@blueray1969 its a... wait... are you kidding me? A parry is a type of defense. You sort of move your blade to block your opponent's blade from touching you.
... likewise, if a person attempts to continue their attack having been parried (a remise), they had better be damn certain that their opponent's riposte is either absent or going to miss. I'll also note that dodging the tip of the opponent's blade can be a valid tactic (generally by twisting your torso, which also gives you a little extra reach), but this can only be used in foil matches. With sabre (which also uses the Right of Way rules), you can strike with the whole blade, not just the tip
@turnerbattosai It is a combat sport, but the thing to remember is that it is a very stylised simulation of what were (or at least could be) duels to the death. It is therefore assumed that if someone is attacking you, you HAVE to do something about that attack before it hits. As a result, a person who "declares" their attack first (by extending the arm as in a hit or as preparation for a lunge) has Right of Way, meaning their opponent must parry rather than attempt a stop-hit
@ala5530 Right, fair enough. So, in the scenario, and the attacker lunges, parrying is the obvious response. However, there's also the option of lunging around the blade to go straight for the attacker's throat. A more than risky move, but is that legal or does it violate Right of Way?
@turnerbattosai It would be legal, bearing in mind the legal target in foil is torso minus the area covered by mask and bib (no throat hits). Of course, you need to be certain your opponent is not going to get their point on target in time, as if they can do so and land their attack soon enough after yours, the point will be awarded to them under Right of Way. Likewise, you need to make sure they don't contact your blade, more than once, anyway (one contact would be your parry, 2, counter-parry)
So, does that mean that pushing the blade aside with the back of your hand as you circumvent their right of way is legal, as the arm isn't a score zone, or would you get penalised for smacking touching blade to arm?
@turnerbattosai that's the sort of thing that would get you carded. You MIGHT get away with it once, provided you weren't blatant about it, but if the presiding ref (or one of his assistants, where applicable) catches you, there will be trouble. That said, I knew a foillist who cultivated a habit of crossing his off-hand across his torso, specifically so he could claim that sort of block was an accident. Nearly got him kicked out of at least one tournament when they didn't believe him.
Well, I have a lot more respect for Fencing now. That said, I'm keeping to freestyle. I keep my sword in my back hand and use my front hand for bare-handed parrying then bring my sword forward for stabbing. Completely illegal for fencing, but it works for me.
That said, I still want to learn some fencing so I can perfect my barehanded parrying technique. That, or Jeet Kune Do, but because of the nature of that martial art, no one teaches it.

How can you stop an attack with such a bad "perry". You left open all your chest. It looks sissy. Be shure you get the foil of the oponent out of your valid area before to try to do your own attack, else is suicide. WHY the hell you want to kill your oponent if he kill your too?
Wow these fencers are bad their not even wearing gloves and i swear her riposte is messed up

A repost is when someone repeats an entry in a thread. A riposte is a fencing attack following a parry.

I know it's tempting to type by dropping elbow-first onto the keyboard, but using your fingers is really helpful.

@Nerra36 But typing with your elbow is far manlier.
So, what's all this about Right Of Way? Does fencing actually take turns? I thought it was a combat sport, like Karate or Kendo?
