  • they sail with the centreboard half way up when your sailing downwind because you dont need the centreboard to go forwards (unlike sailing upwind). Having the centreboard up reduces drag and makes the boat more manoverable

  • Why are some of them sailing with the centerboard halfway up? Does that reduce drag or something?

  • @bryanpgalligan I know this is late but whatever. Sometimes people will also sail with the centerboard halfway up in puffy conditions because in those conditions it makes you more stable. I don't know the science behind it, but my sailing coach told me that.

    P.S. In case you're not sure I've tried that and it works.
