  • Very well made! Have you showed your animation to the BBC?

  • @AH3D001 Yes.

  • This is really good, with a bit of improvement, this would be good for DVD release.

  • This is good, especially the regeneration scene, but the Doctor is a little too Chinese in the closeup! Overall it's really good! 5 stars!

  • heyy, I tried to go on your who3d website but it was unavailable :( when will it be up, or have you changed domain? great vids btw :)

  • This is rather incredible, bro. How did you know what angles to film at etc . . . did you somehow get a script of this with the director's cues? Also - how do all the audio files still exist for the missing DW episodes. They call them 'off air' recordings but what does that mean? Were kids taping the audio only from the TV sets? And if so, why don't we hear any bleed over room noise etc . . . ?

  • @travisdoucettemusic Hey there, in short.

Yes, I have a camera script, plus off-air stills. The audio was recorded by connected a reel-to-reel tape recorder to a TV set at the time. Earlier episodes were recorded "in the room", and there is often noise from the people in them, however because multiple copies of each episode exist, they can normally be removed by cutting to different versions.

    Cheers, glad you enjoyed.

    A

  • @colonelbarker Well I am very impressed. So are you saying that reel-to-reel machines were connected directly to the TV sets? What kind of connections would these be? RCA cables? It's quite amazing that we have audio recordings of all the missing episodes. Are there any missing episodes we don't have audio for? Where were the stills taken from and for what purpose were they created? Where else can I see some of your work. This may be the best and closest thing we can have to seeing this!

  • @travisdoucettemusic Hey- in short. No- RCA didn't exist then, it was by physically wiring the tape recorder to the speaker wires inside the television. (Not reccomended!!) The photo refereces were called "tele-snaps" and were off screen photos taken every 15-20 seconds by a man called John Cura and production staff bought them as a record of the show.

Audio exists for all missing Dr Who, however other shows like "Out of the Unkown" this isn't the case. As for telesnaps, arnd 1/2 the eps exis

  • sweet, nice one man

  • "Hey come on Doctor, wakey wakey!" I love that line.

  • Am I the only one who loves the NN XX ZZ CO things?

  • @Scarperguy Nope it's the whole reason I made it.

  • @colonelbarker Brilliant. They should bring them back! It's sorta retro, but also very original

  • I watched episode 1,2 and 3 on Dailymotion and then Came here and watched episode four here. And I tell you Sir. This is Good Enough For DVD. If you can do it why can't an organisation do it and get what's Needed on DVD

  • you spelled michael craze wrong :P

  • @TheEocene Whoops. Didn't notice that. Four years later, and only just saw it. I was 99% sure I matched the BBC video.

  • @colonelbarker Haha, It's fine - I'm sure only supergeeks like me would notice :)

  • @TheEocene True, I will fix it in the new version for you!

  • @colonelbarker Ooh, there's going to be a new version? Excellent! Really great news - love this one, by the way.

  • @TheEocene Yup, reanimating the whole thing at the moment, going to look 100% better, better characters, better animation, better textures. And could be on DVD :P

  • @colonelbarker Great! Dvd quality, this is really brilliant, and I congratulate you!

  • One flaw I've seen is the Cyber-smoker. In the still used in the slideshow on the video they put it under the door.

  • @CplHound Hi there- thanks for letting me know. In the existing telesnap you see the Cybermen kneeling down, IIRC I tried to match is as closely as I could at the time. However due to limitations in the models they couldn't bend too far without distorting. Glad you enjoyed :)

  • Unbelievable. Truly unbelievable. I want to obtain the first 3 episodes, get this animation and add it to it, make a case, and put it on disc for my collection! Make it blend in with the other eps by adding a small amount of grain in it :D LOVE THIS MAN U SHOULD B PAID BY THE BBC TO MAKE THIS FOR A DVD RELEASE U R A MASTER!

  • I've been saying the beeb should do this for years, it's nice to see that someone didn't just complain and actually did it well done mate. The beeb really should do it quickly whilst the people who worked on this are still alive, they'd be able to tell them exactly how things looked and that sort of thing. Stuff you can't get just from the scripts.

  • @Starman117 You really, really can. Those scripts are increabibly detailed compared to the memories of something people did 40 years ago.

And of course only really Anneka is alive out of this episode, and she can barely recall a thing about it!

  • @colonelbarker Yeah from what you've done I can tell but there are but there are one or two little things they forget to put in here and there eg the cyber gun. The tenth planet is possibly a bad example for still living actors but there are some Troughton ones that still have a lot of people knocking around from. The Susan actress is quite young as well.

