@graddlar it was probably because Slavic people were high in numbers back then, and hence were just called by their name. The meaning of Slav does not mean slave since the derivative 'slave' came after...if that's the case, I somewhat agree. The slavic word for slave was rab, which meant "work", meaning war prisoners of Rus Slavs were given work and housing, and ate from the same table, and only after a year were allowed to choose to go home or stay with the family.

Scythians had nothing much to do with Slavs except come from the same R1a ancestry. I don't recall Slavic history ever mentioning being enslaved by some other tribe, because if they were, they wouldn't have made any history. In fact R1a gene holders do not have inherent slaver desire, it was considered a disgrace in ancient Rus to degrade a war prisoner.
