The "magical" view of the police sort of left me when I saw a deputy sheriff in uniform lie at a trial. This could have put away an innocent man for years. Luckily, he was a cop, and accordingly not bright, so the lie got uncovered. I was twelve years old when I saw this. It was one hell of a civics lesson.
