i remember when i stood that close when i was about 9 years old watching kenny bernstein warm up his top fueler at national trails in columbus, ohio and now im almost 30 and thankful for my grandfather letting me feel the burn that close just like that little fella ......now im a nitro junkie forever :-)
The ONLY way to describe it is ------the cars NEVER move an inch....the earth rotates underneath them------ My thoughts are also that there is NOTHING like the smell of Nitro and VHT first thing in the morning.....Folgers ain't got nuttin on the drag strip!!!
As soon as they grab the wing and you hear the pitch of the engine change there about to blip the throttle. I went to Englishtown this year with my fiance. I saw it, she did and they hit it she jumped. LOL just awesome
The first time I took my 9 yr old daughter to Houston and Doug Kalitta blipped the throttle of his fueler she ran and tried to crawl under a vedor booth. You simply cannot describe the feeling. I try to take a newb everytime I go just to see the reaction on their face. Priceless!
One really can't describe what that feels like to stand behind one of those fuel cars in the pits. I go the the drags on Chicago and Brainerd and the sights, sounds, smells, and above all vibrations are almost impossible to describe.
In '99, i took my 10yo boy to the drags, and we walked through the open space behind the TF car while it was running like this, and we couldnt breath and our eyes started running and we got out of there quick. That was the bitchin'est thing there. Nitro for Blood!!!
right on jenkins80 iam taking 2 of my buddies to indy for the mac tools us nationals they are both nascar fans so we are always pokin fun at eachother i cant wait to pop thier cheery when a top fuel car makes a pass, they dont understand that one cylnder on a top fuel dragster is equal to all 8 on a stock car, and they dont understand the power when tose top fuel and nitro cars lock on ha ha cant wait till he replaces that cheesy jeff gordon sticker on his truck for an nhra sticker... ha ha
go to memphis and houston every year and still can't get enough of that. speaking of nitro virgins, got my friend who has only been to nascar races to come to the drags in memphis and he feel in love with the sport. he goes to bristol every year and said that nothing compares to NHRA drag racing. he is now getting a r.v. spot for the memphis race. In saying that, yes nascar fans are most certainly in the dark. I'm tired of hearing "well its over in 4 seconds". They just don't get it.
Man I love the kids hat. I rember a few months back go up to indy and meeting john force. Its amazing how them guys are fan friendly. I also rember coming home with burns on my face from that Nitro. Crazy stuff but its AWESOME!!!
It went quiet halfway through because it was'nt bypassing so much fuel back to the tank. In other words it was very rich like when they light both bulbs on the tree. By the way it is still very loud.
That's the one year I missed @ Memphis lol that is a wonderful face on ur 8 year old, you should get him into Jr Dragster's he would LOVE them, I know I love mine =]
dude, you can't even run those engines with ordinary gasoline, they're like 8000 - 10000hp you can't even run much more than 1500hp with ordinary gasoline
Well.... You can run em at gas, as that is what happens when they shut it down during the warmup. If you look at the headers when the engine "flattens out" you see the extreme amount of fuel coming out. What they do there is "put it on the high side", or putting it on the high fuel pressure. This is, as mentioned, the system they leave the line with (the throttle response is not something you would get with gasoline). The low pressure system is to let the engine idle clean and make heat.
"the fumes irriate my throat" ... that is kinda sad. it burns like hell but COME ON! thats kinda the whole point ... im sorry but the smell of nitro on a saturday morning before eliminations is like ... heaven
Where else all you going to go and see hundreads of guys gathered around a nitro car warming up all crying they're eyes out from the Nitro, not able to breath because of the Nitro, throat burning because of the Nitro, and we all walk away loving it and wanting more. The best is when you have a Nitro virgin in the crowd and you watch their reaction to the Nitro and to the car.
8,000 horse power! This makes a NASCAR racer look like a go-cart. This video doesn't do justice to the powwer that you feel when these things throttle up.

NHRA is the greatest. But why did it get quiet halfway through, did they switch to gasoline instead of the NITRO, for the test warm up?
