This is all great in theory. In the UK, when you're ill if you have no address you got no doctor! Hospitals will turn you away unless it's A&E. Got no dentist unless you pay private. How do you pay road tax/insurance with no address? (Police will pick up from reg if not insured.) It's great for long term touring but you need an address or you'll soon drop out of society and have great difficulty getting back in - which you'll need when you're older!
(going back through all the vids) Y'know, As far as the solar bits go..yeah, you could probably get away with panels on top, but you'd need room for a battery to store all that charge- I wonder if one of those small 12v panels (Easy to set out or stick to a window), coupled with a jumpstarter(bonus if it has an inverter built in) would work better--But even that would take up valuable floor space.
Create a video company , sell the van from you (personally) to you (in the video companies name) , you can then write off your mileage ($0.525/mile adds up REAL FAST) ... add solar panels for laptop / TV and cooking... get a ""Planet Fitness" membership at $10/month ,, gets you recreation and showers. much better than paying $6 for a shower at a truck stop. Spray foam insulation between the interior panels and ext. will do wonders to keep noise down and keep you warm. Rip all DVD's to Laptop.
@briantracy1324 All exceptionally good ideas, except for the sprayfoam. It will plug up the factory holes intended to drain condensation and cause the van to rust out.
Really really cool.... And this may sound over the top but you should save up for a solar panel so you can charger you laptop and phone without using the car battery.. And how did you make the seats in the back stay still?
@charletted1 solar is pretty fun. just rember good gaming laptops pull alot of power around 125 watts and dont bother with a inverter you can step up the current without doing it theirs direct dc adapters that can be bought for laptops for around 25$ that bring the current to 19 volts. you lose far less then inverting it to ac then back to dc.but he would need a 250 watt panel and a 1kw battery to power a big laptop. pretty pricey.
very nice - as far as entertainment get a laptop and a library card. many libraries have thousands of dvds for free and free wifi is everywhere - also instead of curtains how about thin foam insulation sheets cut to fit the windows - would make a nice clean interior
damn your pretty cool for living in a van. i also plan on living inn a van. but i dont pay any rent. i live with my mom but mom lost her job and cant pay the rent so shes moving away and i'll be moving into a van. if i cant save money fast enough i'll just have to trade in my car. you must make alot of money lol i wish i had $700 to play around with.
You BOUGHT an air mattress? Next time: Craigslist. Free section.
Limo tint was a good idea.
I plan on getting a van for xcountry trips. Remove all but the front 2 seats.
Back area will have CONTICO plastic storage lockers (already own them - tough bastards) as the base. On top of that, 3/4" plywood (two 26x75 = full bed) then a full size mattress.
Contico boxes offer storage & height & support.
Middle part of van will have left wall mini fridge and nuker + shelves & drawers.
I think it's phenomenal you're doing this. Mainly because you're not living in the rat race and paying bills and rent like most of us do. But mainly because you are out there doing what you want to do and following your dreams. You're living life brother. I have to ask though, what do you do for a job being you're traveling a lot? Regardless I think it's risky to do what you're doing, but that makes the rewards that much better.
@27ljta How is a gym membership a waste? LOL, you get so many things for that 40 bucks. YOUR HEALTH, fitness, sauna, working out, SHOWERS, bathroom. How is it not worth it?
Paying $1050 a month in rent only, I have seriously looked in this direction. If it was just the wife and I, I am sure I'd already be there. But having an 11 yr old complicates things. Rob her of her childhood? Not fair. But still thinking of setting one up as back up home if job/apt is ever lost. Too easy to become homeless today.
@MinisterQuietBuck I know right. When he said he was paying $550 in rent I thought wow, that's actually pretty cheap lol. Maybe when you're daughter gets older and moves out you and your wife can set out to travel the USA.
For your movies, you should get a 500gig or higher external hard drive, then rip your DVD's to the drive. Easily accessible from your laptop, use playlists for continuous playing so it's more like like listening to a reg. tv playing in the background and it doesn't take up a lot of space and it will hold a good number of movies on it.

