@ReedSolomon lol, I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure his daughter would be ok with him not getting her the rose if she knew the price was either his death or her being sold to a beast. I mean really? Come on, it's just a rose not the holy grail!

@eswarvandanapu I think I know the one you mean, but I'm sure it's in PAL so it won't play on a US DVD or blu ray player unless it's a region free player, I wish there was some US copies made on DVD I mean legit ones, oh well thanks anyway.

This was before beauty and the beast, this was published by the grimm brothers in 1812. The Disney versions of their tales are just knock offs.

@rustydog440: But the Grimm version was itself a knock-off, because the original French fairy tale, Bella y el Bete (Beauty & the Beast) was created prior to Grimm writting their annonated version.

@fantichka88: He may have known of his failing health, bound determined to get Maria something as a momento. Knowing how she loved roses, he set out to get one, but all the florists were closed for the winter. Upon coming across the enchanted castle, he had hoped that the owner wouldn't mind if he plucked one small rose for his daughter, but the owner, The Beast, did mind, for his roses were his dearest treasure. So The Beast wanted Maria in the place of the rose the father had stolen from him.

In the orignal story, Beauty's sisters are nasty and ugly, but on this they are beautiful and nice.

@Floobegusted: Even here, they don't understand why Maria (Beauty) wants to go back to what they see as a monster. Sure, Maria was frightened at first too, but once she got to know The Beast, she grew fond of him. So when her father fell ill, she asked to leave. Heartbroken, The Beast let Maria leave, on the condition that she return to him, lest he die of a broken heart. As another variant said, if he were a man, he'd fight to live, but as animal, he can only wither & die if not cared for.

@Floobegusted Yes, she sort of looks like Sierra Boggess (aka Ariel in Little Mermaid and Christine in both Phantom of the Opera and Love Never Dies) Both have chestnut colored hair and green eyes....both are very beautiful too!