  • @Starman117 Well, she is 70. The trouble with her being is she only really has 9 episodes missing, and there are over 700 photos that exist for Marco Polo already, it's the most documented story in the 60's. And she isn't even in one of the missing episodes of the Reign fo Terror...

I mean, it's entirley possible the gun was dropped at some point during the actual programme or was taken by a Cyberman. I will pay more attention to it in the future animations.

  • @colonelbarker No I meant the bit where the gun appears out of nowhere in the radiation room. Still it;s a small quibble considering what you've done here. Yeah your probably right but i feel if they're going to do it having a few cast and crew might be a plus.

  • @burdlow Yup, before he did the Daleks!

  • this is absolutly amazing, really well done and well exicuted, thanks for uploading it!

  • Thank you very much for posting this! It's really nice to see the end to this one.

  • Although the computer animation could be drastically improved, I feel this was a huge undertaking for you and have done well considering the work load.

Also, thank you for uploading it for all of us to enjoy as well. Most appreciated!

  • @SamusDrake Chees. Yes it has come a long way, personally for me, this is basically the first major project I worked on, and was an insane undertaking, as much as I hate watching it now, it's nice to see people still enjoying it!

  • William Hartnell is not here any more nooooooooooo

  • Great stuff; I love the way you have the images move like a studio camera would have done. Only one quibble...your Polly is considerably less attractive than Anneke Wills! Other than that, wonderful!

  • have you thought about doing the other lost episodes of Doctor Who? i'm sure you will do a great job.

  • I have, they take years to produce working in a small team, so keep watching!

  • Reminds me of Dreamland. And considering that was a comissioned BBC show and this is a student project, its excellent.

  • I am not sure if I should take that as a complement. But Dreamland is quite a nice standard to hit!

  • This is outstanding - well done! must have taken enormous amounts of effort - much appreciated - along with the BBC animated reconstructions this is an invaluable contribution!

  • Admirable my boy truly admirable

  • Why thank you!

  • It's nothing special??? This is absolutely fantastic! Thank you thank you

  • Oh, cheers. Wait until the new version comes out. :)

  • What makes this better then other animations is the sets are right, they are standing in the right places. Their movement's seem to go with the sound, they look at the right person they are talking to. They seem to be doing what the sounds indicate. Very well done.

  • really good indeed.

  • That was brilliant! The BBC should hire you to redo this episode with a better cgi programme!

  • Better than Maya? They use this to do the effects on Dr Who on TV.

  • Really? I didn't know. Oh well, I stand by my comment. The BBC should hire you to restore the lost stories.

  • Just agreeing with others....this IS "special". Nice work. I wish I had seen this before I watched the "unspecial" one that just had sound and mostly still images.

  • Cheers, glad you liked it. Honestly I still like to have the telesnap reconstructions as they are as close to the original pictures as you will get. But this kind of material help plugs the gaps.

  • I don't miss them much as all. As long as they are on youtube I'm fine.

I probable like yours and the whosprites the best. I'd love to have all the missing episodes done like what you've done here. How's you like it if the BBC bankrolled this for you?

Btw, I like the Cybermen in 10th Planet better than the ones that came later. I just finished the awesome Tomb of the Cybermen and didn't like those guys as well. Their voices are spookier here.

  • You did a great job capturing the atmosphere, style of directing and camera shots of the old series. Excellent!!

  • I disagree with your assessment of your own work. I think this is very special, brillianat in fact, must have taken a hell of a long time to put together.

  • Oh, cheers. It was about 5 months from beginning to end. Honestly I know it could be about 20 times better today and I could do it in about half the amount of time.

Strangely enough I just don't have the time these days!

    Aaron

  • What software did you use for this? I like the Cybermen talking effect, as this was how they did it in the episodes concerned. As with the other commentators I think the animation is far superior to the stuff churned out by C&H. I agree with what you said above about how difficult it is to cut from existing footage to 3d animated. I had a similar problem recently involving Dalek battle footage at the end of Evil. I did incorporate some of it into my recon, in the end, and it seems to work ok.

  • The project was all done in Maya 7, with effects done in After Effects 6, and edited in Premiere Pro. I am glad you enjoyed it.

I t tried to match the Cybermen mouths as much as I could with the originals, it was quite hard to make them 'out of synch'

    Cheers,

    Aaron

  • I thought the Cybermen just opened their mouths while the voices came out. :)

  • It really depended on the actor, sometimes they would open and close them with every phrase, other times they would mouth the words.

