I don't agree one devil face, and you jump ship this person is another artist paying homage to Brian Wilson. We're all flawed find a way to find the warmth in the sun like the song
I think what the person is trying to say is that Brian was suffering with really bad depression, He was in his own private hell. A place that anyone who has never had clinical depression would never know how it would feel. Your`ll find a lot of people who are very talented like Brian Wilson suffer from Bipolar. Its something so bad that it effects your whole being. Brians music was and is the best. I think he`s so awesome.
mike was rubbish, I am witness to mikes lifelong bullying and attention seeking behaviour from the start starting to listen to the beach boys in the 60's, he ruined brian, dennis and carl his name might as been murray..
I was 12 years old, in the 7th grade, in a So Cal Jr. High School when the Beach Boys came on to the scene.....right after Dick Dale, the Ventures, etc. I loved them...then and love who Brian Wilson evolved them in to.....bloody gorgeous!
It's a shame that "'Just Wasn't Made'" or any track(s) never became hits to any degree: "Melt Away," " Love and Mercy," or this one. VH1 hadn't yet moved away from its original mission, as far as I recall. Where were they when Brian needed them?
The author of the song, he feels it more than any of us. Our comments are for the most part, idiotic. I suggest until any of us can write stuff like this, just sit back and enjoy.
Do you have any idea who you're talking about??? If you do, then why not consider the fact that he's almost 70 years old and has been back from the dead about 5 times already... very far from "prime".
If you don't, then just know you shouldn't be talkin shit. Brian Wilson made vocal arrangements that have yet to be surpassed today, and based on pop music these days they never will be. Best falsetto of all time, the list goes on. Don't hate, the man is a legend!!
@bobshenix Why waste your time explaining the obvious to tin ears like @airwolfwwf. If you don't instantly and innately understand that Brian Wilson was one of the great musical geniuses of the 20th century then, well, then, I'm sad for you. I personally would love to have created even the weakest tune that B.W. ever wrote.
@dorkhunter1 BTW mike love contributed toward brians eventual breakdown after the Smile album due to mike love pissing over his music with his small minded lack of understanding of brians genius, wanting brian to stick to "the formula" instead of growing. its lucky mike wasnt involved with any other musical geniuses therefore limiting the damage to brian.brian was genuinely scared of the guy. BTW, music isnt about testicular fortitude. brian is a sensitive guy. mike is a sledgehammer.

