  • the background track for my misspent youth. you are missed sorely, jim. and you're playing what looks exactly like my vintage ovation, purchased new, when i was. new, relatively speaking.

  • Listen to the background when they perform. No shouting! People are actually sitting quietly and LISTENING to the music. Awesome! :')

  • some of you people on here are so fucking gay all you right about is how all new music sucks, buncha lamos if u ask me, croces the man and never gets old but arent yall tired of, WOOHOO SWHHWEET HOME ALLIE-BAMA!! and of course, DONT SHTOP.... BELEVIN!! and just a little, BEENNY BEENNY BEENNY ANDA JEEEAATSS!! like damn classic rock stations just play the same old shit, embrace the times people even some nigger music is pretty good now!

  • man that ovation doesn't cut for the lead like the old martins they played earlier..

  • guys like Jim Croce, Harry Chapin and James Taylor ARE music. The wasteland they call "top 40" is a wasteland of awful offal. Period.

  • 38 years and still regreting it Upper Darby still misses you.

  • 3 people have no name

  • this guy is just pure talent nothing less

  • one of time greatest poets thx Jim

  • @debralimo hi

  • Jim Croce left this world farrrr too early!

  • two people didn't get a name,,,

  • 1973? and the massage still shouts out loud and clear in the year 2011. Singers and song writers of days gone by... god bless them all.

  • We don't have songwriters like him anymore.

Then again, songwriters like this one only come around once in a lifetime.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I found out two days later that the same day I was buying one of his tapes from the vending machine in the Zody's at the intersection of Cherry Ave. and South St. he was involved in that fatal accident. I still have that cassette with the green cover and the original 'Photographs and Memories' LP that was released shortly after his death. And they are not for sale at ANY price.

  • When I finished Basic training at Ft. Leonard wood. I was waiting on a bus with my new "WALKMAN" , to go to the ST. Louis airport. A guy sat next to me and asked what my MOS was I said "Engineer" of course. He then asked What I was Listening to. I handed him the cassette case It was Jim Croce's Greatest Hits, He said " I can't believe it, an Engineer with class! I said my name's Slim, so watch it.. We both laughed, and Later I let him Listen to the tape.

  • @65jackstraw95 Like your story like it alot

  • @upperdarbybill Thank you very much. There will be some day soon I hope more to tell. I'm working on an audio of Jimmy singing a Paul Williams song called "That's Enough For Me" to upload complete with original unpublished photos and paintings with Maury. It was recorded by Jim on his reel to reel at home in late 72 to early 73.

  • Norman Gimbel wrote this but Jim made it his own song. Was the title track to his final album. I think the last song he ever recorded for it was his guitarist, Maury Mueheleins, "Salon and Saloon, which was just Jim singing with a piano.

  • @MrBeatlefan57 I had heard the last song he recorded was Thursday by Sal Joseph (Joe Salviuolo) the week before he was killed.

  • @acoustic61 They recorded "Thursday" on thursday 13th. 1 week later Thursday 20th. Last year, June 2010 Joe 'Sal' past on a,,, you guessed it. Thursday. I hope they're together again.

  • @acoustic61 Yea? dig this fucked-up scene; "Thursday" recorded 9/13 a thursday. 9/20 1 week a thursday don't have to go there. Do I? June 2010 a thursday ( I think the 24th) 'Sal' left us to be with Maury & Jim. Who said "What's in a name"? God so knows how I hate that day. Jimmys neighbor Billy.

  • any body dosn't like this can kiss my ass

  • Thank god he came out in the early 1970s because if he tried to have a career today he would never be signed in a billion years and nobody would have ever heard these beautiful songs. Today they would have told him he wasn't pretty enough and he didn't use autotune and sound like Kanye. I hope the music industry rots and dies today, I saw a guy just like Croce last year playing in a dive, blew me away, meanwhile absolute fucking shitbags like Lil Wayne and Chris Brown are relentlessly promoted.

