I have this lens with my d90, and I was wondering if the focus ring of this lens will rotate when I press is halfway on auto focus mode, i think my lens in broken...:|
@DaWn0FTheDead Both are great little lenses. The 18-55VR doesn't reach as far but is small and lightweight. The 18-105VR reaches a fair bit further, but weighs more. The 18-105's big brother, the 18-200VR reaches furthest of all, but costs quite a lot more.
@DaWn0FTheDead 18-55mm is a great starter lens ,very sharp an also very cheap.
18-105 mm does have a longer range , but abit softer on 18mm shots , ive notice when i did get my 18-105mm i hardly ever change my lens around. but when i did have 18-55mm i change alot from 55-200mm, but 55-200 give great depth of field when taking portrait shots. U can get the 18-105mm lens of ebay for $325 us dollars. which is reasonable price. Its not extremely sharp , but for the price its excellent.
@sajinbl hey there its true. I did purchase the 18-105 and i agree that its just better to stick with 18-55 and 55-200 , better picture quality. Save your money as the lens doesnt produce the same sharpness as those other 2 kit lens. I would ask you to go for a 18-200 which is a decent lens, but pricey. maybe even better 18-270 PZD tamron . @RS250Squid - Nice and Informative video. The only thing which i felt incorrect is, you said this 18-105mm (DX) is complimented by 70-300mm because this FX lens starts with 70x1.5=105mm. I think the same applies to 18-105mm (DX lens) which is equivalent to 27-158mm in DX Camera. Though they are both good pair, the FL does overlap a bit.
The 18-105 still has the 1.5x crop from being mounted on a DX body just like the 70-300 you mention does. This makes the 18-105 have an effective range of 27-158mm and the 70-300 has a range of 105-450mm. All Nikon lenses (when on a DX body) have the 1.5x crop factor. The DX moniker simply means the lens won't cover the sensor of an FX or film body and does not have anything to do with focal length.
Can I take macro pictures with it?? I'm looking for a lens that is suitable for macro and landscapes, but I can't buy an expensive one... so is Nikon D5000 + 18-105mm VR a good choise? please help me!!
I currently have a D5000 and the 18-105mm lens and I am planning on getting the 70-300mm lens. You said in the video that they are a fantastic team, but I don't understand how the 70-300 becomes a 105-450 lens? What is an FX lens? I would be really appreciate if you could explain it. Thank you beforehand!
@Antson93 FX lenses are designed to cover a larger digital imaging sensor than DX lenses are. DX cameras have an imaging chip that's only 67% as large as the imaging chips in FX cameras. Nikon can use less glass in the lenses to cover the smaller imaging chip in the DX cameras with their DX lenses.
All lenses will have the 1.5 times magnification on your D5000. This means if you put a 10.5mm fisheye lens on your camera, it's actually going to be 16mm. If you put a 50mm prime, it will be 75.
I currently have a D5000 and the 18-105mm lens and I am planning on getting the 70-300mm lens. Hi there..i use a nikon d80 and 18-105 VR and what happens is, when i have by
VR switched on and when i look through the lens, i can see the image shaking and also i hear a strange sound...Is this normal...or should i change my lens???...please help.....
@VYASA19 Provided these things only happen once you press the shutter halfway to focus, this is absolutely normal for the lens. The image is shaking about because one or more of the elements (individual lenses) inside the lens are moving. The strange noise comes from the motors used to move them about.
If it does it all the time, you should seek further advice.
@davestanton2779 : Hi dave, glad you seem to like my reviews, but I'm afraid that the focus, or lack thereof, is something that I am unable to do anything about.
My reviews are not shot with a dedicated video camera. They are shot on one of two compact cameras that capture video as a secondary function. Focus is set by the camera prior to starting recording and is not adjustable at any point throughout.
I enjoyed your review, it was very informative. But I have a small question about the cameras VR funtion. I've had my D90 with the18-105 lense for nearly a year now. And I have just recently started using the VR function... I realised there was a clicking noise before the photo is taken... Is it a normal clicking noise ?I looked around forums and the answer varies from person to person. I was just wondering if there was something wrong with it or not, thank you.
The VR if it makes any noise at all should make a very quiet whirring. I have had some of my lenses clicking, but this is down to the autofocus mechanism continually refocusing on the subject prior to shooting.
You might want to put your lens on manual focus, and see if it still makes this noise. If you don't hear it on MF, it's probably the focus mechanism and not the VR mechanism, and shouldn't (I think) be anything to worry about.
Yeah it might be a whirring noise that I am hearing. I checked again, with VR on and MF and I still get the same noise... after a bit of reading I think it might be the motors inside the lense. If I sligtly press the capture button, without pushing it all the way down to take a photo, I can hear the motors working ( when I put my ear next to the lense) I think what I hear before that ( without putting my ear next to it, is the motors starting up... not too sure :S)
I'm thinking about replacing the 18 - 55 with this lens 18 - 105
but a tiny bit worried about the plastic mount as I kinda abuse the camera a bit. what do you think? or any recommendations on another with a more solid mount?? thanks!!
The 18-70 is apparently a very good lens for DX cameras. It may be sharper than the 18-105 (though having used the 18-105 for many months, I can't say I've found it lacking in sharpness).
Given a choice between the two, I'd take the 18-105, not only because it gets in closer, but because VR makes a huge huge difference indoors and for longer exposures :-).
yes! it will go very well. this lens was practically built for the d90, its meant to go together. however, if you have better budget, you may get a pro lens. ive tried this on my friends d90 and it works really well.
A DX camera is a camera with a image sensor that is smaller than that of a piece of 35mm film, Or a full frame sensor which is the same size 35mm film.
You say that the 70-300mm picks up where the 18-105mm leaves off, as the FX 70-300mm equates to 105-450mm on a DX body. Whether the lens is DX or FX is irrelevant though, as the stated focal range on any lens always relates to the focal lenths that can be achieved if the lens were to be attatched to a full frame FX camera. So the 18-105mm on a DX camera in practice is actually the equivalent of a 27-157.5mm lens on a full frame FX camera. So these two lenses do 'overlap' in terms of focal length
But surely if the stated focal range on the 18-105 was equal to the focal length that could be achieved on a full-frame camera, the lens would be called the Nikkor 27-157 F3.5-5.6
I have to admit to being a bit shaky on the full-frame side of the theory, but to all practical purposes, since the effective demise of 35mm for casual photography, and taking into account the fact that the price of cameras like the d700 keeps them out of reach for most, the fact that one picks up after the first...
finishes zooming, is really my main point, and a useful thing to have in a pair of lenses.
Perhaps I have unwisely opened a can of worms by getting into the whole crop factor thing, especially as I've only ever used DX bodies, but regardless, I find that having shot test images from a tripod changing nothing but the zoom and the lens, the 70-300 at 70mm appears almost identical to the 18-105 at 105mm.
I wasn't confused before, but I am now! I don't know why 'the 70-300 at 70mm appears almost identical to the 18-105? at 105mm'. My 50mm prime (an FX lens) is equivalent to my 18-105 at 50mm, not 75mm, suggesting that the 1.5x crop factor should be applied to both DX and FX lenses. But your findings seem to suggest that the crop factor should only be applied to FX lenses.
Nikon say this about the 18-105 too: "Broad picture angle range approximates the perspective of a 27-157.5mm lens on a 35mm-format film camera or Nikon FX-format digital SLR." Im interested in getting the 70-300 so would like to know how it compares withe the 18-105 in terms of focal length! Thanks for the review btw.
As I said on the review of the 70-300 and the 18-105, and on my Zoom Comparison video, the 70-300 picks up where the 18-105 leaves off, with very little overlap. On a DX camera.
I don't have a full frame camera, so my theory on what these lenses do on a system I don't use is a little shaky.
Enjoy the lens if you do get it, it's a nice piece of kit :-)
Nice review - but when you talk about leaving a UV filter on the lens all the time, it would have been nice to know what size of filter to buy so we don't have to look it up (55mm? 58mm? 72mm? etc).
UV filters cut down on haze a little, noticably on long distance shots. Because they're completely transparent and don't alter the exposure, it's generally accepted that UV filters can be left on the lens permanently to protect the front element of the lens. There is no magnification or any other effect on the image.
I don't understand the second part of your question, but the filter attaches to the front of the lens, the lens cap goes on the front of that.
This lens would work on FX format cameras like the D3, but the cameras would have to be used in cropped DX mode. Are you sure about the manual ring overide in autofocus mode as that feature is available on AM mode lens, which this lens does not sport.About the metal mount, there are not many teles with VR in the price range. Nice review though and mint looking D200.
question. what is the purpose of the uv filter then beside of caring for the main lens on the 18-105. but ive read something that it can make things look closer it has a magnification is that true??
but anyway my question is if u put a uv filter on ur d90 which i plan on getting soon. Is it possible to still put the camera lens back on on top of the uv filter on the d90 or will it not work. that u have to take off the uv filter to insert the cover of the lens??? plz reply
Glad you liked it. Unfortunatley I've never owned an 18-55 lens. I don't have the money to buy frequently. Still, I hope the review was informative :-).

