume goes .. I keep my beaters pretty far back .. but also .. this isn't the end all technique or anything .. none are .. I say ... learn all and when and where they work the best.. and also what works best for your body .. too much of .. "OOOOOO this is the technique (insert name here) uses ... so that's what I HAVE to do" and it's bs .. they all learned what they do on accident just by practicing a lot.
@zmanbrody .. i don't completly agree with your saying just play heel up .. i do say focus on it more .. but there's nothing wrong with experimenting with a few different things to see what you like best .. use them all for different things .. such as fast gallops .. this technique makes them really easy .. R(down motion) L (heel down hit) R( up motion) .. not arguing .. just throwin somethin out there
Thanks man....I am starting to struggle playing the traditional way. Now I understand when my friends ask if I roll my ankles. I'm going to work on Up Down the ankle rolls. Thanks again.
why do you play the double bass pedal without shoes instead with shoes? Is it better without shoes? Do you recommend? Or is just because you are showing the technique?
it's personal preference. i feel it is easier to play when i don't have 2 or more extra pounds added to my foot. nothing wrong with playing with shoes, nothing wrong without them..... it's all a feel thing
i don't get it how can you struggle to play 180 but can play 220 really easy? and by that i mean playing loud not some silent heel toe tapping that requires triggers..
different techniques at differnt speeds. @ 180 i'm still trying to use mostly leg, above that i move to mostly ankles. volume does suffer a bit but it's not volumeless light tapping.
i don't use this technique much anymore .. i can't get it to sound even, there are always accents
nice one man im gettin sum of the basic pearl doubles cus im gus startin on playin double bass they are around 145 quid do u rekon they will be ok? im lookin to play sum tech deth lol
they should be pretty good. the only difference btwn the powershifters and the powershifter eliminators is that the eliminators have the cams.. and i have mine set up basically out of the box settings except making the beater slightly closer. .. unless the pedal is complete shit with terrible lag.. it's all your feet and technique
to much talk? ya right if u think he talks to much then dont watch the vid, but i frankly think that 'how much he talks' he explains this technique(s) very, very well... thanks for these vids they are help to me because i suck at double bass because im just starting and i need to find a suitable technique for myself
extremely cool. I've been playing double bass for about 15 years and am pretty fast with plain old single strokes, but I wear out fast doing it that way. I can see how this would conserve enough energy to wail non-stop. thanks for the tip... gotta go home and practice this :)
it is slightly different from heel toe bc i don't use my heel to make a note. it's my whole foot and it is very possible to do it without your heel touching the ground at all
i am doing a straight run of 8th notes. that's why i say its different. steve smith calls it constant release in his dvd i call it up down. it is almost the same but there is a slight difference which makes it come out as straight 8ths instead of a quick shuffled double (the latter is what i call heel-toe)
its not heel toe, in heel toe you actually use both your heel and toe, in this you are just lowering your heel to force your foot to hit the pedal again.
cant stand heel toe,it tends to be accented, ivolving alot of tapping at high speeds,if you can do heel toe without these set back then well done. derek roddy is all about the hips, he doesnt use his feet or legs,he literaly stomps(its incredible),his feet are flat,he has a vid on youtube, check it out.
in my newer foot video i talk about swivel .. a few mins into part 2. i like it a lot more than the constant release.. .. i change favored techniques like nothing
no it isn't. but it starts with the same motion. instead of rocking your heel back keep it up and repeat the first thing you do. that was a bad explanation. search for bostic flat foot on youtube that should help you with that technique
i got a peral seat that does the same thing, comfy as fuck is your tensioning system on the bottom of it and u gotta use that long ass allen wrench?? or is it like one of those ones that do it by itself
you know dude if you lower your seat a bit it be easier for you to play i use to play with my seat high up but it srtained my legs, so i lowered it i think i have the same peral seat you have and i lowered it a bit and it makes things much easier, just a suggestion
thanks for the tip... but i've tried sitting low and it's just more comfortable for me to sit high and its also easier to get around the set because i'm above it more. and in case you were wondering... my throne is a roc 'n' soc hydro throne. most comfortable drum chair EVER
I like your stuff alot! It reminds me of a single stroke article I read for hands in Percussive notes (?) a couple of years ago. Great dedication to practise... Only thing, your commentary could be a little better prepared - I kinda lost the point somewhere in the middle!
thank you! i never write a script (even though i should) so i end up rambling a bit. even though its kinda bad .. atleast i'm not like jeff indyke's videos .. now HE is a rambler. lol
good instructional, but you should edit the video more, to cut and make it more colorful and such. Maybe giving us a demo of your blast beats b4 you actually started the instructional, and maybe background music?? LOL jokes, but seriously editing isnt hard. other than that, good job!

THE best video/s! i wish i could fix the volume somehow between speech and drum

isnt this moeller tech ?
Meatlooaf 2 years ago
The moeller technuique is applied on the snare drum, but I guess you could call it the moeller technique but on the bass drum.
Fond3ll 2 years ago
it's a similar motion with different muscles. it is the same concept.

precisely...heel toe! u dont use your actual heel alone, in heel toe...u rock your entire foot back and forths to create the double stroke
Sabiano 4 years ago
i'm not doing double strokes though.
