Mainly the potential of a world without racism doesn't seem to be of your fancy: Unity of non-owners of all colour finding the opponent they have in common, then taking the goods from were they pile up and distribute them democraticcally. correction: the belief that "whites" were superior..............."whiteness" then is a term that was made to divide so that those who were elite could continue to oppress. the problem with a discussion like this is that the acceptance of "white priviledge" as fact leads to some very uncomfortable implications. i mean, if the idea that whites have had advantages through a psychology of white supremacy systematically imbedded in American culture is true, how do blacks ever truly reach equality?

obviously from the fact that tim wise is of white descent you could make the conjecture he his not demonizing every person who is white. but his point is a valid one in the fact that the term "whiteness" was conjured up to benefit those individuals who "looked" white. if you look at the term when it was first being questioned in the American court system there was no scientific basis for it, but the term was accepted to maintain the belief that whites were superior.

I don't think that he was demonizing white people. He made it clear about the rich vs. poor. However, at that time the rich were white. On the other hand, his manner of speech concerning the wealthy white generates a segrated thought pattern if you focus on the word "white" or "black".

@arainade You hit the nail on the head. Someone said that he is demonizing white people but white people have UNJUSTLY demonized people of color for centuries and it has never been a problem. What's funny is that some of these comments are confirming what Wise has said over and over. When a person of color tries to share negative experiences because of their race, white people totally discount it and act like it isn't so.

PARTRIDGE: It was necessary for Professor Wise to come out in very bold, although nearly offensive terms to expound on this subject of 'whiteness' in American history. Had it been a person of color making these assertions, they would be immediately considered racist, or worse yet, inciting race discord and hatred. It's best for them to hear it from someone who shares group membership.

He is stereotyping the bejesus out of a lot people. There is some merit to what he says but in order to make his point he takes a lot of dramatic license and then becomes like the other bombastic loudmouths. In one of his speeches he mentions people asking for greater border security in order to keep Mexicans from taking jobs and lowering wages. I've rarely heard anyone make this argument. I have heard many people talk about health care costs of illegal aliens and drug crime spillover.

MAD: Agree that much of the public debates on illegals have focused on the economics of the problem and crime. However, I do think this issue is also 'masked' with some peoples' racist feelings towards Mexicans. Just my opinion.

MAD: Meant to say the reason I believe that some peoples' racism is 'masked' in this whole illegal immigration issue is because not ONE WORD is ever spoken about illegal Canadians coming in from the Northern border. They also use resources, commit crimes, etc. But do you know why people ignore activities up there?--because Canadians easily look like Americans & yet they are the ones who steal the higher wage jobs of working-class Americans and compete with Americans for the jobs Americans need.

It is a real testement to the white people in the audience that they stayed to listen. Most of what he says is accurate. It is true that planters used slave labor because they didn't have to be paid, but they were expensive to purchase, and to house, feed, and keep alive. They did own slaves because they were able to control and intimidate them.
It is also accurate that the wealthy white power base looks down on "white trash", and any non-whites, as beneath them.

Its interesting how the southern elites pitted the poorer whites against the blacks, only for their own personal gain. The poorer whites thought they were being helped out, but really, they were just being put down.
The poorer whites might have had a lot more in common with blacks, than with rich whites.
