I love Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine and I LOVE Hitchcock! This is perhaps my favourite film by H., I have watched it so many times..old Hollywood movies were great, thanks to my brother I have watched most of Hitchcock's films...it's strange that old movies had a quality most modern films lack ...
Olivier is dashing indeed. But if Robert Donat had accepted the role, probably the character of Joan Fontaine would not have been able to get a bite of her scrambled egg, would you? Check out Robert Donat in the 39 Steps and his hot movie with Marlene Dietrich. He's definitely irresistable and his accent matches with Joan's. Joan's amazing in Rebecca. You'd like to watch her scenes over and over again. Only Audrey Hepburn has the same touch as Joan.
I love Joan Fontaine in this movie. She so natural and a such a great actress. You can tell she's really putting herself into the character and not just putting on a show like other actresses.
@punksandra I know this comment is old, but I thought I'd add that du Maurier (author of Rebecca) never gave her a name, which holds true to the film as well.
Joan Fontaine looks so like Julie Christie. Never noticed it before. Great film. Great book. Can never understand why Daphne Du Maurier is not more widely recognized as a truly superior writer. Her other book "My Cousin Rachel" is outstanding too.
Watched it on TV again - still takes my breath away - Joan Fontaine - niave/bumbling/inadequate - Lawrence Olivier - so worldly wise/sauve/sophisticated - add in Judith Anderson as the faithful/dedicated mad bitch and it's an amazing recipe. Love it.
the book is absolutely brilliant.. so is the film.. I wish they weren't so sharp and dramatic though.. would've been nicer.. love the bit where he says "eat your food like a good girl" lol
I have to compare this movie by alfred hitchcock to the book, for school. i thought of looking how hitchcock shows the unsecurity of he protagonist ... but I'm not sure if it's good..i have to write 10 pages...oO what do you think? please help me...
I had to read this book for english and thought it was going to be soooo gay but its so good! i can't put it down. looking forward to seeing the rest of this movie :D
Stell dir vor, es gibt auch einen Roman (der im Übrigen die Vorlage für den Film war) und ein Musical (dessen Vorlage ebenfalls der Roman ist) namens Rebecca. ~.~
I have countless favs that are B&W, too! the best of Chaplin (Gold Rush, The Dictator), Eisenstein (Nevsky, Potemkin, Rubljov), Orson Welles (Citizen Kane, plz!), Ingmar Bergman (Seventh Seal), Casablanca -this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship lol
These just came into my mind.
Oh and of course my fav from Hitchcock is also B&W! lol
Well, you're right. Everybody's into the incomes a film can produce. Which most of the times has nothing to do w/ artistic value.
But if you think of Griffith's Intolerance - which IS a masterpiece, but was a flop to say the least - ppl had a huge twist in their taste back in the B&W days, too.
I just say it as consolation... lol
(And no wonder it simply upsets me, that I can't buy this masterpiece of hitchcock on dvd!urghhh)
I know, I watched it. :) But I'd prefer it on dvd. My eyes hurt if I watch the computer monitor that long. :(
I wouldn't mention Intolerance and Birth of a nation in one sentence: the former is inarguably a great movie (even w/ its naivity). You can forgive him Birth of a nation if you watch Intolerance. IMO.
caly: I thought Birth of a Nation was interesting and I occaisionally have watched it. Only twice. I don't agree w/ the racism at all, but I find it interesting to watch.
I wouldn't say Birth of a Nation is not interesting. But "problematic".
You don't have these kind of contradictions in Intolerance.
Of course, as a film director Griffith did a great job in B of a N, too. But Intolerance just has it all! No wonder so many great directors (I would say: the best of them)refer to Intolerance as a basic piece of film art.
You can buy Citizen Kane in internet stores. Bust most of them are not shipping to every european countries.
And I would like one w/ Hungarian options. (Not that I don't understand English, but it would be better to have an English-Hungarian version. Now THAT is totally out of stock. All dvds were sold right after its publication in 2003)

I believe Alfred Hitchcock perfected the cinematography of this film. The images are so rich in detail and depth you forget this is a black and white film. Simply Amazing!!
"Hot"? Hotheaded I think, Olivier played de Winter like a psycho, it was brilliant. I was in stitches looking at his face during the inquiry-hearing, just when his about to lose it with the inquisitor for asking the question about: If he knew why his first marriage could have been in trouble before Rebecca's death. Ohh, Joan how could you? You snatched the moment away from me when you feinted that day.
Joan was wonderful in this film.Everyone is so rude to her in this film.I love the scenes of her with Mrs.Danvers-total louse!!The funny scene is Mrs.Danvers obsessing about Rebeccas fur, underwear and nighty to a terrified Joan.

calybdis 3 years ago
caly: I meant that it's ridiculous that such a great and well-known film is 'out of stock'.

Yeah, I know... :(
And what do you say about Battleship Potemkin? Last time it was released in 1998.
(The No1 movie on the Berliner 12 w/ the most quoted scene in film history)
Now as I see it was re-released last year - but available only in US and Canada. I only hope that this year I can buy it at home.
Anyway: it shows that film classics are re-released only every 10 year.
Which means we have to wait for Citizen Kane for another 4 years...:-(

Also, I think I saw a copy of Citizen Kane in Barnes and Noble about a year or more ago.
