  • The game was actually developed in (a heavily edited version known as GoldSrc) the Quake engine.

  • The scientists look like they all drank some polyjuice potion before Gordon (or the Ranger, to be exact...) saw them.

    In fact, this already HAS been ported to PSP, and the original half-life source was released, so it can too be ported to PSP, but it would be much harder. Anyway, it is very buggy in the quake version, and you can't progress very far due to not being able to crouch etc, so you have to cheat in most areas to progress, heck, the unforeseen consequences chapter has the player half-way through the floor so you fall right through, but in all, it's an excellent port to the quake engine.

    Trust me, once you've downloaded and tried it, it's crap. The original is MUCH better.

  • @FormerHuman Precisely... I REALLY don't understand why anyone would invest ANY work into something like this. Doom 3 in Wolf 3D or Wolf 3D in Doom 3, OK - might be worth looking at... But HALF-LIFE 1 IN QUAKE??? OMG... That's like putting a Viper engine into a Corvette - a bit different, but by no means interesting... (Sorry to those who did that...)

  • Half-Life used a (heavily modified) version of the quake engine anyway so thats why this port works well. It looks like the early beta and alpha versions of Half-Life.

  • One neat feature is that GoldSrc engine can distinguish walking sufraces, like when you walk on metal it sounds like it , when you walk on grass it sounds like grass etc.

  • @Pathfinder0624 I don't think Quake 1 could render transparencies. That's why you can't see through the surface of water.

    The Source engine has had several upgrades. The Orange Box got a new version after the version used in Half-Life 2: Episode 1, and the newest version is in Portal 2. If they do a "Source 2", it will be based off the Source 1 engine.

  • Very funny. HL1 and its engine is approximately on the level of Quake2. Not Quake1 which this one uses. It hasn't even got crouching and lighting effects

  • @justforgarbage You DO know HL1 was build on the Quake 1 engine, right? Although VALVE made quite a few improvements over the Quake engine, it was surely NOT the Quake 2 engine.

    Probably because GoldSRC uses the same file format that Quake uses for its maps, namely the .BSP format. That makes things a little easier to port over, I'd imagine.

  • From what I hear, getting half life 1 maps running in quake is simple enough, since HL1 maps are like BSP 1.2 where quake would be 1.0. But to get all this running is fascinating.

  • so you couldn't parent objects, no alpha channels, vertex lighting on models is pretty much non existent, no facial animations, the lighting is very crude, sprites are not having a good time... and no decals either. Fascinating shit.

  • Quake 1 was one of the granddads of 3d engines, but of course they passed on. GoldSrc is a modified version of the Quake engine, on which the Source engine is based.
