Alternative dance music and TECHNO, TRANCE, ELECTRONICA wouldn't be what they are today without DEPECHE MODE or NEW ORDER. @breakwide I wouldn't say they were cheated. You could argue that their musical experience in 2010 is more robust and dynamic than you ever had in the 80's. Back then you were limited to whatever was in the local stores and played on the radio. You didn't have Youtube to access decades old music or obscure bands at a whim. The internet has definitely opened up access to music in a way never seen, while simultaneously horizontally expanding interest in different genres on an individual level.

Depeche Mode has sold relatively the same amount of music as Britney Spears, but which do you think people will look back at in 100 years and identify as being an actual contributor to music?
