JOKER plays games with peoples minds. he makes people do things.
CHIGURH doesn't care about what people do. he just kills.
JOKER's motive is success of his games. his interest is not in killing people. he kills only when the success of his games are at risk. the emotions he displays is critical for his games.
CHIGURH is not interested in playing games. he just kills and get over with his job.
both are realistic for their characters. both are different.
@HitToWin40 youre an idiot, anything above 4 psi will penetrate human skin, and can leave an air bubble in the bloodstream which will cause a hemmorhage
Javier Bardem is like a young Robert de Niro in that he is an actor who ENTIRELY changes physically to fit the part. Here, as the embodiment of evil and darkness, he is utterly frightening and convincing. In "Mar Adentro", or "The Sea Below" he gives and equal tour de force performance. My new favorite and most talented actor of our time, IMHO but being from Spain, may not get his due recognition here.
This is a diplomatic, simple, polite transaction.....see, folks, manners do get you ahead...or, in this case, a head. "What is that for?" "Could you hold still, please."
Pshhshhh! Brilliant. Might try this on my neighbour.
Chigurh is not really the villain of this piece, he's a force of nature unleashed by those who knew better and did it anyway. The real villains are the people that hired him, that abetted him, and that allowed the cycle of escalation to continue to the point that it did.
Scary villain, but the idea of somebody hauling around a big, heavy tank of air with him everywhere so he can use a weapon that requires him to be within a couple of feet of his victim is pretty stupid.
For u guys discussing over Anton and Joker, they are different, VERY, very different, Anton killed by contract, something similar to Agent 47, and Joker just wanted to fuck up gotham city and put an end to batman, that guy Joker tied victims, he played with their mind, making them have a more fearful than painful death, Anton was just all about being sure u meet ur Maker as soon as u see him.
how can you even try to compare or discus which character is better. both, the joker and chigurh are pretty different characters. And writing "i'd be more afraid of chigurh if i met him in RL that's why hes acting better" is just nonsense. the joker is a comic-character and heath ledger is a fucking legend for how he acted in the dark knight. nonetheless javier bardem is a genius as well. both fuckin deserved the oscar the were given.
when you're a psycho like this your emotions are gone all you want is to kill and as an emotionless psycho you would think of many ways not to get caught or how to do approach certain people and learn how to manipulate emotions since even if they do not feel it they know it. they would seem to be smarter but it's just that instead of getting motivated by emotion that may lead to a mess they use thoughts and knowledge
"Whatcha got ain't nothin' new. This country's hard on people. You can't stop what's comin', it ain't all waitin' on you; that's vanity." Anton Sugar, you're a badass. I knowed you was crazy when I saw you sittin' there. FUCK the Joker, he's a cliche "Favorite Villain" that everyone idolizes for no reason.
For all you people arguing over Joker vs Anton Chigurh, there's one guy you all are forgetting. Possibly the most sadistic, fucked up insane killer ever, Hannibal Lecter.
@mx0506 It's a captive bolt pistol. It doesn't actually "fire" anything, as far as projectiles go. Basically, the tank holds compressed air and the part he held to the man's head fires a piston with incredible force, shattering his skull. It's kind of an unorthodox weapon. Those devices are usually used in slaughterhouses to knock out/stun cattle before they actually kill it by bleeding it to death. Fairly gruesome, I know.
@SwampAshHSS I think when you talk about slaughter house's many people just as much would choose to not know what it is. If I was shown that tool and never saw this movie I also probably wouldn't know until I saw it in action.
I'm sorry, the Joker has nothing on this guy. This guy is personal. If someone like Anton came to your party, I'm sure the music would shut itself off.
The Joker is more into big things, while Anton is into subtlety, unless shit hits the fan, like it did in the Motel scene.
I enjoyed both characters, though. This guy scares me more than the Joker. Scariest guy with a Bowl-Haircut ever!
I don't want to be a prick, but neither of them display any symptoms of psychosis. The word you're looking for is "psychopathic". Big difference. Major indicators of psychosis are breaks from reality and an inability to distinguish reality from fiction. Psychopathy is a lack of empathy and an emotional poverty.
