The disclaimer of the film says they used hight crane shots for the falling of alive animals (they can be clearly seen kicking on the air on the scene you enjoy so much) and then, professional vets drugged the animals and stained them in red for the beach take. Were they telling lies to calm the sensitive american public opinion when they saw the film? I don´t know. My point is that killing an animal for any artistic purpose is morally wrong.

Notice it was a stylized shot with a blue background, the animals were not killed. Anyhow after this movie they were probably shipped off to a meat factory for a much worse fate. I enjoyed the shot for the beauty of film making and this film's unique filming choice, not for senseless violence.
