  • I've just shared this out to about 8 places, good luck getting the message out & I'll keep doing my part. I've subscribed so keep me updated on new stuff to get out there. I support music & musicians with or without a label, often want to start my own label just to sign the great artists I find who are working their butts off & not getting the recognition they deserve.

  • @gmj2012 Thanks so much for the support and for spreading the word!

  • An amazing Video. Hope that this will be seen by millions, especially the co-musicians, the record label people, and the people that loves music!

  • @marshi09 Thanks! Spread the word and share this video on your social networks and with your friends. Peace!

  • @nataliemedia I will surely spread the words about this video... You explained and specified well the things about the said issue and I think it is the best and well explained statement about what really is happening to the music industry. God bless! and Peace be with you too! and one thing, I love your songs! and I think it's a way much better that some of the mainstream songs nowadays.

  • @marshi09 Thank you for the support and kind words!

  • thanks for taking the time to tell us this because i want to be an artist and i'm starting on youtube and i was just like confuse on what i should do.i mean i really wanna get signed and all but i didn't know which path i should take to get there. I was wondering if you could help me with a question i have.If your a youtube partner can you still get signed to a label?

  • @BeccaFaceLovesU Becca I would say that if you are quite young (between 10-17) and you don't mind having corporate people tell you who to be, what to wear, what songs to sing and how to sing them then by all means try for a label. Being on YouTube and/or being a partner has no impact on that in terms of being able to sign a contract. If you want a deal, do something outrageous, make a name for yourself, win a singing competition or get a high powered attorney to shop your demo.

  • Part 2 It takes a lot of luck to get a deal, and even more to actually get your album released. There are countless stories of people with all the 'goods' getting signed to a label, but their album never coming back. So really all of this comes down to are you passionate about music and do you want to make a career no matter what, or do you just want to try for a label. If you make your own career and you fit the criteria, you might get offered a deal... but if you want a career and...

  • Part 3 you begin to take steps to hone your craft, do your art, write songs, become a great artist... you can carve a career out for yourself and decide, if the opportunity ever comes, if you do or do not want to take that deal. But I would personally not recommend making getting a record deal your goal. It could be pointless and after all, if you love music and want to do it, just get out there and do it, regardless of deal or no deal.

  • WOWWWWWWWW!!!! GREAT VIDEO MANNNN THATS WAS UP YOU KILLLING IT.. CAN YOU CHECK MY PAGE OUT I RAP SING I WRITE MY OWN I CAN DANCE N DO ALOT MORE BUT CHECK ME OUT PLZZZZ .-GOD BLESS

  • @IncreaseYourBelief Thank you! I wish you the very best with your art. Keep it up!

  • PolyGram used to be big.

  • @Hal20062b Sure used to be. In the end it was sold to Seagram and merged into Universal Music Group and the imprint became defunct in 1999. A lot of things changed that year.

  • @nataliemedia I have another defunct label. It's called Zomba Recording Corporation, it went defunct around 2006.

  • @Hal20062b There are soooo many defunct labels... and more on the way...

  • nice song

  • @Dee9158 Thanks so much for taking the time to listen Dee!

  • This should have been happening a loooooong time ago. I think a lot of the major artists that are out now, would've been a lot happier...being their own boss...great...and also, might I add, you are a talented singer yourself. I would like to know if you are looking for songwriters as well...I would love to write from some of these artists independently speaking. sjackson4445@verizon.net.

  • @MsChainedLady Thanks so much for your thoughts on it and for the compliment. I write or co-write all my own stuff so I'm not looking for songs. There are tons of artists out there tho who do need songs. Try the local songwriting chapters or craigslist or google for Just Plain Folks... good luck!

  • good video- food for thought

  • @2enchant glad you found it thought provoking.

  • this video is fantastic! I've been following Laura Broad for ages and she's absolutely great :)

  • @falks941 Thanks for watching and spread the word. Laura is a beautiful soul and fabulous singer!

  • i love this video...im a indie r&b singer my name is J.Rashad had a single out called Trophy on my ine man show cd in 06 working on my new cd trying to network...look me up

  • @jy2dd All the best to you J!

  • The era of major record labels is coming to an end. Thom Yorke of Radiohead has predicted the end of the music "industry" as we know it. Not in a matter of years...but in a matter of months.

