This was definitely a Southern California favorite, at the time. It clearly had a Beach Boys aura about it. And it was very well done, with that patented optimism for that era. Will it ever return?
What ever happened to to Gary Lewis ex-wife Sara Jane "Jinky" Suzara Lewis and their daughter Sara Jane ? They were married in 1967 and got divorced in 1971, I believe ? Jinky is from Manila, Philippines. Any news about them ?
What ever happened to to Gary Lewis ex-wife Sara Jane "Jinky" Suzara Lewis and their daughter Sara Jane ? They were married in 1967 and got divorced in 1971, I believe ?
in several photos of this group, i see a band member with an accordion. but i don't remember hearing the sound of an accordion on any of their songs. did they just use accordion in their live gigs?
blueticecho Yup, Gary did his year, honorably asking for no special treatment. Jerry didn't want him to go and suggested he go to Canada or wear a dress. Very few children on the famous serve now, though. The fact that Lewis served makes me respect him and like his music even more. Of course, its very good.
This song rocks then and it still rocks today! What an awesome song! And to think I married that girl! Everytime I hear this song I just look at my ole sweetheart I married from High School. And I give her a big smile when this Plays.Baby I love you from the first time I saw you till Now as long as we been married this flame will not die.
How has America managed to degenerate itself from this kind culture where music was fun and positive to the low class crap we have today in just over a short 4 decades? Im only 27, so there are a few of us in my ignorant generation who sees the light...
whatever happened to that filipina wife of his named Jinky Zusara? are they still together...remember he had a concert in the philippines and fell in love...he came back there to the objection of his dad Jerry Lewis???
This song puts me back on the strip in Daytona Beach, late eighties. I was about ten then and grew up with this era music. What a time. And here's to the old Ormond Hotel, no longer but not forgotten.
Nice write up. You are spot on with "beautiful AM pop." The hooks and arrangements were in the pocket for the demographics it was intended. Thanks for the studio insight as its important to know who helped create this sound.
.....this song is essentially an example of having the means to cop essentially the exact same backing vocals and instrumentals as classic BB songs, and putting a guy whose Daddy got him some pull in the record industry to sing lead vocals.....maybe a little better than pops, and thats it...that being said, this is right up there with the Beach Boys, if you took the lead vocal and replaced it with any BB lead vocalists, leaving everything else the same
I don't have the history with this song like most of you, but my dad always played Gary Lewis on the record player for me in the 1980's so I grew up with it. So for me it's very very special and takes me right back to an innocent and good time growing up. Not only Gary Lewis but so many great artists and bands from 15-20 years before my time. So very thankful I grew up with good music and hopefully I'll be passing it on to my kids in future.
GREAT SONG! The fact they "dress up" to do a show has my vote. Wish performers today could take a hint and not dress like something they have slept on over night
I agree. Life never did get any better than the easy, casual 60's days when groups like Gary Lewis & Playboys were in the top 40. My high school graduation night was drenched in tears from most of the class. These days, I play these videos to my two children so they can hear what QUALITY MUSIC sounds like even though there are a few artists today who also know. THANKS GARY. Peace & Love to All in 2010 and beyond.
I was about 5 or 6 when this song and the "Everybody Loves A Clown" album came out. Their songs are part of my childhood in Greensboro, NC. Thank you for posting!
averillhecht, I was wrong, It was golden greats, not greatest hits. But you are right. they made great songs, and great memories. I did see them in 1990 in Houston at the Lovin Fealins concert. They were good.
Blaring on the beach at Lake Michigan in Southwestern Michigan listening to WLS from across the lake, on a hot July day. I can feel the sand and smell the lake and Coppertone now.
I bought the greatest hits LP inm 1978 on the Liberty lable re- issue, this was the 3rd song on side 1. I lost all my LPs in a fire in1989 when my ex brother in law set my shed on fire. I miss those LPs.
@MrMotownmanny I still have that exact LP. Bought it about the same time. You are right-I don't think Gary and the Playboys new how to make a bad song. Great memeries from when I was a kid!
Wow, does this slam me right back! SoCal Beach parties with this playing on the radio. Be'in cool... laid back. Dancing on the beach with/without a partner! EVERY summer night! KNOWING it was never going to get any better than that!!! And... it never did!!!
As a young boy growing up in small town Britsh Columbia Canada. In the 1960's I remember my sister bringing home this album ...I still listen to the song today. I bought their Greatest hits CD
The version I heard was, when Gary came back from the Nam, the music scene had completely changed in the two years he had been in. That, and his experiences over there made in him a non- competitor. Sad really, since I believe he had 4 #1 hit records in 1965.
Why they never stood the test of time and keep making more music into the 1970's charts is amazing. This group is too underated and forgotten. Oh, and Gary's Dad is one of the greatest comedians in history. For some reason they could not regain their glory after Gary came out of the Army. Such a clean and happy style and they did have style. Nothing political or controversial about them as well, very classy.
@jim102353 his dad being the greatest comedian ever is highly debatable. I personally didnt find him very funny. I liked him best in the family jewels as the detective playing pool. I lol at that scene everytime but most other movies he sucked quite frankly.
@jim102353 the 60's evolved at such a rapid rate if you werent cutting edge and didnt write your own stuff you just didnt last for the next week let alone the next decade. These guys werernt cutting edge simple fact. this is a good song - early beach boys - but hardly anything that would make lennon, mcCartney jagger, richards, brian wilson worry.
@jim102353 Funny thing what a little Draft will do to your band! I don't think Gary was the only one who ended up having to go into the service. Yeah, these guys were at the pinicle of success in the late 60s when Vietnam came calling. By the time they got back, the world had changed and the happy-go-lucky sound of the mid to late sixties was over, suplanted by the heavy metal rock of the 70s.
@jim102353 The story I heard was that Gary got drafted in 1966 and did two years in Vietnam. By the time he came home the music scene had changed. He had five Number One Hit Records in 65, for a brief time at least he was on the cutting-edge of popular music.
this is abefore my time..it's more my older sisters stuff and she used to listen to this kind of stuff alot...but for what it is, great pop music, its' real good..
A GREAT SOUND here! This tune brings a lot of great memories back , just listening to this one. Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.... these guys were the soundtrack of my youth. A good time!...
