@energeticlear On a flat, under my own power, I've gotten to the low 30mph's, and I'm not a particularly strong rider. I'm sure a strong rider would have no problems hitting the high 40 mph's on a flat, and probably faster.
I ride a recumbent and I would rather take a spill on my bent than a conventional upright. I spose I could go sliding on some loose gravel and flip sideways. I think the potential is much higher for serious injury riding an upright.
@supercooper92 I've fallen on it a few times, but never at top speed. You don't really get tangled in it, kind of a slide out where you eventually slide off the bike as it's heavier than you are. At low speeds, you're so low to the ground that it's like rolling out of bed. At high speed, you would have a good road rash on the hips, but crashing at speed on a standard road bike (much farther to fall before you hit the ground) is a much more hazardous affair (broken bones etc...).
@theaesthetics Strike that..reverse it...you're heavier than the bike, so the bike tends to slide out from under you and keep going, while you "slide" to a stop.
I get a sore neck riding an upright. Is there a similar problem with this layout as it is one reason I'd like to go recumbent in future. Also, I'm curious as to the design/composition of a recumbent seat. I know the trikes tend to go for an open weave mesh type for their seats, but have not seen a recumbent bike in person. I want to build my own bike and at this stage the seat is more mysterious that the rest of the machine. Any tips, or video for that matter of the construction?
One of the great things about recumbents is that they're a cure for the sore neck (and butt and wrist and arm) syndrome . That being said, a very reclined recumbent seat such as the seat on this M5 Lowracer/Lightning U2 WILL hurt most folks necks, so I'd recommend a recumbent with a more upright seat angle. The seat on this bike is made from carbon fiber, but some 'bent manufacturers use fiberglass as well, and many manufacturers will sell their seats separately .
Really depends on the rider. For me, and I'm not a strong rider, the thing rolls with no effort at 17mph, cruises with moderate effort in the low to mid 20's, and sprints in the low 30's. For a strong rider, these speeds would be much higher. To get an idea of the bike's potential, at the one hour race during Cycle Vision (Lelystad) Leo de Nooyer from Middelburg established a new world record by riding 53.44 kilometres, despite a head wind of 4 Bft! This record is still unbeaten.
The longest ride I've ever done on the U2 lowracer was 70 miles. As long as the pavement is nice, the wind is calm and there's no real climbing, I don't have a problem staying a little over 20mph for a ride that long, so it makes the prospect of a sub 5 hour century pretty realistic for me. Now I just have to find a century with nice roads, light winds and no real climbing!
You're right, the muscles used while riding a recumbent are completely different from those used on a road bike, and they even vary between different recumbent types. Some recumbents are much better at climbing than others. From reports, the Carbent high racers are great climbers. The U2 doesnt like climbing much, even if I have my glutes built up :)
These were modified M5 recumbents. Your best bet would be to contact M5 through their web page. I think a rough idea of pricing after having it shipped would be around $3000.00. If you check out Bentup cycles, Dana has a few different lowracers for sale.
How much speed you have achieved???

Anyone else thinking about how f*cked you'd be if you fell off one of these things.
You'd tear up a much higher area of your body whilst still entangled in the thing; there would be no way out!

@chillz27 You can get some very similar bikes for much less, now made in Asia, from Actionbent. You can Google Actionbent to have a look.
