Salaam. Mashallah, it was very interesting to hear about your experiences in the teaching world. I am also a lecturer at college and I also wear hijaab. Alhamdulilah my hijaab has brought me barakaah more than anything else and not hindered me in any way. Keep up the good work!
it's good to wear hijab and i'm glad people do it at work and there's nothing wrong with nikab at work. if they can deal with it on the streets they should be able to deal with it in schools the blurdclaats
While I am against wearing the hijab or religion in general, I see no excuse for anyone to discriminate teachers, students or citizens alike for wearing a hijab. If they start infusing the course with religion, then I do have a problem with that; but if they just keep on doing their job, then I treat them with dignity. =)
Subhan'Allah! :)... You Are An Inspiration Sis.. Alhamdulilah May Allah (SWT) Bless You And Your Family Ameen Sumameen. Thankyou ever so much.. Alhamdulilah.. I myself am in and out of schools gaining experience.. I done a degree in fashion design.. Afterwhich oddly enough... gained a passion for teaching Alhamdulilah.. seemed the perfect job since I started wearing my hijjab.. and seemed like the right type of atmosphere for my type of person.. this video Inspired me to go for it... thanks! xxx
wow alhumdullilah Im so happy I stumbled upon this video! I am a teacher here in the States and I'm about to start my first year teaching secondary school (called middle school or junior high school here) with my hijab on, also in an inner-city school. I am super nervous about the students/parents reactions, but I think you are right that as long as you respect the students, they will respect u back. JZK for the video, I feel reassured now :)
I want to be more modest and eventually start wearing the hijab. I also want to be a teacher. Honestly, I would imagine that teaching and hijab would go well together since teachers generally dress more modestly people do than in other professions. All your hijab tutorials are inspiring and awesome to me as a non-Muslim :).
I've always dreamt to teach, but I live in France, and doing so with a headscarf is like trying to fly. It's impossible.
I'm now learning English, in order to make a Master of PGCE (post graduate certificate of education) & then go in the UK to teach French. My biggest fear is not being allowed to do so even there... without removing an important part of me.
Salam sister; this video was reli useful. Im a Biology student and I have teaching in mind as a career and Im also a hijabi. I want to teach at college; Alevel students. I wanted to know after doing a PGCE; can u straight away go on to teach at college or do u need experience at high school for some yrs??
Hello Sister Amena, Im so glad i found this video. I'm just starting to wear a hijab and am in university studying to be a teacher inshallah and have been wondering how students/ parents would react to having an hijabi teacher. But your video really helped and made me feel better and confident about my decision of wearing hijab and teaching! Thank you so much! =] S.
ASA, I think it's great that I happened to watch this video -- I'm planning on going into teaching as well...also on the College level (Insha-Allah)...right now, I'm working as a child care provider, but I'd like to teach others about the value of my current job...I want other women (and men) to understand how important these early years are! I'm so excited to have finally chosen a career path (I'm in my 30's -- it's about time!!).
I've got a problem and I've tried to get help from conexxions and a couple other places including unies but I can't seem to get a answer to this. I hope you can help me, inshallah
I am thinking of doing maths and english lang degree then I want to go do a PGCE. So will it be possible to teach both english and maths at secondary adn college?
I hope you have an idea since your a teacher yourself too.
Amena u r a star.. This vid has helped me alot.. Inshallah come next year I will begin my PGDE primary teaching. I can do it jus now but I want to get hands on experience first.. As u kno I'm a fairly new hijabi.. So this was very interesting and useful to watch.. I have one ? Tho.. Also as u may b aware I want to start my own YouTube vids.. My ? Is. .. Do ur students even ask or recognise u off YouTube.. Xx
i was wanting to ask you how you done your headscarf in this picture in one of your videos were you were telling the viewers about fashion, im sorry i dont knw the exact video but i hope you can find the video and make a tutorial of how you done headscarf in that picture.
salaam aleikum sis. im a dude and ur wondering whats a troll like me doing on a sisters page, but ur vid on feminist thoughts and that tim winter essay caught my attention. i find out youre into the hijab trend thing. i have this idea. please dont laff, but have u ever thought of designing a combat hijab ? complete with accessories and paddings : a dress for women in hostile situations that still ensures they are obeying ALLAH. what do tyou think ?