@swyggi actually, anton isn't nearly the criminal the joker is for a simple reason: he doesn't believe he is doing wrong. notice his choice of weapon: a cattle gun. not even meant to be a weapon, it's meant to numb cattle before their throats are slit. in essence, chigurh does not believe he is doing evil, he believes he is euthanizing those who are oblivious to the real-goings on in the world.
In the book the air gun ran through is sleeve, and he killed this guy by putting his hand on his forehead like a faith-healer and then the gun shot. chigure is more baddass in the book then th movie. ps he also killed the cop at the start differently to, but only a little. this movie is hella good....friendo.
IMO it would be a close one buuuuuuut... Probably Joker...
Both insane, both badass, and both intelligent. But Joker would find a way. "So Anton... Do you wana know how I got these scars? No? Eh screw it ill use your air gun!" *shewp* *Anton slides to the floor* "Why so serious?"
@ItachiKenobi Anton shows no human emotion or care for anything. Which shows a true sociopath. Grunts and weirdo faces isn't really pyscho, although I did think Heath Ledger was entertaining, Javier was a lot more realistic.
@AkatsukiDad A smile is an expression subconciously used when a happy emotion hits you. The fact that he's smiling shows how much he doesn't care for the other man's life.
@AkatsukiDad He's smiling to portray a happy normal person. Sociopaths pretend to be normal, notice how awkward his face is when he smiles, it's obviously forced.
He's absolutely right. Psychopaths are more or less incapable of normal human emotion beyond a few very basic forms, such as anger or envy. However, because of that, they are very, very good at faking emotions--they learn to basically emulate normal emotion, and can easily look like they're happy or sad, when they want to.
@n0oneimportant Hmm, tell me, how do you see a fake emotion and a real one? There are no differences between them. You can't tell if its a fake emotion or a real one, even if he is a psychopath. It's like saying that blind guys can't write, even if some of them can.
The difference between the two is that the latter actually shows what the person is thinking, while the former is merely a tool for the psychopath to hide what he's really up to. Anton may be smiling, but, in reality, he isn't happy at all; it's just a trick to fool this guy into believing he has no intention of hurting him, which, of course, is wrong. In reality, Anton's more like a blind man who can't write, but scribbles on paper to make other blind people think he can.
no i mean like batman or any main characters worth mentioning.
also chigurh actually has interesting ways of doing stuff unlike the joker which is just ridiculous shit like sewing plastic explosive in someone or putting people in boats.
one of mah best friends... she once became obsessed with building animal traps and built a rabbit trap - and trapped a bunny in there. i got scared and let it out. she didn't get angry - just kind of stared at me and was like 'why'd you le it out?' i dont think shen was planning to do anything, maybe like, keep it as a pet. but she still freaked me out >_>

Psychopaths that kill are rarer though. You probably don't know one of them. :P
The Joker is seen as the representation of anarchy and chaos. He has no motive, no orders, and no desires but to cause havoc and "watch the world burn".
You can say his goals are whatever he feels like doing. However, even if he doesn't have any "principles" as you say he still isn't someone not to take seriously.
He showed many times in the film to be a very intelligent person despite his psychotic behavior. He even managed to seduce Gotham's "white knight" Harvey Dent to evil.
350 R2H is the license plate of Anton's car at the end of the movie and is the plates on the car he dives behind when he gets shot in the leg. Looks like 350 R2H is anton's unlucky plate!
The other gun, in the movie is a Remington 11-87. You can get a silencer for a shotgun, but the movie takes a dramatic approach and makes the silencer smaller, its about as big as one for a 9mm UZI, and a lot more effective. In real life, silencers require special loads of bullets to be more efficient.
Joe Pesci as Tommy DeVito, Javier Bercham as Anton Chigurgh, and most recently, Heath Ledger as the Joker. It's kind of funny how so many of the winners for Best Supporting Actor played unstable murderers, isn't it?
Don't forget Anthony Hopkins for Hannibal Lector. Angelina Jolie won best supporting actress for playing a sociopath. I think it's because psychopaths are always interesting characters.