  • @CandlelightRevival It certainly is an interesting time in the music world, that's for certain! Thanks for your comment!

  • Rebecca Skyes new song - have a listen if you have the time

thanks - this song is dangerously catchy

  • @rebeccaskye I'll check it out Rebecca. All the best!

  • MALINA MOYE IS VERY TALENTED

  • @blackjacksonpollock Yes she really is!

  • Singer, reporter, commentator, encouraging, Nat, you're many women in only one. Amazing! I'm always finshing to listen your videos. And your support and help for independent artists is very nice. You're a real sponsor in the promotions of these artists. Congratulations, Nat, for your gesture. Actually, I believe you have points to gain from these actions. Congrat's, again! Bye! Eddie, your friend from the Southern Hemisphere.

  • @edyngtn2008 Thank u so much! I really try to entertain and educate... it's fun and lets people see other sides to things that they may not be aware of! Thanks for all the love!

  • Couldnt of said it better myself.

  • @Kwizdot Thank u! Spread the word :)

  • @nataliemedia No problem, And yeah will do! :)

  • Thank you Natalie for that information on the major record label.I think I'll put my singing on i-tunes one of these days.Great video and your singing & songwriting is Fantastic,5 *****..Marc Jones,..Los Angeles,U.S.A. (Vocalist)

  • @glennmach Ur welcome Marc... it's important to pass along lessons and knowledge and I always try to do this. Wishing you the very best!

  • You misspelled "Atlantic Records"

  • @Chicago10281 yup... it was such a bummer when I noticed that after I uploaded. Oh well...

  • I 2nd that Natalie......Indie rocks just as hard as the majors. Horns Up!

    ROCBOI (HOOD.METAL.R&B)

  • @rocboimusic We may in fact, rock harder!!!!!!!!! \m/ forever man! PEACE!

  • Hey Natalie, I love what you're doing. Keep up the great work! With the sweeping change impacting the record industry major label deals are not altogether good for music. I respect the fact you didn't plug yourself in the video but, I want to support you for your unselfish support of others. In the future, do away with the tyranny of the either/or and choose the AND! I'll be sure to keep in touch. We need more like you.

    Peace,

    BigShiid

  • @BigShiid Hey Rashiid, thanks so much for watching and for your comment. Please do sign up for my mailing list if u get a chance... got some big projects I'll be sharing with you all very soon and would love to have u be a part of it all. Keep on keepin on! Peace, Nat

  • Aye my boi! I got the hardest artist from Cali makin moves. Check him out search- T3 Stacc Currency

  • @Brokenbough6 Wishing u and your artist the best

  • Great video, Nat ! Great info also!

    Congrats!

  • @paulnery Thanks Paul! I appreciate you watching :)

  • Hope this Helps! Like you said, it's tough getting on a major record label! You gotta start somewhere! In fact, there have been some people on this network(YouTube)that have gotten signed to major record labels!

  • @Chicago10281 Thanks for watching! I'm not really interested in getting a Major Label deal. They don't have a great track record and I'm not the kind of artist that is right for them. But yeah, Justin Bieber has done well. Let's see how long his career is.

  • @nataliemedia And I am so glad you enjoyed my "karaoke" version of the original 1978 hit from the late Robert Palmer entitled "Every Kinda People" If I do another video, you'll be the first to know!

  • @Chicago10281 cool! def let me know.

  • @nataliemedia Maybe you could start your own record label or go independent

  • @Chicago10281 Hi Chicago! I already did both :) I have always been and independent artist. I've been co-running my label with my production partner since 2000.

  • @nataliemedia Did you know that Motown Records(yes, that Motown Records with the famous "map" label)was an independent record label when Berry Gordy founded it and owned it? Universal Music Group owns it now(UniversalMotown) Berry Gordy sold Motown Records to MCA in 1988

  • @Chicago10281 I sure did! All of the labels were 'Indie' when they first started... until corporatization of music started in the late 60's...

  • @nataliemedia And remember Ahmet Ertegun From Atlantic Records?

  • @Chicago10281 Yup, there were lots of great A&R people back in the early days!

  • This was really great, and informative for those who are unaware!