God....takes you back in time, to a different place with different smells and colors. Reminds you of those you have lost.....and just what kind of gift god could give a man like Brian Wilson.
i saw a black and white documentary back in the 90's featuring this tune plus caroline no,i just was,nt made for these times, love and mercy and god only knows it was awesome! brian is quite rightly regarded as a genius,a little crazy but his dad was a tyrant by all accounts!his songs are poignant and beautiful .his dads strict parenting obviously spurred brian to be the great musician and arranger he became true genius!!
A collaboration with the reunited Beatles is one of my indulgent fantasies. Working title: "Pet Sounds in Pepperland from the depths of our Rubber Souls."
Correction: Mike Love has collaborated as a songwriter on many of their hits and plays a dab of sax(think he played it on "Come Go With Me"). OK, he's not up to the level of Brian, but he had the next biggest share in the creative process.
Brian's music from all these years never grows tired. If it wasn't for him the Beatles would never have reached such heights. I love the SMiLE Album of 2004 but how I wish we could have heard it in it's complete form in 1967. Brian is a genius who deserves to be placed on a mantle amongst the greatest song writers a musicians of all time. As Dennis said all those years back...Brian Wilson is The Beach Boys...we are just his messengers. Hail Brian Wilson!!!! THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!
The fact that a complete dog turd like you has to come on-line to display to the world how empty-headed you are just demonstrates the level of "pathetic" you have achievedn your life. And it's probably been that way ever since the cops chased you out of the bus depot men's room. I guess it just sucks to be you, having to hang out on youtube where all you can do is annoy folks & can't actually suck their dicks. By the way, dipshit: It''s spelled LOSER. Look in the mirror if you forget.
I just laugh when I read some dumbass comments like this. Dude, you don't know WHAT the fuck you're talking about. George Martin, John Lennon, Paul McCartney ALL acknowledged Brian as a genius. Against THOSE qualified pronouncements, guess just how dumb YOUR comments appear? Brian lost a number of years to drugs and mental issues, but when he came back, he was no less talented. Listen to his music asshole. And if you can still make the same comments, it just shows what an idiot you truly are.
You only have to go as far as George Martin who produced the Beatles to find out how great a talent Brian is considered in the business. Martin is so amazed that one person could write, arrange, sing, produce and mix records like Brian did while also touring. Especially when you consider they were putting out 3 albums a year at that time. He had to quit touring just like the Beatles to get enough time in the studio to record the music tracks as they became more complex.
Look at the facts - like the fact that Brian was able to dissect and master the harmony and songwriting styles of groups like the four freshman and Chuck Berry simply BY EAR from listening to the records, not to mention his ability to dominate a studio like Phil Spector. Look at Pet Sounds - Brian did the work, the REAL work. The other B.Boys just came home to a readymade masterpiece that only needed their vocals to be complete.
Basically what I'm saying is that Brian had all the vision and creativity. Mike Love may have been more assertive onstage (though he makes an ass of himself doing it) but he should've kept that shit to himself in all other areas. He didn't like Pet Sounds and practically shut down SMiLE single handedly, yet Pet Sounds is seen as a landmark recording now and it is clear, CLEAR (not just BW "robot" hype) that SMiLE would've been highly respected too, probably on par with Sgt. Pepper's if finished.
Mike Love on the other hand was happy to drive the band into the ground and turn it into a ridiculous caricature of itself - a touring jukebox "celebrating the old hits". Fucking puke.
Don't forget just how important and talented Dennis was as well. When I finally heard his solo album "Pacific Ocean Blue" {or something like that} I was amazed at the talent that he had. Plus he was the only Beach Boy that could actually surf. He is Carl are definitely missed in my book of the Beach Boys. Surf's Up Ya' All !
Brian Wilson was a genious! His music, his voice and his life just did'nt all fall together the way it should have or could have. I listened to these guys when i was just a kid in school, and they're still great!!!
@zebratangozebra - The Beach Boys were, in essence, the Wilson brothers. My favourite musical fantasy is that the asshole Mike Love was never part of the group, and Al (who contributed very little) also never came along. Think of this for a line up - Mike, Carl, Dennis, Glen Campbell on rhythm guitar, and Bruce Johnson on keyboards & vocals. A band made in Heaven.
@zebratangozebra Fairly good trolling. Hey, as a lifelong BB fan, I have my problems with Mike too, but you have to face facts: without Mike's commercial appeal at the outset, the group doesn't get off the ground and the Wilsons' talents may have languished in a basement, never to be known by the world. As for "can't sing" dude had a range from bass to dramatic tenor... that's known as "pipes". Is his voice as ethereal as Brian or Carl's? No. Good thing they made harmony and not solos...
@zebratangozebra And then had the balls to sue Brian years later, as if Brian didn't carry him from the beginning. I also dislike Mike Love very much. He is acts like a fool on stage to the point that I'm embarrassed and wasn't even there.
@zebratangozebra Mike can play sax. Mike also wrote the lyrics to this beautiful song. Sure he maybe an asshole, but I have to overlook that and focus on the redeeming qualities. As they say, "Mike Love Not War."
I was born in 1965. I simply love the music and the man's story. Mike tried to ruin that story, or at least interupt it, with his own agenda. It was The Wilson's band, always.
You are an absolutely horrible and vile person, no wonder you stalk people here who come for joy and memories. You must have neither of those with such a rotten attitude and mouth. You mother is probably very ashamed of you; you're probably one of those folks who like children or something aren't you?
You're so so wrong, about every thing you've said here. Not one of these things are true.
