You have to remember that they crash the equivilent of a large 4x4 or pick up twice its size, you dont see them much in the uk, but for the amrican market, i supose its different.
If you look at IIHS statistics, the 9-5 has among the lowest insurance claims for injury. Its peers in this category are the S-Class Benz and 7-series BMW.
The crash test is the equivalent of a test tube, and the insurance statistics are more of a real world measure.
9-5 is one of the safest cars in the world in terms of occupant injury rates in real-world crashes.
Lets face it folks. I had a 2002 SAAB 9-5 Aero Wagon and now own a 2004 9-5 Aero Wagon and love these cars. These cars may not have the best side impact protection but are equal to the Volvo V70 (which has side curtain airbags that don't work properly). The 9-5 has a much more reliable engine and gearbox than the Volvo, eats less gas, has a more cavernous boot/trunk space and the leather doesn't wear out as quickly as the Volvo leather. Anyone buying a Wagon will go for the SAAB over the Volvo.
plus all in all this is an over 14 year old platform and all they did is add in one of the most simple side airbag systems and they pulled off an acceptable rating
The Saab 9-5 was introduced in the 1999 model year. Although engineering changes were made to improve frontal crashworthiness beginning with 2002 models built after November 2001, these changes were not expected to affect side-impact performance.
The 9-5 was modestly restyled for the 2006 model year.

Had that dummy been leaning forward to say check a blind spot or something, its head would have went past the side airbag and hit the barrier...

@firedemon101 This is an early 9-5. Later 9-5s do reside among NHTSA's highest safety ratings.