  • @SingerNCali Glad u enjoyed it! I'm glad it was informative. Pass it along to anyone you think would find it interesting. I also did a 2 part series on touring (from my perspective). Those are my last 2 vlogs. Just go to my channel and click the top playlist (nVlogs). Peace!

  • i seriously need to buy their stuff

  • @TameFan That would be so good of you. And spread the word about this video and the artists in it and other Indie artists you love. Thanks!!!

  • Most people do not realize how LITTLE money there is in most major deals. Much of the money from an initial "wide" release goes to the lawyers (DUH!), the studios and technicians, the PRODUCER, the promotions costs, tour costs, ASCAP/BMI fees, "free" cuts to major radio stations and promo outlets, etc. The ARTIST is usually at the bottom of the pile in a major deal. Oh, and an advance is not free money. It is usually structured as a loan, which you pay back from sales, if there are any...

  • @lnilsson1971 Yeah much of what you say is true, but a lot of this is difficult to explain to someone who simply wants to know why an artist doesn't have a major label deal. So if we concentrated on supporting good Independent music, then what happens in the major label system would be of less a concern to a lot more musicians. Thanks so much for posting ur thoughts! Peace, Nat

  • Well said, Natalie. Thank you! And you sound good by the way.

  • @Kalicoh Thank u so much! Really appreciate u watching/listening. I see u love Lauryn Hill. Really miss her contributions to music. Peace, Nat

  • I love independent artists

  • @mooogg YAY for Indies. TY for watching :)

  • ★ ♫ ★ ♫ ★ ♫ ★ ♫ ★

    For your wonderful job,

    Gaby ♥

  • @chihuo1 Thank u Gaby!!! Much love :)

  • @SonnyTheWhiteDwarf Sir Dwarf: so how does it compare to the videogame industry. That's pretty competitive turf from what I hear! Cheers :)

  • Hello Natalie,

As always, this is an excellent video. What you are doing for independent artists is wonderful and really what all indie should take the time doing: educating audience.

I always say that artists must change, not art.

Thank you for being the person you are!

  • @soulpoetrysite Thank u Cendrine for watching and for the comment. U know I appreciate you and support you also in your art! I think it's important to educate in whatever way we can. Thank you for being so kind always :)

  • .

Aw, I see what you mean that the artist may consider it 'pressure' to explain.

Maybe it's like explaining *anything* that laymen don't understand,

but I hope artists don't feel the need to *justify* their decision

even if it's a pain to explain their decision.

    .

P.S. Your long, thoughtful replies are impressive/amazing!

But please promise you won't go to law school.

    .

P.P.S. Happily, I found out that I saved on shipping when I got *both* your autographed CDs at the same time! #WordToTheWise.

  • @DoRayMeFa Thanks for your support! Glad you find the replies I am making thoughtful! I promise never to go to law school. I'll stick to makin music whooowheeeeeee

  • GREAT video Natalie. I shared it on my FB page.

  • @aprilsimsphotography Thank you so much April :)

  • Bottom line. It's creativity. Of the 13 million myspace bands you mentioned, maybe 25 have that magic to break through. You can't sound like Jay Z, or Britney or Guns N' Roses, Or Sting. You need to make music that was as fresh as THEIR first cds. Labels will find YOU if you are special. You don't find them. There is a reason most of those 13 million don't pay bills with downloads.

  • @yzfr1tony The reason most of those 13 million don't pay bills with downloads is that people who like their music compliment them on how they deserve to be signed to a major label instead of buying a CD/download. If enough people purchased music from these indie musicians, they indeed would be able to pay their bills from their music.

  • this is sooo true, u have my support Nat! great talent for sure. thanks for sharing

  • @Sherayx Thank you for the support, as always!

  • Again, it was your choice of words. Not your point. Your point is valid. And that is what the positive comments are for. And if people like the music, they will buy it. The last few years prove that. Home recording rivals the real studios, in the right hands. Social networking sites help. And when people download music, I am sure they don't check the record label. Or lack of one. If it's good, it's good.

  • Also, when someone asks why you aren't signed, take it as a compliment. Not a literal question. It's like asking a woman why she isn't a model? It's not ignorance to the long hours or sleazy photographers. It's a general statement as in "You look better than the women in magazines." Or "You are attractive enough to be in the magazines." No intro needed.