  • @JamesTKirkCobain all you say is true, and sad. however, like the junk they give us on TV and the drek in the movies, it's cuz that's what the audiences want. so, in the same way that we get the politicians we deserve, we get the entertainment we deserve too. all that aside, he was a master. heart, soul, and a voice that, once it gets in you, you can't shake.

  • @JamesTKirkCobain I am sorry mate but I have to disagree with you. Melissa Etheridge does a modern version of this type of music. Especially her first record. People know who the special ones are.... Jim was one of a kind as you well know and I think he would have made his mark no matter what decade he arrived in. At least that is my hope. :)

  • @JamesTKirkCobain Wow ! I I always wanted to say those exact words regarding Jim Croce ! You know your music !

  • @JamesTKirkCobain Couldn't agree with you any more. I honestly get pissed off every time I turn the radio on, listening to what people are calling the "top 40" songs out there. The music industry has become a "good looks" and popularity contest, and not even a music contest.

  • Very true, I agree with you ...

  • I'll never forget having to tell my sister Jim was gone when she got home from school. We loved him so much. He was one of the most talented singer/songwriters of our time and his loss will always be felt. His legacy these songs, and his son. This song is one of my personal "theme" songs and it always brings a tear to my eye.Thank you for sharing this.

  • even if he didnt write it i wouldnt be as moved by or believe it as much if anyone else sang it.

  • @loveablehippygirl67 You So got that right!!!

  • even if he didnt write this song i wouldnt believe it as much if anyone else sang it.

  • This song has always moved me since I was 15.

  • A true giant !

  • "And I'm gonna go there free" Thanks Jim. Thanks.

  • I'm only fifteen years old, but this is still one of my favorite songs. I listen to it on my iPod when I run in the morning before school.

  • it's nice when young people hear old songs. it will be always in our minds. I'm from Barcelona and I didn't know him but now this song make me feel younger. This is aswell one of my favourite songs. Thankyou Jim.

  • The most amazing lyrics ever.. I can't even describe them without crying

  • @reconjar Yes! Indeed, however "I Got A Name" was written by Norman Gimble & Chas. Fox show writers but they were already hip to who was the best man to record it for the movie 'The Last American Hero' . The true story of Jr. Johnson 1 of the founders of N.A.S.C.A.R. (Jr. Jackson for the film) w/ Jeff Bridges & Gary Busey.

  • Always wondered who could hate this man and his music! Now I see there are two morons in the world who hate all kind of music. Dudes...or girls.......get a life and really listen to the music instead of hating! You must have miserable lifes. this man was great...read a little and find out!

  • excellent lyrics by a man who left us too early.

  • @OrangeRushMarvel Again, the only top 40 hit that Jim did not write. ( N. Gimbel & C. Fox

  • did this guy have a tough life? He died at 30, and here he looks well over 40

  • @jms805

Yes, he had a very tough life. He did a stint in the military. He drove trucks. He and his wife Ingrid lived below poverty level while he did gigs at night. There were no rich parents supporting them. He broke his ass to support his son A.J. Constant touring and his wife breaking his balls made him look 10+ years older.

  • Cheech Marin should play him in the movie about him. Great lyricist.. truely gifted.

  • This is such great song. great melody and arrangement and one of the most positive messages in any song. Miss you Jim and Maury.

  • I was a big fan of Jim Croce. I remember hearing the news about him the next day after he was killed in the plane crash. I was 10 years old at that time. I am going to be 48 in a few months. I started sobbing when i seen this video. His music brings back lots of memories from when I was a kid growing up in Dayton, Ohio. I guess it is not the duration of life but the donation. I was in Las Vegas, Nv last year and seen an autographed Jim Croce Guitar. If I had the money I would of bought it.

  • @hemi426bee69 - I am 46, same story. These songs moved me when I was young and they still do.

  • @hemi426bee69 Yo! I had the same reaction 1st seeing this video. I was 16 and lived 7 blocks from Jim and brother Rich and mom Flo when it happened. Ain't been right since. God bless you & all Jim & Maury's fans.