Nice video! If u put a filter on the lens, Can you still put the lenscap over it?
wisse2 1 year ago
@wisse2 Yes. You should be able to fit the lenscap over the majority of standard filters. That is, 99% of the filters out there.
Nonstandard ones like aftermarket closeup filters (that have a ridiculously convex front surface) might be a different story.

@Schyzero: Glad you liked the video :-).
RS250Squid 1 year ago
@RS250Squid

@Redeyez77 Without seeing how you abuse the camera I wouldn't be able to say for sure.
I've had no problems with the plastic mount. As long as you don't toss the camera through the air you should be fine, I would have thought.
If you want a similar lens with a metal mount, the only serious choice would seem to be the 18-200VR, but that's about twice the price.

I don't have a full frame camera, so my theory on what these lenses do on a system I don't use is a little shaky.
Enjoy the lens if you do get it, it's a nice piece of kit :-)

Oh.
The lens takes 67mm filters :).

It doesn't affect mounting the lens.

Ahhh, yes, silly me, I completely forgot about cropped DX mode.
I am very sure about the manual focus override in autofocus mode though, I've got the camera right here with me :-).
I spose since it is a kit lens they needed to figure out a way to keep the costs down, hence the plastic mount.
As for the D200, thanks. I bought it about 18 months ago. :-)

question. what is the purpose of the uv filter then beside of caring for the main lens on the 18-105. but ive read something that it can make things look closer it has a magnification is that true??
but anyway my question is if u put a uv filter on ur d90 which i plan on getting soon. Is it possible to still put the camera lens back on on top of the uv filter on the d90 or will it not work. that u have to take off the uv filter to insert the cover of the lens??? plz reply

no magnification it serves as protection and as uv filter.. nothing else.

well done. nice to listen to.
I would have liked a comparison to the 18-55 ED non VR

Glad you liked it. Unfortunatley I've never owned an 18-55 lens. I don't have the money to buy frequently. Still, I hope the review was informative :-).