im driving a new van ,its a nissan nv 200,and i use it as a camper 4 holidays every year it a bit small 2 live in but dose as a camper, the best of luck
You're starting to see the changes now by some with the movement that is becoming sort of the renewable and clean energy revolution in it's early stages. The people that are transitioning to solar panels on their homes and driving hybrids etc. I think it's very possible that in the near future as more people awaken to what's going on in today's world that massive changes will occur. People will live their lives as they see fit, not as society or a group of elitist bilderberg types tells them.
man get a dual battery system, get a bucket with a lid and use grocery bags for emergency 2. double use the bucket with half water soap while driving the roads will agitate and do your laundry. buy and carry bear repellent because parking you WILL get a niger busting your window and that spray will fuck him up without cops arresting you for shooting to protect your life. get a small solar charger for your cell phone as last ditch help line. 9volt talk radio, microwave at stores etc etc. goodluck
To be owned by the things you own SUX!! My sister is stressed by being owned by the things she owns, She has been traveling for many years, she is a minimalist.
You live a bohenian lifestyle. In the usa people do not understand that. But in europe no one would make avalue judgment or look down on you for your artist life. I ride old Vespa's and things. But many people judge me and assume that I am 'uneducated', 'poor', 'uncultured', 'unable to get a car', etc. but all of that is so far fro mthe truth. But that is how it is in a overly capitalist society that does not value Art or true creativity and freedom.
@testbooster I think it will be more like millions. This is the dawning of a new age. Some will do it out of necessity but there will be just as many people like Adam that do it because they want to. The new generation of America, people in their 20's and 30's understand what America has become and they don't want to conform to the system that consumed their parents and grandparents generations. They want real freedom and happiness not indentured servitude to banks and utility companies.
@Perfectasthis I'm renovating a international bus right now and I'm moving into that sucker next spring. I'm giving the finger to rent and my landlord...and your right it will be months
@EasternMerchant You bet there will be laws...They get no property tax from these people and that will make them a public nuisance and the cops will come down on these people (myself also in a few months) like a ton of bricks. Van dwellers will live on the fringe of society not wanted by city or town. I'm moving into my bus/RV I'm converting next spring. I get the feeling I'll be on the move all the time when I do this.
@testbooster that's messed up! People should ask themselves... why are governments in place to start with? for public service and protection for the people! I haven't seen much of this happening lately, but they sure still like to collect taxes in order to remain as a "government" whether local or national level. In reality, no one Owns this land! This land was here before mankind! Altering land to build factories, homes, infrastructure..... they're doing more damage then we are!
rock on bro. stay safe. 24 hour box stores are good places to overnight as long as you have good curtains which you do, I have adopted the stay-inthe-van-at-the-sleeping-spot rule. Basically once I get to my overnight spot I do not exit the van. It really helps avoid attention getting which is your biggest threat. Just shit and cook and brush your teeth or whatever somewhere else before you park for the night.
@BoogieWithStew, You must not know Adam very well. Potential has nothing to do with what Adam is doing. This is something he has talked about for a long time now. Most of you people including myself talk about doing a lot of things but never actually do them. He did, and that is pretty admirable. I would support any of my friends in what ever they wanted to do. Good luck Adam and lets make some more videos.
Great choice on van, very stealthy. Thanks for sharing your idea of keeping yourself inconspicuous with the limo tented windows and curtains. I bet you feel much better now about where your money is going towards. Question, how do you dump your water bottle full of yellow pee in public because I've been stuck in that dilemma? I look forward to a part II.
This is either the lamest or most awesome thing ever, and I'm sure Adam will make that abundantly clear to us when he figures out which, that's part of the adventure!
At first I thought this was a parody, because this makes no sense. Becoming homeless to save $8K a year on rent and utilities? What?
Come on, you're a grown man. Figure out what you need to do to earn $50,000 a year (become a plumber, go to college at night, etc).
This is no way to live Adam. You're a smart guy, you can do whatever you want, but it takes hard work and sacrifice to get there. This looks like the easy way out, to avoid going after that $50,000 salary.
@BoogieWithStew You would be amazed at how many people are doing this out of choice...And yes even people who make 50,000 a year but, Items to show as success do not interest them...
Some people do it to be adventurous...Ever heard of Freeganism?...It's a way of life for some people who make great incomes, But it's almost a hobby to them.
@TheGhostofFJ Perhaps if he was 19 years old, but he's probably about 35.
Having a roof over your head is hardly an "item to show as success," but a basic aspect of life. In addition, try finding a gal to date, living in a van, too.
This is a dead-end decision, and the only reason I commented and threw out my 2 cents, is because Adam is too smart a person to ruin his future (and present) with a move like this.
@BoogieWithStew dude... life choice... he is obviously comfortable with what he is doing so instead of giving your critiques just try to be supportive in his decisions. the idea is to do what makes you happy not what other people see as socially acceptable. he isnt hurting anyone and by that alone he should be supported. basically its...LIVE FREE OR DIE!
@eliyates2 It should be fairly obvious I'm supportive of Adam, the person. An intelligent, grown man deciding to be homeless and live in a vehicle has nothing to do with what is "socially acceptable," but is rather a complete waste of his obvious potential.
@BoogieWithStew if adam can save $700+ a month doing this who the hell cares if he lives without dates for 2 years, let him save up 10 grand, pay off his vehicle and then talk about stair stepping his life back to societies norms. in fact boogie, if you were smart, you'd realize that cost of living has risen 10x faster than incomes for the bottom 90% in this country, hence, its politicians and the "system" of theft you should scrutinize. Adam good luck and this is just temporary remember.
@BoogieWithStew another brainwashed person. He does have a "roof" over his head, there are plenty of people in America who took to this lifestyle. It is pure freedom and you're just afraid of it.

@BoogieWithStew you're perception is ignorant. This isn't an easy way out, nor is this a bad way to live. YOU have been brainwashed.

I have thought about doing this myself someday.
Good luck and keep us posted on how things are going.
Take care.