  • @yzfr1tony Thanks for your opinion on this. Read the earlier comments and responses I made to DoRayMeFa on this point.

  • No, it is not evil to make money from music. But this has a "50 cents a day can save a starving child in..." type vibe. Asking for someone's fast food money is what makes it tacky. It was your wording, not your actual point. The point is great. The editing of featured artists is great, and informative. But the fast food money quote, like an Earthquake Victim Benefit ad is what ruins it.

  • @yzfr1tony Thanks for ur comments. It's in the eye of the beholder I guess. It's interesting that u interpreted the video this way when most other people got the point. The point of the video was not 'give up your fast food money to support independent artists'. You seem to take that point literally while most others read it figuratively (as it was intended). The point was more to illustrate how inexpensive an album at iTunes is. In other words, it costs the same as a trip thru the drivethru.

  • LOVE it!!! Cool song & vocs! ;)

  • @chriscommissomusic Thanks so much!

  • P.S. I will check out those independent artists you mentioned ;)

  • @Chodidee I am sure u will enjoy what they are doing. Super people also :)

  • Great video Natalie! I do support! Your viewpoints/explanations are so good! I hope to re-post this in some form (you say it convincingly b/c. you live it). It's also good for indie artists just starting out, to know this info!

  • @Chodidee I'm really glad you understood and thank you for sharing the video wherever you can. It all helps to bring awareness! And you are right, I do live this, every day of my life!

  • This is awesome info and SO true. I will definitely spread the word about this video. And great plug for Lisa Lavie...one of the 13 Million worthy of world-wide attention but doing it HER way! Laura Broad, Meghan and Ahmire are amazing as well). And, last but NOT least, you rock the vocals oh-so-hard! Hope more people hear.

  • @jonmcsingee Thanks Jon! There are so many fab artists out there. I will feature more Indies in videos in the future. May even start a section on my Music Business 101 site to showcase starting in the fall. There is a strong contingent of artists who are 'doing it their way' these days. With distribution becoming more accessible, many boundaries are being torn down. Keep on pressing on and thanks for the comment :)

  • support Indie artists. Especially, this one bad. They were on a major label that immerged with another one. Biggest merger in music history. They were put on a rap label. They aren't rap. I'm talking about Hanson. They worked so hard to get their album:"Underneath" released. They sent in song after song. The label kept rejecting each one. Eventually, they had enough and went indie. They have their own indie company called:"3CG Records"(3 Car Garage).

  • @Light2guideyou Hanson had a good run on a major and have done extremely well since going Indie. Talented guys and really nice people. I'm glad you support them :)

  • @nataliemedia They sure did. It seems they are doing better since going Indie. I love them. I've been to wto of their concerts with my mom, went on one of their walks to fight poverty and Aids in Africa and got to meet all 3. They are such nice guys.

  • I support alot of indie artists. Major labels only care about a hit. Not about quailty music anymore. it's a shame. I left you a message about this. Youtube isn't letting me leave my comment. I hope this one sends.

  • @Light2guideyou We appreciate ur support. Major labels are in the business of hits, that's the way it is. It's how they sustain their business model. YT is glitching these days with comments I find. Sorry u had to keep on trying but that's for being persistent!

  • @nataliemedia My pleasure. I know they are a business. They annoy me though. I figured out why my comment wasn't posting. i went over the limit. Lol. I was bound and determined to get my comment to post.

  • @Light2guideyou Like Capitol Records and those other guys(The other major record labels)

  • what a fantastic message... this is really why i keep telling my friends about independent music. indie artists stay true to their music instead of getting overproduced by major labels.

i wish you all the luck in the world!

  • @zednotzee18 Thank u so much!

  • Let's hope that one day we may enjoy Natalie's Major Label.

  • @Vatsek LOL!

  • THANK YOU for sharing that info and clearing things up, Natalie! You're a great person, I really love what you do as an artist as well as in regard to educating fellow artists and potential audiences alike! Major, major work! Thanks!