  • "hate speech"

means the Marxist egalitarians have their world view usurped with logic...

  • We remember you, Jim and Maury.

  • rip jim.

  • this makes me think where or how big they would of gotten if that tragic event didnt take place i know for sure he would of influenced music a ton more, he is just a real straight shooter when it comes to songs

  • Thanks for disabling this video AFTER I posted it on facebook. Guess you really didn't want to share a great classic...

  • theres something in his song that sometimes you felt you wanna cry with.. thanks for your songs jim...

  • The Seventies was a weird time. Marvelous music but so many fine artists died at the peak or near the peak of their fame.

  • @roscoegino

yes unlike todays manufactured and hyped artists...who should die

but they have too many like themselves in the intelligentsia that keep them

    in the publics eye....

  • @SNOOOOOO8 Stupid fucking INBRED

  • @fitasafiddle123

    snort a turd

    turd

  • @SNOOOOOO8 Ahh, poor lil Nazi gonna cwy like a baby...lol

    Boo hooooooo.....

  • @SNOOOOOO8 Snort a Turd? Well how do i snort you?

    lol....moron

  • @SNOOOOOO8

sorry I have an opinion and you are angered by it....

    your "tolerant "

    that is your groove dude....

be happy with your world view as I am with mine

  • @SNOOOOOO8 And STOP messaging me for sex SNOT, i am not gay moron. Get it? NOT GAY.

  • The story of my life.

  • Always on my mind...

  • NOT SONGS LIKE THIS TODAY!!!

  • This is an awesome acoustic set here. If Bob Dylan did a version like this, it would sound good with piano and vocal. Seeing Jim Croce in this video... he looks a little bit like Sacha Baron Cohen (a.k.a. "Borat"). Don't you think?

  • SO GOOD AND SO SAD TOO WOW

  • I guess this was Jim and Maury's last appearance. It was broadcast Sept 14, 1973 , 6 days before the accident. The Midnight Special was live (a small delay perhaps). But Jim's mustache was down almost to his chin and that's what he looked like at the end. Amazing footage. Tommy West, his producer. is at the piano. A different time kids today would never understand.

  • @NYVoice I'f I'm mistaken, I apologize but I think this was a rerun from the previous month

  • jim; all my friends in ecuador love you.

  • Jim...he a dreamer......only that "life passed him by"... and the dream was crushed, but the song and the name have remained to inspire other people dreaming...

  • 2 kool

  • One of the greats.I hope philadelphia will someday realise we had a amazing singer and song writer.God bless Jim.

    BOB SHETZLINE!!!!!

  • @Shetzguitar Truly so. But make that Upper Darby Delaware Cnty.

  • The last American hero to die was Jerry Reed. A man who could really play a guitar and who admired the music of Jim and Maury. All three men were living ledgends when they walked this earth. America is going to shit thanks to the government and todays music went to shit years ago. Thank God for old recordings of the last few musical heros. The heros of good music are pretty much all gone now!!!

  • Acoustic. . .perfect and beautiful! Jim was a true gift.

  • @ConKing What an amazing singer. Jim sings with the voice of America.

  • @remspoon truly amazing, but Jim sings with the voice of the WORLD

  • What can you say. A true great talent. Man the 70's were great.

  • '' THE LAST AMERICAN HERO ''

  • Mark Twain with a guitar...Thanks Jim, you were really something.

  • @craigjsorensen One! I.G.a N. was written by Norm Gimble & Chuck Fox ( Happy Days, Lav. & Shirl.). Two! If you listen you can hear Jim sing "I got a .... in each verse.

  • @craigjsorensen He didn't write it .. :)

  • @SONICPOWERS plane Crash

  • Another GREAT musical artist taken from us in a PLANE CRASH! Planes are safe, in my opinion, but when you travel more, being a star, then the odds go up for bad things. Len P.

