It dates back to George III, when he signed a Parliament Act where the revenues of the estates of the British Royal Family would revert to the State, and the State would provide a fixed ammount of money for the Royal Family. Basically, the Queen costs 60 million pounds a year? The State gets more than 150 million pounds according to that Act.

@beardedswine I live in a Republic (Portugal), and I lived for about a year in a Constitutional Monarchy (Spain) - all I can tell you is that Republics stand for nothing, and in a sense of national values they are worthless, compared to Monarchies. I envy the British for having that Monarchy - it's only sad that people will only miss what they no longer have, when they have lost it.

Congrats to the 85th birthday of Queen Elizabeth!!! She is a remarkable and extremely dutiful all years ago. In all this years of her regency she was a secure factor for the british people and politics. Her regency continued since 1953 and she hasn´t make any mistakes in this time. The only one was to don´t react after the cruel dead of Lady Diana in 1997 for a few days.

At last I hope that not Charles will be her successor but rather Prince William and Kate. Best wishes to them from Germany