Until you have even managed to sing Mary Had a Little Lamb in key, your opinion means nothing to me, and even then, I think you're such a pig that I wouldn't listen. You are so offensive, I feel sorry for anyone who has to be around you or listen to you for any longer than 5 minutes in a lifetime. And, you have shitty taste!
Yes, you have an opinion and it sucks! Mike may have had a good song now and again, but he was never competition for Brian.
Brian heard this in his mind, developed instruments, that didn't exist, to match what he heard in his mind. He could sing and write better than 99.5% of any other human, alive or dead. Listen to this, it is classic Brian... soft and lovely. Mike barely had a voice, he couldn't play shit, and he danced around like an embarrassing fool for too many years.
I find your comments not only hurtful and cruel, but absolutely disrespectful and vile.
Personally, I think that Mike Love is a hack who rode on Brian, Carl, and even Al's coat tails while mucking about on the stage like a total fool and idiot, and that the Boys would have been better off without him in every way. But, until you made me this angry by totally rippin' on Brian I haven't said anything about Mike.
As far as when the song was written, I would begrudgingly believe Mike over Brian. Brian's mind has been through one too many defragulations over the years, for all he knows he is telling the truth even though the opposite might be true. Not that it matters anyway.
For the longest time the story stated that this song was written the night BEFORE Kennedy's assasination. This was according to Mike. I wonder if the origin has been morphed by Brian's mind and the legend around it.
I think it is many of the myths that have been repeated so many times over the decades that some memebers of the groups 'remember " it as true. It makes a good story. Maybe it IS true. I wasn't there, but the lyrics only imply the 'mood' certainly no actual reference to the JFK assination. For this version, obviously is singing in a lower key, and to me personally, the coda at the end is weak because the falsetto is too low. GREAT song either way. jhp
This world weary version is so affecting. I've always felt that "Warmth Of The Sun" was a close second to his masterpiece "God Only Knows." Beautifully done, Brian!
This song was a music landmark - it's been largely forgotten at least on radio play. Why don't 60's & 70's nites format remember to play a Beach Boy or later Brian Wilson ballad, now and then? Brian is/was a master composer and knew how to make fantastic harmonies layer over original and memorable melody lines. This song will move you if you've ever been told "good-bye" by someone who meant a lot to you. Does anyone remember the album "Pet Sounds"? Even the Beatles liked it. a lot.
@306344 Correct, 306344, but what is zebratangozebra above to make of the fact that Mike Love wrote the lyrics. This is in no way a defense of the prick who tried to sue Brian and Tony Asher saying he co-wrote many of the Pet Sounds tunes. He didn't. As Asher said in open court: "Mike Love's sole lyrical contribution to Pet sounds was a couple do-wahs and one diddy-diddy." Still, the man denigrated above did write the fabulous lyrics in Fun and Do It Again. Give credit where credit is due.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm glad Kennedy got killed. And Bobby. Cuz they fucked Marilyn Monroe over. And had her killed. There's no question about it. They did it for certain. Fuckin' phony devils.
wilson: You're 27 and you KNOW this??? You weren't even BORN YET, KID!!! You speak absolute IGNORANCE through those conspiracy novels you waste your time on!!! Look at all the thumbs down you've gotten over your stupid comment!!!! Think before you speak.....KID!!!
Brian and Don did a great job in sprucing up songs that were either barely in the radar or under it. The company should have also done a video for the remake of "Melt Away," a buried treasure.
Yes! Believe it or not! that is Brian Wilson singing. This is from one of his solo recordings from a few years ago. If you want, I can send you the name of the CD. i bet it took more than 30 takes to make him sound this decent. LOL! I still say the guy is a genius....
I grew up a 1/2 hour from the Wilsons. When they released Good Vibrations I was about 9. I still sit by the beach and listen to them sometimes. This dude was a genius.
This is a very touching rendition by the song's creator - what a brilliant composer of some of the most enduring music ever written. I love the Beach Boys rendition, Vince Gill's is superlative, and this recording really touches my heart.
Brian is a LEGEND!!! When people hurt so bad they shut down, his dad was ahole and sold his songs, then drugs depression, he is a frail soul. Glad he is back his new material is amazeing.
while this isn't as good as the original, I don't think anyone with a discerning ear would actually try to suggest that "50 cent" is, or in the case of Biggie Small(s) was, on the same level as what Brian was back in his prime.
This song is one of my all time favorites! It depicts what happenned to me and the woman that i fell so much in love with. now were nolonger but my loves like the warmth of the sun it will never die, and my dreams of her seem so real. I love you San
While Brian's voice needed to be streched out a little here it is the emotion in his voice and the way he conveys emotion through the chords he uses that makes him the genius that he is. I also would love to be able to determine just how much of the words are Love's I am guessing less than 50% this is pure Brian Wilson. Re Smile, smile is NOT an album Smile is a symphony writen in the same way that the great composers wrote music, each piece intertwining with the other.
Both Brian and Mike have stated publicly that Mike wrote the lyrics and Brian wrote the music. As you point out, in terms of Brian's contribution, it's one of his most inspired songs, a masterpiece of melodic and harmonic invention. And Mike's lyrics complement it perfectly. It's a great, great song.
TREW24 asked what we think of "Smile". Each time I hear "Smile" I don't just listen to it, I EXPERIENCE it. I hear something new every time. It is woven together seamlessly like a tapestry. One song flows effortlessly into the next. Pure genius--that's Brian Wilson!
The most beautiful to me was that one I favourited last week "Our Prayer", and through which I've found your channel as a related video and also can point out "Till I Die", "Forever", "Friends" and well...o disco todo, it makes people smile and cry at the same time. Priceless to hear their songs, ever!
Glorious.