  • @wnieke Thank you for appreciating what I am doing, it means a lot :)

  • @nataliemedia OK, I'm glad you feel that way - I know myself, how important appreciation becomes :-)

  • Natalie, very sound words. Also, for those who care to know, Indie artistes mainly do lasting music than what shove down our throats by major labels. I respect Indie artistes because what they sing is genuinely what they feel, think and approved of and not necessarily what label exec forces them to sing.

  • @Seetdeh Thanks for your thoughts Seetdeh! Hope you are well.

  • Be a doctor if it's about money. Be a musician if it's about the music. :)

  • @yzfr1tony 1. Thank you for taking the time out to respond with your thoughts. There are different types of musicians. Some are hobbyists and some are professional musicians. Hobbyists are OK earning a living by some other means and doing music for the love of it. Professionals do music for the love of it and have a desire to earn a living by doing that. Creating music is not a free enterprise (microphones, guitars, drums, ukuleles etc cost money).

  • @yzfr1tony 2. Instruments aren't handed out for free. Income that professionals earn from their music recycles back into creating more music, plus paying the rent/mortgage, insurance, car note, groceries, utilities etc., while they create their music. Of the professional musician group, some prefer to seek a company to pay for their time and space to create music, while others seek to generate income from doing the music itself to pay for their time and space to create music.

  • (uploader) 3. This is not a call to force every musician to wish to earn a living from doing their music. Hobbyists are more than free to have a 9-5 job pay for their time and space to create music. I'm not quite sure I understand why wishing to earn your living from your artistic creations is an evil thing. Why then don't we ask doctors to heal people for the love of it and make it not about the money? Doctors can heal for a fee, but creators must create for free?

  • Funny but I keep thinking that with your talent and a-cute ability to manage and promote yourself in such an impressive way Nat ( Brute honesty so sue me if you must;) you should be the chair of a major label. Just the same I focus on talent before major market manipulation. Carry on Nat you have what it takes to shine bright and light up the sky.

  • @RobRichmondRPG Thanks Rob for the kind words. I really don't think I'd want to chair a major label the way things are now. I appreciate your support in what I, and other indie artists are doing :)

  • .

    4.

I think they're saying the artists *deserve* the promotion and $uccess a label could bring, though I definitely think the average person underappreciates your main point that a record deal has got to be a two-way street.

  • @DoRayMeFa Most often, even tho the statement is made in a supportive way, it applies pressure to an artist to have to explain why they don't have the deal they *deserve*. If people supported Indie artists instead of wishing them major label success, then not only would the pressure be reduced but that entire group of musicians would be able to earn a living from their music and people would respect the decision of the artist to be independent.

  • .

    3.

I do think that the, uh, "stuff" coming out of the major labels is so "processed" and "packaged" for the least-common-denominator (read: airhead sensationalist) masses that it can't compare with the best independents on YouTube. So when commenters shriek "Why isn't this girl signed to a label???" I take it more as a exclamation of surprise, a compliment to the artist, rather than a probing "question." ...

  • @DoRayMeFa There will always be artists that fit the 'profile' for a partnership with Major labels (including processed and packaged acts). The question of "why aren't you signed" even tho meant as a compliment and exclamation of surprise, doesn't take into account that not all artists fit the major label profile or are even interested in a major label deal. I agree that most people mean the question as a compliment.

  • .

    2.

My conclusion may be contrary to your observation about the "large" number of independent artists in the world in general; I'm not sure. Maybe *other* independent artists are simply under-utilizing YouTube or aren't dedicated to the interaction with fans on which YouTube artists seem to flourish. Without a label to promote for the singer, she has to put in the hours promoting, herself.

  • @DoRayMeFa I agree that most artists perhaps don't have the time or interest in utilizing YouTube as a way to interact with fans.

  • .

    1.

One of the most articulate people on YouTube, and talented to boot!!!

    (but enough about me...)

    .

It's amazing, but I know of *each* of the artists you mentioned (makes me feel smart!). But seriously, that may mean that of YouTube's thousands+ of musicians, the really talented ones are fairly small in number--and they generally know each other and fairly often collaborate. Talent seems to run in packs, at least in this community.

    cont'd...

  • @DoRayMeFa Thanks Ray :) I think it's more musicians turning other musicians on to musicians they like that makes it appear like a pack or community. Word kind of gets around amongst each other.

