this is why he is the best new edition and he had the It factor bobby brown is the truth this great performance on soul train was aired on 2/11/84 season13 epi14 show#436 this is the time when the remix of the o bryan intro was being played also this is when soul train was doing the soul train history book when they played back great memorable performances of the show this is also when they NOW played/showed the music of who was coming on beginging of the episodes in 5-7 second clips
Bobby Brown sounds a lot like each lead singer of New Edition in phrasing and key at times. In the early days on "Candy Girl", he sounded like Ralph, then on the "New Edition" album he sounds a lot like Ricky, then from "All for Love" to "Don't Be Cruel" he has a more distinct voice but still sounds like Ricky in some ways. Then on "Forever", he sound has a more definite and defined sound but a lot of phrasing like Ricky and Johnnie. I really like his voice for that.
@LawPlanet12 Ralph is one of the nicest guys I have ever met and so is Bobby. I've been fortunate enough to hang out with them numerous times and it was always a blast.
@JBolton82 I met Bobby.I kid you not,I was passing through different cities traveling and decided to stop at this hotel in Cleveland which had a bar and made my way down there.I sit down to have a drink, and who do I see at the other end of the bar:BOBBY BROWN!!I go talk to him and we had a great conversation. He is nothing like the media makes him out to be. Such a kind, mellow, and respectful person and he even signed me an autograph.Dont judge anyone by what you hear or see on TV people.
I also had no idea bobby sang lead on this one his voice sounded similar to ralph on this album.and the best n.e songs were the ones which every member had parts to sing or have spoken word (mike bivins)
I never would have guess this was Bobby. He must not have hit puberty yet when they recorded this. Then as soon as a year later, when the 2nd album came out, he must have because his voice sounded different. More distinguished, more mature, older and refined.
@TonyGonzo1988 Ralph said in an interview that a lot of people don't realize that New Edition started recording "The Candy Girl" album in 1982 just before Ralph Tresvant and Bobby Brown hit puberty and their voices started changing. When the songs and album were released then New Edition went on tour it was almost a year old so they had to lip sync a lot on television performances and with live performances they struggled thorough on notes and keys they could not hit as easily.
@TonyGonzo1988 NOT AN OPINION !! THAT IS A STONE FACT ! Ralph is a verrrrry good friend of mine & THAT IS EXACTLY HOW IT WENT DOWN....Before johnny Gill came in, Bobby & Ricky had the most vocally mature voices in the group but the record labels weren't ready to let them go in that direction yet because they wanted to keep that teeny bopper money flowing....Bobby said that's why he began to rebel because the record companies wanted them to stay 12, 13 & 14 FOREVER instead of letting them grow
@lawplanet12 Thanks for clarifying that. You know Ralph Tresvant? He seems like a very down to earth mellow guy in interviews. So how did he respond to getting all that fan attention being the lead singer and all!! How did he feel when Bobby used to cut in on his leads on stage??
@TonyGonzo1988 You said Ralph voice sounds like a girl but I'm ignorant. How the fuck do you sound you dumb fuck. If anybody should go to hell it should be you. Take that ignorance and stupidity with you fag. And I notice the little bitch typed in all capital letters...... You mad bitch? Ok. I'll buy you a box of kleenex for christmas. And another thing. Your a bitch. "Just my opinion."
by the way..@3:36 whatever happened to just grabbing your chick and slow dancing like you were the only two on earth and nothing else existed or mattered????
Jammin or Funky Fresh!!!...Damn I don't remember what our exact catch phrase was in 83...At any rate this still goes hard. It always trips me out to see Ronnie backing up Mike...I think he was the only one that really lost his voice once Man replaced boy...
I'm a big fan of NE, Bobby you sound so adorable when you were young...sound just like a baby.... :-) and Ralph, you da man, boo-boo. Ronnie I met you 3 years ago at Pentagon City in Virginia, such a nice guy.
I grew up with New Edition as well. I always have been and will always be a fan. I even remember when Johnny Gill got his break from Stacy Lattisaw and they sang together! Owww!!
@KTAZYAKALMM......ummmm sorry, but my comment refers to THIS video, where, where it's posted under, where we can clearly see that it's BOBBY singing lead. I said a lot of people thought it was Ralph who sang the lead on this song, but it's not.
@GhettoKarter1992 Bobby and Ralph voices were similar on New Edition's first album. I laughed at first because I thought this song sounded so similar to 'I found that girl' by the Jackson 5(Jermaine leading vocals) but when I saw this performance I thought 'Hey, these guys are not Jackson 5 imitators. They move more like the Temptations.'
i remember when new edition had a concert at the oakland coliseum back in 86, wit cherelle and alexander o'neal it was so dark in the coliseum i fell over the seats cuz i couldn't see where i was goin lol.
All of them did a horrible job redoing this classic. I think NE's version should have been a single. This performance was actually premiered in Feb. of 1984, but it was taped in the end of 1983.
@soulchildsacomin LOL. Yeah they did great. and you know_ I THOUGHT this was a single, and recently found out that "When Will I see you Smile Again" was a single, but "I Do Need You" was not, and I was a kid 20 yrs again, a yvery young one, but farely aware of popular radio songs. I had those wrong though....

@ABSAT01 I agree with you. Bobby is my favorite member of the group. Ricky is my second. I think Ralph was overrated but that's just my opinion.
