P-I-G-P-E-N!!!! - WHAT A TRAGIC LOSS TO THE MUSIC WORLD - I LOVE THE DEAD BUT RECKON HAD PIGPEN LIVED ANOTHER DECADE OR TWO THEY'D HACE BEEN A WHOLE DIFFERENT, MORE BEAUTIFUL BEAST!!!
That was awesome. Billy was slappin' that symbol like crazy near the end. And the rest of the drums too. This could've easily been in in Woodstock..."the release." It was raw but fully in the spirit of The Dead and Woodstock ta boot.
High Time was too slow and sloppy and Lovelight was too rocking to be played at 1 or 2 in the morning. Wouldn't it be classic if they had played the longest ever Dark Star at Woodstock instead? A 55 minute version?!?!?!?!
Dark Star (18:30) and Lovelight (30min) were the two longest songs performed at Woodstock
@SkankBangertonsays: Well I have to disagree about "Turn On Your Love Light." I have the whole thing on the new remastered DVD set and, sheesh, it NEVER takes off. They keep trying and trying to hit stride and they never make it, for the WHOLE FRICKIN' 30 MINUTES! It eventually becomes a game, to see how long you can last through the footage. HOWEVER, the length of it starts getting you into it.
What are the extra videos (compared to the Directors Cut) that are in the new version?
Are the bands played in their real order?
How long is the Dead's Lovelight in the movie?
My bootleg LP of the show has a total of 47 minutes for Lovelight with a lot of boring jamming from the 20-40 minute mark, yeah, it wasn't quite a classic jam - but I think its interesting that GD played both of the 2 longest songs at Woodstock.
@TheDragonCult: The "Director's Cut" version comes on 2 DVDs plus a third DVD of previously unreleased performances (and depending on if you get the Target or Amazon version, a fourth DVD is included each containing two separate sets of three more performances, kind of a rip off but ya know). The bonus DVD contains: Joan Baez, One Day At A Time; Country Joe McDonald, Flying High; Santana, Evil Ways; Canned Heat, I'm Her Man and On The Road Again; Mountain, Beside The Sea and Southbound Train.
@TheDragonCult: CONT. The Grateful Dead, Turn On Your Love Light (all 30+ minutes of it); CCR, Born On The Bayou, I Put A Spell On You, and Keep On Chooglin; The Who, We're Not Gonna Take It (the complete version) and My Generation; Jefferson Airplane, 3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds; Joe Cocker, Something's Coming On; Johnny Winter, Mean Town Blues; Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Morning Sunrise; and FINALLY Sha Na Na, Teen Angel.
That's Utah's old traveling buddy Rosalie Sorrels jamming with Garcia and David Bromberg, although she is erroneously identified as Mimi Farina on other YouTube posts of this clip.
im pretty sure that that explosion was electrical because the dead isn't really a band that does to many explosions. it was raining that day so the mic kept electricuting phil so thats another reason it was kept out of the movie.
@solar7: You know with the way the band reacts to it, it seems like it was totally staged. Here the wires to the amps short out and no one even moves or seems worried in the slightest. Ha ha ha, maybe it was a inside joke as to how they went on after The Who two years earlier at The Monterey Pop Festival who covered the stage with smoke bombs.
As Bob Weir said himself: "It was raining toads when we played,Everytime i touched my intstrument i got a shock. I was conducting! There was a big blue spark about the size of a baseball and i got lifted off my feet and sent back about 8 or 10 feet to my amplifier. It was probably the worst set we ever played. Some people made there careers at woodstock we've spent years trying to make up for it"
I wanted to go to woodstock but my mother wouldn't let me go.:-(

i love the dead and i can see why they left this out of the movie. this was not the dead's finest hour.

Does anyone really know what that explosion was at the end that seemed to make Mickey Hart disappear? Was it staged?

Their performance was a little sloppy, but I don't think it sounded bad enough to be left out of the movie.

yea i know... ive read that too......... which was why i was wondering why this video DIDNT show him being shocked.............
fiman16 3 years ago
He was probably on major LSD like the rest of woodstock. Who knows if they were getting shocked really.