As for "can't sing" dude had a range from bass to dramatic tenor... that's known as "pipes". Is his voice as ethereal as Brian or Carl's? No. Good thing they made harmony and not solos...
Lagaidh 11 months ago 2
@zebratangozebra And then had the balls to sue Brian years later, as if Brian didn't carry him from the beginning. I also dislike Mike Love very much. He is acts like a fool on stage to the point that I'm embarrassed and wasn't even there.
Eeohippus 8 months ago
@zebratangozebra he co-wrote this song, too, you know? his lyrics are beautiful.
predlycon 7 months ago
@zebratangozebra Mike can play sax. Mike also wrote the lyrics to this beautiful song. Sure he maybe an asshole, but I have to overlook that and focus on the redeeming qualities. As they say, "Mike Love Not War."
predlycon 6 months ago
I was born in 1965. I simply love the music and the man's story. Mike tried to ruin that story, or at least interupt it, with his own agenda. It was The Wilson's band, always.
You are an absolutely horrible and vile person, no wonder you stalk people here who come for joy and memories. You must have neither of those with such a rotten attitude and mouth. You mother is probably very ashamed of you; you're probably one of those folks who like children or something aren't you?
Eeohippus 2 years ago
You're so so wrong, about every thing you've said here. Not one of these things are true.
Until you have even managed to sing Mary Had a Little Lamb in key, your opinion means nothing to me, and even then, I think you're such a pig that I wouldn't listen. You are so offensive, I feel sorry for anyone who has to be around you or listen to you for any longer than 5 minutes in a lifetime. And, you have shitty taste!
Eeohippus 2 years ago
Continued...
Eeohippus 2 years ago 2
I find your comments not only hurtful and cruel, but absolutely disrespectful and vile.
Personally, I think that Mike Love is a hack who rode on Brian, Carl, and even Al's coat tails while mucking about on the stage like a total fool and idiot, and that the Boys would have been better off without him in every way. But, until you made me this angry by totally rippin' on Brian I haven't said anything about Mike.
Eeohippus 2 years ago 2
As far as when the song was written, I would begrudgingly believe Mike over Brian. Brian's mind has been through one too many defragulations over the years, for all he knows he is telling the truth even though the opposite might be true. Not that it matters anyway.
johnmusk 2 years ago
For the longest time the story stated that this song was written the night BEFORE Kennedy's assasination. This was according to Mike. I wonder if the origin has been morphed by Brian's mind and the legend around it.
fuzzalicioous 2 years ago

I'm glad Kennedy got killed. And Bobby. Cuz they fucked Marilyn Monroe over. And had her killed. There's no question about it. They did it for certain. Fuckin' phony devils.

Brian and Don did a great job in sprucing up songs that were either barely in the radar or under it. The company should have also done a video for the remake of "Melt Away," a buried treasure.

This is a very touching rendition by the song's creator - what a brilliant composer of some of the most enduring music ever written. I love the Beach Boys rendition, Vince Gill's is superlative, and this recording really touches my heart.

Perhaps someone has already said this, but he wrote this on the day Kennedy was shot. It put him in a melancholy mood.

while this isn't as good as the original, I don't think anyone with a discerning ear would actually try to suggest that "50 cent" is, or in the case of Biggie Small(s) was, on the same level as what Brian was back in his prime.
There are few who matched his ability.
Unless that was said in jest.

IainB1511 3 years ago
Both Brian and Mike have stated publicly that Mike wrote the lyrics and Brian wrote the music. As you point out, in terms of Brian's contribution, it's one of his most inspired songs, a masterpiece of melodic and harmonic invention. And Mike's lyrics complement it perfectly. It's a great, great song.
