  • The heart is just a muscle...like a bicep or jaw muscle. It's performs (a very important) function. But, in no way does it help a human being feel pain, have memories or create emotions. You are not necessarily alive because your heart just started barely working..and you are not necessarily dead just because your heart needs help to work at the end of your life.

If life is considered to stop with your cerebral cortex then, inversely, it must start with the cerebral cortex.

  • Death is generally defined in most U.S. states as a situation in which the brain "flat-lines." That is, there is no major central nervous system activity and there is no detectable electrical activity in the brain's cerebral cortex.

So naturally the beginning of life is the opposite of the end of life...right? So then human life would start when neurological activity starts in the cerebral cortex (22 weeks) I see that was conveniently left off of the billboard across from PP.

  • Life technically begins before the heartbeat AND neurological activity. Life is present when there's growth, metabolism and reaction to stimuli, all present after the process of fertilization is complete. There actually is some debate in the medical community about changing the definition of death to more mirror when life begins, by going from lack of brain function to when the bodies cells stop working together for the good of the body.

  • The reason we put the heartbeat fact on the billboard is because most people know that if there is a beating heart, there's obviously life. That's not as technical as talking about cell interaction and metabolism. Many women have said they considered having an abortion until they learned that the heart is beating by the time they found out they were pregnant. Since the fact is true, we put it on the billboard.

  • I live Drive by the billboard you are talking about. I noticed it long before I realized the planned parenthood clinic was across the street.

Were you also responsible for the other one on VanNess, on the way to the other entrance to the clinc?

  • We had another billboard going around that said, "Heartbeat starts at 22 days. Brainwaves at 40 days. Life begins at conception." We're not continuing that billboard though. Is that the one you saw?

  • just curious, why aren't you continuing it?

  • We never really saw real fruit from that billboard. I'm sure it did some good, but I don't generally think billboards are THAT effective marketing, compared to Facebook advertising and stuff. In the end, we traded the money for that billboard to hire a new guy to run campus outreaches and 40 Days for Life. A great trade!