Ive been teaching for 16 years now and love every second, I teach the younger ones, yes you do get tierd alot but teaching is very rewarding..(reception 4/5) when i started wearing the head scarf the staff were lovely except the headteacher who had an issue, the matter quickly settled when i mentions the union, however i still feel that she has a grudge, this will not stop me in my work or wearing the hijab... my children often bring me flowers from their gardens so i can put them on my hijab :)
@nabz3000 yes I agree sister, it is SO tiring but amazingly rewarding. Wow, a headteacher having issues about hijab - that must have been difficult. I'm glad you mentioned the Union! Alhamdullilah. Stay strong in your hijab, i'A
Sister, u are lucky u don't have any problems with the hijab. My world changed totally whenI put my hijab on 5 years ago. Suddenly people dont know me. I am like the same person.. arent I? The few people that didnt care about my hijab, they say that since I started using it I seem to have more selfasteem and I seem more free. And that is the way I feel. But people dont believe me. Is it just me who has experienced this?
@bismillaislam wow, really, people stopped wanting to spend time with you? S'A, it does show what people really think of you. I definitely feel more free, like I am able to control 'bad' gazes in a way, and even the thought of stepping out without it makes me feel embarrassed lol. It is definitely liberating.
@Amenakin Really, and it's like wierd in a way. But it's true. The hijab actually opened up my eyes. Now I know who likes me for me and for how I look.
And I am proud of beeing a muslim, and beeing a woman and actually showing that to the world, by wearing the hijab, it makes me feel wonderfull. I am a muslimah, and I am SO PROUD it!
@bismillaislam I don't think you are the only one who has such experiences, unfortunately. I lost my job when i started wearing hijab. Lost friends and i sometimes feel like even some members of my family treat me differently (in a bad way)
since i started wearing it. People look at you in a different way. Well what can we do about it ? Real friends don't leave because of a piece of fabric.
P.s. Excuse my bad english it's like my third language =P.
this was a very helpful vid sister! thanks a bunch! im off to do my practical in June, quite scared frankly but you gave a few good tips here and i pray to Allah it'll be fine =)
@imrana6 what a shame that you're freedom of choice has been taken away from you. What are private Muslim schools like in France? I wonder how similar they are to the Islamic schools here
I not only LOVE your sense of fashion and style... but I now I LOVE how you are a teacher as well. I feel like I can relate to you in so many ways now :D
Inshallah I am on my way to becoming a teacher as well. I feel like in the US, it is the ideal job for a muslimah ( and this is totally in my opinion).
@Amenakin omg i am so late in responding back... but i am doing a multiple subject degree to teach elementary grade levels.. :D I am almost done alhamdolilah!
here in the US if you want to be a teacher you go to university for 4 years and in your last year or last semester you "student teach" under another teacher then you graduate and you look for a school to teach in. love that color hoojab on you! :-)
@StrainSop... oops, I forgot to say that you need a University degree before doing the PGCE course. So ours is exactly the same time length as y'all ;o)
:) I teach Spanish at the university level. That's the only reason I am doing the phd because teaching at the university level suits more my personality. I am still traumatized by high school..lol...
salams Amena, I too am considering going in to teaching but was not sure about age group! I think I may prefer college students simply because Im assuming they will have more of a desire to learn? Please correct me if im wrong. What subject do you teach by the way?
@sabenaali wa 'alaikum as-salaam, sister. What do you want to teach? I think the desire to learn varies by subjects. More 'serious' (or rather, relatively more 'serious' subjects) like the Sciences and Maths, which students tend to take on their way to joining the medical field, tend to be studied by MORE students who have a stronger 'desire' to learn. So my students are, on the whole, aiming to do well. Of course that doesn't mean you don't get the 'bad apples' in any course...
Im planning to teach Biology at A level or the general sciences at secondary education. I feel you are right I just have to think about it abit more. I was told that if you do the PGCE for higher education you wont be able to trach at secondary schools is that true?
@sabenaali yeh, I've heard that, too. But it's possible to go the other way. There's quite a big change in those 2 levels of teaching! Hope, i'A, that you enjoy whichever route you take :o)
il show this video to my cousin, she was so inspired when i told her you were a teacher, thts wat she wanted to be but it ddnt work out so well, and now shes considering going back to uni part time as she has a lil one aswell... ur a role model amena, mashallah :)

As a biology teacher, has there ever been a conflict between the material you teach and your religious beliefs ? i.e. Evolution ?
