Wonderful movie. Hard to watch it without tears. The story is also told in Oh Holy Night: The Peace of 1914...on amazon. This short, illustrated book reflects on the truce and the events leading up to it. You can read several of the letters that the soldiers wrote to home describing this event.
Wonderful movie, we saw it two years ago while snowed in for 3 days. This story is also told in Oh Holy NIght: The Peace of 1914...see amazon...which has several of the soldiers letters to home, describing that Christmas.
To me, this was one of the most moving moments of the 20th century. Within the horrors of trench warfare, a truce was called on Christmas 1914. Many don't realize that it happened, but it did. Exchanging chocolate, cigarettes, food, drink, and even friendly soccer games was just incredible. Generals were horrified back in warm headquarters but in the trenches humanity reigned for a few hours. Stunning.
It is the hardest thing as a soldier to deal with, Christianaty and your duty.. But the Lord say love you enemys, that is why being a true follower of Christ is so vary hard. the test.
in my opinion this is the greatest moment in History. It is the only point in history where the true spirit of mankind and peace overcame ALL darkness!
Möge Gott Sie segnen alle und jeden. Von einem Kind des deutschen Vaterlandes
@pcjoel999 Der Mauerfall ist ehrlich gesagt ziemlich genauso - auch so ein wichtiger moment.
But I noticed something - the german singer spoked english and the captn could speak english and french aswell, but nobody except the germans spoked german. It kind of makes me smile and on the other hand it is bothering me ... that our neibours never thought of "maybe it would be useful to understand them" english is almost normal (french isn't that popular ^^ - but learned in every city)
@Gabbafoo In der Tat. Beide sind große Momente in der Geschichte unseres Landes und sollten es auch nicht vergessen werden. I see your point but film makers rarely go into detail about that kind of thing... a shame really
the sad thing is..when this happened in 1914, when the german and british commanders saw this truce, they fired shells into no mans land in outrage ,killing many men who were simoply sharing christmas eve
@MrNobodyGivesAFuck that isn't accurate. They didn't hear about this particular seise fire until about 2 months afterwards. After this, there were attempts at other ones, but that is when they would fire shells. There was one particular seize fire that lasted into January. When there was a scheduled shelling of one armies trenches, the other army would allow the army, who would be getting shelled, into their trench
It's funny how this is a real event that happened during the opening months of the First World War. And it never happed again just like this in the years that followed.
Man this shoes the true nature of human beings. Grunt from Mass Effect 2 made a great point when you recruit him, "you extend your hand to help and you arm the other, wise Shepard." true words have never been said.
How absurd is it that we are still killing each other over nothing? It's fuckin 2011...I think it's about time we stop this petty bullshit and embrace as brothers.
Christmas 2010 Greetings to All. I'm a 50's something Peace Activist from the 60's. I look at this part of this film whenever I need to be reminded that it is usually mostly the so-called "leaders" who want to go to war, but only some of the individual soldiers. War is NOT inevitable. People choose to fight and CAN choose NOT to as well. Let us ALL PRAY FOR PEACE IN 2011 and Beyond. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
@outskool100 Just as your english teacher lied to youby telling you you could write in english... Even if you don´t believe in any of it, you could try to enjoy the other values this film has. Any way, Merry Christmas to you as well (no hostilies, for tomorrow is Christmas eve...)
I always loved the ending of this movie, as the Germans were sent off to the Russian front as punishment, they started singing the songs they sung with the French and Scots,
@outskool100 They felt a degree of humanity, all of them. I can imagine that alot of them where thinking of home on that night (christmas-eve). Beyond my imaginings, I can't tell.
@outskool100 Because back then, men believed in God and Jesus...powers larger than ALL of us, and wanted to show kindness and humanity. THANK YOU, liberal progressive scum, for chasing God and kindness out of mankind...
@outskool100 you mean like your hero, Stalin did? Oh, wait...he ordered YOUR types to do it, and you did...Do not think We didnt review your profile, and saw the picture of Lenin. What a miserable, pitiful little creature you are. You are blocked.
@outskool100 Close enough...a Communist is a communist, responsible for over 80 million deaths since 1945, with the total STILL GROWING. You cannot say THAT about the Germans.
@shrineheart87 Thank you, Our friend! The communist "outskool100" (who denies being a communist) could learn a lot from you! His claim of 902 million dead from capitalism is the silliest made-up figure We have ever heard. Where do idiots get this stuff from?
@shrineheart87 Oh, no...We are NOT a communist; We are a monarchist. We meant that the clown who is a communist could learn from your kindness. We are firmly anti-communist because communism seeks to deny God.
christmas is the only time of the year where men see one another as fellow travelers towards the grave and not strange creatures bound on other journies.
it was not like that... the propaganda made ppl think that at the other side of trenches there are mosters.... when they saw normal ppl like them that want to go back home, that want to survive, that they are same cold and they miss their families they recognised that this war was mistake - unecessary slaughter.... this X-mas back in 1914 was so magic...
@0LuckyInternetUser0 It might be strange, however, the movie is based on historical fact. Maybe it didn't happen just like this, but it did happen. Even the parts about meeting in no man's land, and inviting enemies into the different trenches.
@0LuckyInternetUser0 Actually, warriors have a deep respect for each other, warriors make some disparaging remarks about the people that are fighting against, no different than UFC fighters before a game. You always have respect for someone who is willing to pick up a gun and stand up for what they believe, much more so than those who whine at home because they are most likely afraid to "man up". It doesn't mean that you care more about your enemy, just simple RESPECT.
Are the Germans and British?
