When rugby is pretty much a way of life here, seeing a packed stadium clad in white was one of the best things I've ever witnessed. Phoenix making playoffs + AWs making the WC = Football Revival in NZ. If as much time, money and resources that are given to rugby were put into developing football in this country, we'd be not half bad. At least in the top 50 in the world.
@jpizzle12345 The same thing has happened here in the US, they finally started putting in the time and resources like 20 yrs ago and now our team is able to compete with top sides in the world. The only thing keeping it from advancing further is that most of the top athletes over here choose to play the other sports as they're growing up and they end up in the NFL, NBA, etc. I don't think thats ever going to change either unfortunately but we still have talented guys on the team

Only now that they qualified for the World Cup has "soccer" even started to get recognition in NZ. I went to the game in the Rose Bowl too and it was 0-0 at the half. They only went on to lose 0-2 after Chicharito and Vela scored world class goals.

@mexicofolife1 If Mexico had ran out that B team that they've been using to play all their warmup games since then (Bofo, etc.), NZ would have at least drawn, probably won. NZ is still minnow status right now because they don't usually get to play higher level opponents like Mexico being that they're in the Oceania division. In fact Mexico was their only warm up game until they play Australia on the 24th, then they have a few more right before the WC starts. Anyways, good luck in the World Cup.

I thought Mexico was gonna go far this time but they had some bad luck in that game against Argentina, don't know what Osorio was thinking on that 2nd goal. NZ has two home friendlies October 9 & 12 against Honduras and Paraguay, I was kind of hoping Mexico would come out for a rematch :)

Don't play much in NZ, you're kidding right! Its the biggest Junior sport in the country. Bigger than Rugby and Netball. NZ has been in both Womens and Mens Under 17 and 20 World Cups. While we might have an easier qualification road than the Europe teams, its hardly "Easy"

You miss the point of the World Cup. It's not about the best 32 teams in the world, it's about the best teams from each continent.
You can argue whether that's right or wrong, but I would be really bored if the entire competition was just European teams, a few South American teams and a couple more from Asia or Africa or the Americas.
The WC has given us epic moments which wouldn't have happened without these 'lesser' teams, and it wouldn't be as (cheese) magical.
How many famous upsets have there been.. One of the great things about football is any team can win on the day.. While I agree, we probably won't make the second round, and might not even get a point. Its still a great thing to be there. As others said, better that it is a world game, rather than all the teams coming from one place.

If someone lives in a country for long enough, or has distant relatives from that country, then they are eligible to play. In 1982, how may of the NZ team were born in England? Over half. In 1982 NZ played the most games, scored the most goals and travelled the most miles to qualify for the World Cup. Maybe we did have it a bit easier this time. We don't make the rules, we just play by them.

Don't play much in NZ, you're kidding right! Its the biggest Junior sport in the country. Bigger than Rugby and Netball. NZ has been in both Womens and Mens Under 17 and 20 World Cups. While we might have an easier qualification road than the Europe teams, its hardly "Easy"

You miss the point of the World Cup. It's not about the best 32 teams in the world, it's about the best teams from each continent.
You can argue whether that's right or wrong, but I would be really bored if the entire competition was just European teams, a few South American teams and a couple more from Asia or Africa or the Americas.
The WC has given us epic moments which wouldn't have happened without these 'lesser' teams, and it wouldn't be as (cheese) magical.

How many famous upsets have there been.. One of the great things about football is any team can win on the day.. While I agree, we probably won't make the second round, and might not even get a point. Its still a great thing to be there. As others said, better that it is a world game, rather than all the teams coming from one place.