  • Shouldn't it be, "I've got a name?"

    Just asking.

  • My favorite Jim Croce song. I was thrilled when I went to see the movie "Invincible" and this song was played at the very beginning. The man was taken way too soon.

  • Piano makes a mistake at 2:38? strange

Love Jim Croce, great music. Picks you when your down, etc

  • @ralph122

Probably. But that's live music. Real people, real instruments. No synching or overdubs.

  • Unbelievable performer with one-of-a-kind talent. Poignant. Thanks for posting.

  • It's almost too sad to watch this video knowing what was coming soon after, but I reckon it adds extra resonance when you do. Though it's been said many times before Jim was taken way too soon. He had so many more songs to sing.

  • @SECAMsLive to sing... for all of us

  • Jim Croce was enjoying 2 years of music bliss when he died in that horrible plane crash in September, 1973. Between 1972-1973, his albums went GOLD & Platinum, and he had #1 song with "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" and "I Got A Name" was becoming another hit in the USA. Such a tragedy to see a musician die so young (30) after working his ass off trying to make a name for himself. RIP, Jim and thank you for your music.

  • Jim Croce never gets old, what a talent we lost. Timeless.

  • No lip sync, this was when talent ment something rather than looks.

  • @billb89 Yeah. Today music stinks.

  • Has anybody noticed that his vocals are perfect with each of these performances? And I don't think they are lip synched. You can tell that from the instrumentals.

  • The little things do matter. Like my name.

  • NICE

  • R.I.P Jim & Maurry

    from Chicago

  • man he was awesome.

  • R.I.P

    From Earth ☮

  • from california

  • R.I.P jim croce

  • R.I.P. from australia

    I love you Jim ='(

    I'll always love you *cries*

  • He looks exausted

  • He is, touring and gigging is exhausting. its and amazing amount of work playing everynight onstage till 10:00 or 11:00 and then having to get up at 6:00 am to make the next show.

  • Oh, for sure. Not a criticism, just an observation. And he was within days of his tragic passing, no? That's what I was thinking. In so many other clips he has this twinkle in his eye but not here. It gave me a little shiver.

  • I know, he looked like he was for lack of a better phrase, really, really, fu**ing sad.

  • Agree with you on that....His eye's were almost cold and empty...Great song and man!!

  • like the way they put the screen in 3 parts really cool watching all 3 sing together.

  • beautyful song...

    RIP

    From Brazil

  • integrity.

  • THE LAST AMERICAN HERO

  • NICE SONG RIP JIM

  • OMG, I remember this. I forgot that I saw this when I was just a kid (9 years old). I LOVE THIS MAN"S MUSIC!!! Why does life always take good people from us when they're just getting the credit they deserve?

  • R.I.P.

  • Well, who wrote the song? Someone must have recognized its brilliance.

  • @Dunkleosteus9 It was written by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel for a movie called Last American Hero. As far as I know, it's the only song Jim Croce ever recorded that he did not write himself.

  • I love it ! Excellent songwriter with a memorable voice. There aren't too many like him. Thanks for the upload chevy505, I gave you a 5 star rating. If you get a chance check out the "Shake For Me Now" video in my site. Thanks

  • Amazing song. Too bad Stone Temple Pilots ripped it off with thier song "Interstate Love Song". Now, if any of you aren't familiar with this tune, liten to I've Got A Name, then flip over and give Interstate a listen. I saw an interview with Weiland once where he claimed Interstate just "came" to him. Yeah, came to him in the form of a Jim Croce song. Now, paying tribute is one thing, but ripping off a great artist is another.

  • Hi smckey, Jim Croce was amazing yes, but he didn't write this song. I listened to "Interstate Love Song," and the intro sounds a bit like the intro to "I Got a Name," but not enough to call the song a rip off. Of course this is IMHO.

