I use Crush Zone as a metal distortion. It sounds very much like the distortion paul gilbert used in the video you have favored.
You need a pretty powerfull amp to get the benefit from the distortion over the twelwe'o clock setting, but much of the distortion under twelwe is more than enough for my 30 watt Roland.
Overall, it's a really good distortion pedal.
Try to find it at a local guitar shop so you can easily trade it back if you don't like it.

When you switch a pre-set on your Pro-14, is there any latency, like in many MIDI controlled footswitchers? or is it instant?

There's no latency with the Pro-14 unlike MIDI controllers. It's a great system!