  • WOW! Now that's hot Nat! I dig this one. Very well done.

  • @TruthUnderFire Thank ye....

  • man, wait til you learn about getting into the music industry! you gotta worry about soo much! its like being your own partial lawyer, accountant, artist(of course) and then some. I learned a little bit about it through my AP Music Theory teacher Regional Andrews in high school. It would be very stressful to have to deal with all that type of legal drama without proper knowledge of the music industry first. Look what happened to TLC (I think that's the women R&B group)

  • @1Mastermind1990 Thanks for your comment! Perhaps you missed the point of the video. The concept is basically support Independent artists because the chances of them getting signed are very slim. My comments are based on personal, first hand, real life knowledge about the music business and Major labels.

  • @nataliemedia my comment was learning about the industry once you get in, reinforcing your stand on support for independent artists by explaining all the hardship you would have to face. Pretty much stating that being an independent artist is way more beneficial for you and your music as an artist. In sum, I was merely making a point in that "being a celebrity" is not what it is all cracked up to be, the odds of fulfilling a satisfactory music (based on personal preference) would be slim.

  • @1Mastermind1990 Ah OK! Your second part here makes total sense :) And it's tru, being a celeb is not all what it is cracked up to be for many!

  • Hey Natalie! Thanks so much for this video and mentioning us. Yea, it's a crazy world out there with the major labels! We're good friends with Lisa Lavie too!

  • @ahmirTV Hey guys! It was such a pleasure to discover your music through Lisa and I enjoy what you do. I wish you all the very best on your journey and it was my pleasure to feature you!

  • this video are not about that at all so it makes it difficult for labels to classify us.

This business is about politics and who you know and not only about talent.

I think talent is only 25% of the equation. Crazy right??? :-/ Anyhow I loved this video and really cool song at the beg of this vid. I see that getting a placement in a movie!!! :) heheh Love ya girl. Thanks for the shout out. You're the bomb.

  • @lisalavie1 I wanted to take the angle of "quit asking artists why they don't have a Major label deal" and focus on how the odds from a Mathematical standpoint are against that in the first place because most people don't understand why an artist wouldn't want a deal from a Major. That argument I think we've all made to deaf ears (I'm sure you know what I am talking about!). Love u to girl and keep on keepin on!

  • Loved this video Natalie, Thanks for giving people a look in to what the business is like. There are wayyy more than 2,000 artists signed. All the other artists are artists that are stuck on the shelves that no one will probably eve hear of

(Which is so unfortunate) and the thing about labels is would we even want to sign to one at this point? I don't think most labels see the vision that we see for ourselves. Everything is about Sex'ing it up nowadays and the artists that you've profiled in...

  • @lisalavie1 Hey Lisa! yeah there are about 2-5K artists signed but only about 2K even get a push and less than that achieve commercial success, which is a shame! Lots are shelved, which is a crying shame! And you are right, some of us (me included) do not even want to be signed to a Major label. Major labels have to do certain things to satisfy quarterly numbers for shareholders and because of that, often times 'artistic vision' is thrown to the wind.

  • Thanks for putting this up especially as you picked at least 2 of my favourites, Laura & Lisa, the others were v talented too. Well done

  • @Avidlistner I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Peace :)

  • ^^^^^^^ AMEN! Ten Thumbs Up! I haven't heard a song snippet from your upcoming album that I didn't like.. so the new one "I LIKE IT" is most appropriate. <3

And your insight into major label deals is right on. It always bugged me when I'd see comments like that on artists pages .. "gee you're really good, why haven't you gotten a record deal?" or the like. Too many factors and good reasons why NOT to have a major label OWN you. Love and best wishes always.

  • @spikerztuber Thanks Jim for the positive feedback on the songs and I'm really glad you could relate to the info I presented regarding Major labels. The repeated conmment really does get annoying, especially when being Independent is a choice and you are making your way in the music world, you have credits and you are working hard each day to improve your art and make your way in the business side. Indies often don't get the respect they deserve. Thank u for reading!

  • Thank you so much for the shout out and support - I really appreciate it x Keep up the great work Natalie and thanks once again x

  • @blawah2000 U are very welcome Laura. Keep pressing on and sing with all your heart as you always do. Hugs, Nat