  • I didnt say Jim wrote it, but it is a Jim Croce recorded song. And that hook in both songs is damn near identical. But then again, Vanilla Ice didnt rip off Queen and the Cili Peppers didnt rip off Tom petty. IMHO. :P

  • yeah! i agree with you there. i never really made a connection between the 2. but now that i think about it, the only other part that sounds similar in the 2 songs is the part at :55. ie D, C#, B, A, G#, A, B, etc.

  • It is difficult to watch this video when you realise that it was only 1 week later when he, Maury and others were killed. So very sad.

  • i know! :( i was 8 or 9 when that happened. can still remember feeling sad when my Dad came home from work one day and told me the news.

  • @intray6591 look on the bright side they have left us with some rare treasures....Miss you JIM !

  • @intray6591 A week before they got killed? Whoa. I knew he got killed in '73, but I wasn't sure how long between this performance & their deaths.

  • How do you know it was a week later? I can't find enough TV credits on IMDb to determine that.

  • @intray6591 Wow, I figured this performance was soon before his death, but I had no idea it was only 1 week away. How sad!

  • @fowlerbookcritic For sure.....as I recall, the album that this song was on wasnt even released yet at the time of his death

  • @intray6591 wow didnt know that.. he was an incredible talent and had a good soul.

  • @intray6591 YES IT IS

  • Grazie Jim...

    You will be missed forever...

But at least I know you are up there with all of our dear ones...

Thank You for stopping by...and share this great poetry,,,

  • Hey is that Will Ferrell on piano?

Just kidding, great song for real.

  • you've left a wonderful music jim.....you are a treasured memories that remains forever in our heart

  • Timeless.

  • '''THE LAST AMERICAN HERO'''

  • Anybody think race driver Boris Said resembles Jim Croce?

  • The guitar player is Maury Muehleisen, who died in the same plane crash with Jim on Sept. 20, 1973. RIP, Jim. RIP, Maury.

  • What about the pianist? Who is he and did he die also?

  • STP totally ripped off this song for "intersate love song"

  • I agree. Argue all you want, but it's true.

  • the best

  • Sooooooooooooo beautiful

  • god bless u jim croce

    thx for the wonderful music

  • I dont really like folk/country music...but this song is GREAT!!!!

  • Why do the great ones leave so early?

  • WE ALWAYS LOVE YOU JIM !!!

  • They can change their minds but they can't change me......I've got a dream. God I love that line. Wicked!!

  • Thanks for posting, always loved Jim, he's the best.

  • He is missed...thanks for the music,Jim.

  • I jus Love this Legend so much!!! Jim is and always will be the best music that country rock has ever heard!and even way beyond.....Such rare and unique talent is truly a blessing!!!

  • Thanks for sharing Kurtkords, I know you can play the guitar like that too!

  • Man what a great song!

  • great song

  • I love the piano two guitar combination in this performance. Most of Jim's live performances were just he and Maury. While that too was amazing, this is a nice change of pace. Thanx for the post.

  • I was very young when he died before I could listen to music and only heard of him after he was dead. Im curious since he died young it appears he didnt become famous until after he was dead? Kinda like James Dean's rebel without a cause was released after he was dead.

  • well he died right when he was getting famous. A couple of songs he had just recorded. Makes you sad to think what more he may have written had he lived.

  • does anyone know if the piano player is still alive?

  • Comment removed

  • The piano player is Tommy West, one of Jim's friends and producers. He is still alive and resides in New Jersey where he owns and operates a music studio.

  • sorry ... I should read before i respond.

  • Terry West is alive.

  • Correction: Tommy West

  • One of his most brillant songs

  • You are a serious douche bag...out of respect for Mr. Croce I will say no more here, however, if you wish to be torn apart online feel free to send me a comment, jerk.

  • y did he have 2 die? such a good man with suc strong dreams!

  • Jim was 1 of a kind and his vocals, are Beautiful...Flawless!!!I miss The Legend!!!

  • seconded! I can only imagine what kind of amazing tunes he'd be coming up with nowadays. The man had unrivaled staying power.

  • his voice is so unique