  • Yes, but having the mouths opened totally as they talked was pretty neat, and with their way of speaking, it was like a computer was trying to work a long dead larnyx, which add to creepy factor. :)

  • Yup, very creepy indeedy. The main reason I put a bit more motion into some shots was simply to give a little more life to otherwise what are fairly static shots.

  • Thank you so much. I really enjoyed seeing it. You seem to have a talent for animation.

  • Cheers, it's not so much a talent, as months of solid work day in, day out. But I am glad you enjoyed it!

  • This is simply fantastic! The best thing any Who fan - who regrets not seeing the historic Part 4 - can do, is view this. I hope you've contacted the BBC.. this could be provided as an extra on a future Tenth Planet DVD. This excellent work also shows there is hope for the future for Who fans who want to see all the lost 60s episodes... This technology means one day we will see "the real", rebuilt, missing episodes... The possibilities are truly something to look forward to in the future...

  • Thanks for the Kind words, yes I did indeed contact them. Honestly they weren't interessted- so that's why I put the video up here for everyone else to enjoy for free.

The technology should improve quite a lot over the next few years, and will be interesting to see what can be done in the future!

    Cheers,

    Aaron

  • very good

  • Great, I enjoyed this.

  • Cheers. Thanks for the comment.

  • whats the click-click-click sound inside the radiation room?

  • I am not sure, radiation counter?

  • great job wish you could more excellent!!!! i have watched it twice just brilliant.

  • Cheers. Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully there will be more in the future!

  • You got the Patrick Troughton likeness very well.

  • Thanks, to tell you the truth he is a 3D model that only works from that single angle, it's more like a clay sculpture.

  • I am impressed! For a student piece this is quite a masterpiece!

  • its a real shame cosgrove hall aren't animating any more episodes, maybe the BBC could comission you for any lost serials. Here's looking forward to the Macra Terror!

  • Very nice. The models could use some work but it's definitely more... animated and camera movement filled than most attempts at this sort of thing. Heading to the Who 3D forum now. It's been awhile.

  • It isnt the same with just audio, I need visuals.

Thank you so much for this. After finding this I finally sat down and watched the story in it's entirety. A damn good story it is too, the Cybermen have never been this good.

  • Cheers, glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully this wont be the last animation!

  • Just watched this again and I have to say that you do yourself a disservice with your self-criticism. This really is a brilliantly watchable recreation, despite your then inexperience. Alright, Polly isn't the prettiest she's ever been and it may not be broadcast quality but there are moments where I could be watching the real thing. The camera work in particular is excellent and well observed for the time. As far as I'm concerned there are only really 105 missing episodes. Well done!

  • Cheers, I am glad you enjoyed it. Honestly, I was happy at the time, but having moved so far on in such a short amount of time since that animation I feel it could be so much better. I paid a lot of attention to the camera positions and movements, I am glad that paid off.

    Cheers,

    Aaron

  • Excellent! Really enjoyed this. Thanks for posting it.

  • Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment.

  • Superb!

  • Cheers.

  • Ooooh, that gave me *chills* to watch. Thank you for sharing this!

Every time I've ever heard William Hartnell say, "it's FAR from being all over," I get goosebumps. Little did he know how right he was...

  • Cheers, I put a lot of work into that section, it really is one of Hartnells finest moments.

  • Great work. Thanks for sharing

  • Cheers- thanks for watching.

  • thanks cb

i think you are best at animation really brilliant

    10000000000/10

  • Cheers, glad you enjoyed it. I have a long way to go, and I am glad this school project is bringing so much joy.

  • Wow that was awesome! I've seen parts of the ending where The Doctor regenerates but not the rest of the episode! Well done indeed you should be proud of it. I especially like your animation of William Hartnell and the cybermen, as well as the background scenery! Top notch!

  • Cheers, a lot of people haven't been so kind recently. Stay tuned for more animation in the future!

  • To be fair... the BBC never actually destroyed "The Tenth Planet 4." The tape went missing and was never returned - they actually thought they found it in 1993 and announced a VHS release, but it turned out to be a mistake.

  • At last I feel I've finally got to see the final episode. Thank you, this is brilliant.

  • good tardis console.

  • Fabulous work. Nicely directed. 5/5

  • That is brilliant. One suggestion - maybe you could consider fading in the surviving footage.

