  • I just watched original version The Abyss for the first time, then this. I'm really disappointed they cut the whole Alien subplot, the whole thing about the aliens just seemed so empty without it I feel. It's like okay what the hell were the aliens there for in the first place? If they were gonna help why didn't they just help from the beginning? And if they were supposedly all pure and angelic why'd they mess with the navy sub in the first place? The fact that they were mad explains a lot.

  • Me and husband were navy divers and commercial hard-hat divers for many years (retired now). We always loved the film, the Abyss, because of its technical realism and the realism of working divers so excellently portrayed by the cast. This is the first time I've watched the behind-scenes creation of the movie and it is pretty incredible. Thanks micosair for posting.

  • Wait...why did Mary Elizabeth walked off the scene?

  • @epsilon881 because they worked very hard scene and did well, but the camera at the end of the scene run out of the tapes

  • Thank you for this upload!

  • 9gag?

  • "fuck you i did the abyss" ROFL

  • There will never be another movie like it.

  • I think it was better with the cuts that were made. If the aliens were allowed to act as judges of humanity it would have totally changed to the tone of the picture. As the plot went in the original, the aliens are more angelic in nature, and thus the choir music is much more appropriate. A touching movie.

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was excellent in this, as well as in Robin Hood. Ed Harris also is an excellent leading man.

Lots of help from the villain Michael Behn, and the rest.

  • FUCK YOU I DID THE ABYSS

  • @SaberSense I know this comment is a couple months old, but the part that always gets me is after the resuscitation scene where Lindsey is recuperating and Bud is looking over her. She says (not so) jokingly, "Your turn next time." And the part that gets me is when Bud says "You got that right." There's something about the way he says that to his wife that make me tear up.

  • Avatar was a joke compare to The Abyss.

  • Let's make a film about the Gulf! And Oil just to piss e'm off!

  • Cameron is a perfectionist. Kubrick was a perfectionist too. You can hate the masters all you want. But, look at the fucking results.

  • Thank you so much for uploading these series of clips. It was a wonderful documentary; incredibly entertaining and insightful.

  • that wave scared the shit out of me as a kid. i think it is what made me fear tidal waves... it stuck with me. even to watch it today i still get trembles.

  • Thanks for posting and sharing. Thank you. - Behind VFX

  • This is james best film. Avatar was a complete bullshit.

  • @canaorujoman

for me, his best film was aliens

  • "Its kinder hard to understand it. Which I maybe never will..completely but..It was not I’ve never regretted the experience for a second even when I was done there, no matter what was going on."

"The irony is that, Ed Harris has probably got..you know, hundreds of hours underwater, but it was all, in a tank. You leaned in lake. Probably never been in the ocean, which is, really a shame, because the ocean really beautifully."

  • 'fuck you, i did the abyss'

  • @RobSnake should be a t-shirt

  • "Fuck you. I did 'The Abyss'." Classic.

  • i think if the wave thing was left in it would have been a bigger hit

  • this is bloody awesome. ty so very much for uploading this.

i bought the Abyss when it became available on DVD, but the extras were basic. this is awesome.

    thank you.

  • This was one of my favorite movies as a kid, if not my favorite. But, I don't really care for the "real" ending. I like the simplicity of the original ending.

  • incredible

  • What was said that pissed her off? I can barely hear what he's saying. And who said it? the cameraman?

  • @ItsNannerpus i think they ran out of film almost at the end of the scene

  • @ItsNannerpus The camera ran out of film before the take was completed.

  • For the umpteenth time - thanks for the upload. The Abyss Special Edition is one of my fave films.

Acting, actors (Mary/Ed) and story wise it excels far above and beyond to Avatar! Avatar is only great visually and its action sequences.

  • I hope they produced new telecine version for the bluray as the last bunch of copies suffer from poor lighting colour balance that gives off (green smearing) and ruins the underwater lighting effects with white lights against a blue like colour.

  • LOL 8:00 Son of abyss! No way! Absolutely not! Its still one of many best films of 1989 that I saw incredible year. I saw THE ABYSS protected three times, in regular 35mm Dolby stereo type A wow!

Got the Abyss region 2 with the documentary Under Pressure

  • Yeah, 1989 was an excellent year for the number of quality films that was produced in the box office.

  • Loop holes? Sorry I meant plot holes :)

  • Totally agree with navylaks2, It was a monumetal cock up releasing it cut down. The theatrical version makes little sense, which is why how Gale Hurd put it 'people felt it took a big left turn'. Because cameron removed an entire sub plot it left loop holes. I believe had Cameron stuck to his guns and gone with the uncut version this film would have been a smash hit, and not the underrated and forgotten film it is today.

  • This is by far THE BEST "making of" I've ever watched. Thanks to the uploader. Very Enjoyable. I have a much deeper respect for James Cameron, the cast and the film creation process. Having freshly seen Avatar, this guy knows how to make movies. The best director of my generation in my humble opinion. Im 29 btw. Oh and Ed Harris, you are one hardcore mofo.

  • The Abyss suffered from the same problem that now AVATAR does, that they had to cut major parts of the film, the long version is defernetly the best, and James Cameron should have put his money on that version from the beginning.

  • @navylaks2 I hope thats the case with "Avatar", because while i enjoyed the theatrical product, both in 3D theatres and watching it on dvd, it felt cut down from something much bigger and substantial. Many scenes looked like they were a part of something larger. But James Cameron doesn't seem to have many complaints about the finished product, understandably as its made a tonne of money, unlike "The Abyss". Will the 8 minutes added to the special edition make a difference?

  • This film is a testament to James Cameron's dedication and determination towards the art and science of filmmaking.

It's important to remember that all of the effort, money and technology going into making the film as genuine and real as possible would have been wasted if it wasn't for the wonderful story and memorable characters.

It's a philosophy Cameron has carried on to all of his movies (yes, even "True Lies"!). We should keep this in mind when "Avatar" comes around.

  • Avatar? WTF r u talking about people?

  • the film is much much better with the sub plot. cant wait for avatar. hope the cast is as good as the abyss. thanks up loader

  • AVATAR!!!!!

  • Thanks for putting this up. Its a shame the Abyss isn't more recognised considering the time and effort that went into making the film.

James Cameron is a genius and I can't wait for Avatar.

  • @gibbi8 I like Avatar but it is nothing like the Abyss. They just don't make movies like this anymore. Yes the Abyss should have gotten more glory than what it got.

  • @gibbi8 You might like Avatar which I loathed from the start of the bluray it was just pants I can’t be asked to watch Avatar ever again on bluray with dtsHDMA rubbish sound. DOLBY STEREO DIGITAL RULES THE ABYSS WAS MIXED IN DOLBY READ THE END CREDITS!

  • @gibbi8 I won’t buy the abyss on bluray with dtsHDMA only DOLBY TRUE and I don’t give a rats ass if both are lossless, lossless is another way of marketing bluray! If the film was produced in DOLBY it should be released in DOLBY TRUE-HD no ifs no buts! But Fox is above us! So we don’t get the choice of selection no more least of all with bluray, nice fucking format epic fail!

  • @gibbi8 Ágree with you but it is recognised it has 88 % on Rotten Tomatoes, and high audience ratings 7.6 onIMDB, and it made 20 milion profit and got Acedemy award and golden globe nominations and had a lot of impact!!!!!!!!
