(cont.)Plus, it would take some pressure off, because he 'd have more room for error. Without quad, he needs to be perfect. But if he had landed a quad here, and then singled 2nd 3A he could turn the final 2A into 3Lz without violating the Zayak rule. (I think he considered attempting 3A again, but stopped at the last second realizing it wouldn't have counted and popped it.) He was <6 points behind Evan, so if he had done a quad and turned final 2A into 3Lz, he would have won the competition.
Oda's situation is different to Mao's. Mao tried to fix her jumps all at once, which made them unstable\, so now she relies on 3A because her other jumps are not that stable.
Oda already has great jumps and spins, and he worked hard to improve his steps and expression. He landed easy 4Ts in practices/run-throughs - if he put it into his program it would be a cherry on top, something to convince the judges that he really is a major contender. (tbc)
Why? I didn't notice anything unusual... Though it struck me as funny that she seems so controlled, composed and cool, while her son is the exact opposite: spontaneous, emotional and bubbly.
Despite a bit tentative skate here I LOVE this program. And I hope Nobu will go for quad at Nats and Olys! and land it as perfectly as in practices here! :D
If that was a reply to my post: I didn't say that I agreed with Nikolai's decision. I also think it would be wiser to go for the quad here.
But I think it's a good thing that Oda qualified here. Some weird accident (injury, fit of nerves, etc.) before or during Nationals technically could put any skater out of competition.
And JSF obsessively sticks to its rules, so if a skater placed off the podium or could not compete at all, I think they wouldn't send him/her.
[continued] For example, Kanako Murakami had a fantastic JGP season last year, but she got injured before Jr Nats and had a bad SP. Even though she came back to win LP and won over Imai and Suzuki an Senior Nats at senior Nationals, she still wasn't sent to Jr Worlds.
I think that knowing that he already has a spot guaranteed will allow Oda to relax more (and boy does he need that) and maybe go for 4-3 in SP/4-3-3 in LP at Nationals, or to change his SP. He has nothing to lose now.
His coach told him to leave it out. SOmetimes it's smart to go safe, but I don't think it was a smart decision in this case... :(
In the practice today he did a full run-through with a gorgeous quad and all jumps solid.
I hope what happened in this event will be a good lesson for both Nobunari (stop losing confidence in yourself!) and his team (get a new SP, do not leave the quad out if it's solid in practices).
On a more positive note, by winning over Daisuke he just qualified for the Olympics. The pressure is off now and can now relax and just calmly work on his programs and technique.
i really enjoy watching him:D

Why does he still leave out his quad? Does he expect to just bring it out at the Olympics?