If something like this was released on DVD with surviving episodes I would buy it in a second (as I did with Invasion)

  • I did try it, however with the cine footage (recorded off a TV screen) there was too much of a jump for it to work practically, and took you right out of the drama.

The only clips that could have worked would have been the opening recap and the closing regeneration last few shots, but really, I felt it took something away by cutting from real people to 3D people. But it's something I will strongly consider in a few other cases, such as the Power of the Daleks existing material.

    Thanks! A.

  • Or u can have the suriving regeration after the animated version for fun to show what it looked like or compare.

  • That was absolutely amazing. Def keep up the good work dude and keep trying to submit these animations of lost episodes to either the BBC or to the company that helped reconstruct "The Invasion". Job VERY WELL DONE!!!!

  • Don't worry, I will do, I will keep plugging away at it. Never ceasing. :D

  • One of those Cybermen has a big butt.

  • Well quite, they all have the same one to be honest ;D

  • Coool. Finally some old DW. God bless Hartnaell, Troughton, and Pertwee. Thank you.

  • The oldest and the best!!

  • try macra terror next this is so cool

  • Cheers, was planning on doing power next.. but I will consider it.

  • If you made this when you were a student you must be very very good now.Tell the beeb to get this done and also the two Ice Warrior episodes.

  • Haha- I like have any influence there!

But I am certainly much, much better!

    Cheers,

    Aaron

  • this is good enough to be put out on an official DVD release. i'm speechless!

  • That's not what they thought, but glad you like it. :)

  • then tell them from me they suck and have no life

  • A wonderful effort, fits in with the audio soundtrack perfectly well done!!

  • While the characters themselves look crude, it's the most watchable of all the fanimations I've seen - and it's a complete episode! A great achievement. I'll check out more recent work.

  • Cheers. The simple characters was really part of the design, to see how simple I could make them, and how much detail I could put into the textures.

On of the problems with relying on the textures, is 90% of the time with this kind of material decent photographs simply don't exist, and textures from telesnaps are, as you can see rubbish.

    Cheers,

    Aaron

  • That's the best attempt at this episode I've seen so far. Sure there's still work to do, but hey - well done for having a go and sharing.

  • Excactly my thoughts... it's on it's way. But hey - from here things can only get better!

  • FABULOUS! LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT! SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE PHOTO RECONSTRUCTION! I love the way you used your own imagination a bit. After all, who's going to care, you can't see the original? Love the fact you kept it in black and white. Kept the original feel just right! What software did you use? VERY WELL DONE! I'M SO SUBSCRIBING TO YOUR CHANNEL!

  • Glad you liked it. The characters were modeled in Maya 7.5, textured in photoshop 1.5, composited in After Effects 6.5, and finally edited in Premiere Pro 1.5. The Audio was cut together in Audition 1.5.

Fingers crossed they get better from here!

  • Regeneration looked fantastic. Try the BBC again or try the studio that made the Invasion episodes and they could help you try and get this on a DVD realease with the BBC as the Tenth Planet is currently the most wanted DR Who DVD!

  • Love It. The REGENERATION was BRILL! the angles of the end was a bit wrong. Fair play doing all of this I would give it 10/10.

  • Glad you enjoyed, I did bring screen grabs into the animation software for the existing software to try to match is as closely as could be done.

    Glad you enjoyed!

    Cheers.

  • Cheers- not so much talent - as hard work!!

    Cheers

  • Beautiful... , This is simply fantastic even the camara angles are right , BBC ! HIRE HIM

  • Cheers man. The characters and animation are horrible really, but I do love the camera angles, a lot of people seem to like them!

    Colonel Barker

  • this is amazing! all the character have great likeness to there tv counterparts, especially the cybermen and the second doctor. it is so proffessional! i really cannot wait for power of the daleks! is there anyone who has fully reconstucted and episode using animation yet,i'd like to be the first!

  • Um.... I was the second person to animate an episode, a guy called Niel did Marco Polo Ep1 in 2002/3 in 2D, but I did the first ever 3D animated episode.

The BBC's version of Invasion came next.

Power is on it's way, but will take another year or two.

    Cheer

    Aaron

  • Hey there,

Yes it was made in colour, the problem is, all the sets are silver and white, as are the Cyberman (bar their arms) but the humans all have human heads and skin, Polly has a red dress, Cutler a Green shirt, Ben a beige shirt, but that's actually all the colour there is in the whole production. It's honestly not worth it at all.

  • Did you make this in colour? Because it would be really cool if you could put a colour version up.
