Apparently, this is a device for STUDYING the characteristics of magnetic fusion energy and is part of an international europe-centric project called ITER which aims to get fusion on the grid by 2035. So, don't hold your breath and start thinking globally instead of the old egotistical nationalistic mind set. Projects like this are vital to the human race mastering its destiny on many levels.

Well energy and matter have a realtationship between them. you might have heard of E=mc^2 So when two atoms are fused together (nuclear fusion), the combined mass does not equal the two seperate masses, so there must be extra energy left over. Assuming 'c' (speed of light) doesnt change :P
