What do people expect for their money. I payed £70 for mine from blockbuster and it does what it said on the box. Its a nice basic easy to use blu ray player with a usb for divx playback and well worth the money.............
Good review but three things that would have been nice to know: Start-up time, DVD upscaling and functionality/quality of the remote control. My favourite bits: Enthernet, newtube and sonic blu-ray player. ^_^
all sony bluray players that I've seen so far kinda "lag" during browsing menus if you compare them to the ps3.same is with their tvs.don't forget the ps3 has very powerful cpus and is a capable computer while this is just a bluray player and does not need a cpu...
I bought it not so long ago and so far it's great. One question though: is there any way to change the quality of YT videos on it or it will always run on the default 360p?
this device wont power a external usb HDD it only runs on thumb sticks or an external HDD which has its own power supply. I had to modify a usb cable and a usb charger into one cable for my WD passport to work on it
Can someone tell me if the usb port can power a portable hard drive? Ive brought a song dvd player in the past that couldn't power it so had to take it back. Thanks :)
@bigrock007 This is very weird, I've never encountered this problem. Try connecting a different HDMI cable into it, if that fails it's probably a faulty unit and would suggest contacting Sony support.
Sorry to hear you've had a bit of a bad experience! :\
Hello. I've been experiencing an issue when playing DVD movies with this player. The picture cuts out for a few seconds and my TV displays "invalid format" error. And sometimes there's picture but no sound. Why is that?
I have wifi, is there a way to connect it to my wifi ? I also bought an ethernet cable, do I just plug one in the dvd player and the other in the modem ? I'm so confused >_<
@samoan909 You plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the blu-ray player and the other into the modem.
It can only accept wired connection not wireless, however you can get around it by getting a Ethernet wireless adaptor, it works by plugging into the mains on your wall and acts as a wireless modem, it has an ethernet port on it which you can then use that to connect the device to your blu-ray player.
I just bought this. How does one connect to the internet ? It doesn't have built in wifi so what would I have to buy to be able to use our home wifi ?
@samoan909 You have to connect via Ethernet cable, so I guess you could get a mains wirelesss link that has an ethernet port, which you could then connect to the player.
@dulezivkovic I never use those files, so personally couldn't state this, but by their website, it says it supports it: sony.co.uk/product/blu-ray-disc-player/bdp-s185#pageType=TechnicalSpecs
If you already have a PS3 setup and linked to the internet, is there any reason to do the same for this player? From your review I assume you do not get anything that you don't already have on the PS3?
@MyKeyReviews Thank you for replying. I can't decide whether to get this or a Samsung BD-C5500. I love this ones appearance. It's small and looks classy. Although they are slow I love the menus as well because I also have a PS3. But I still can't decide. There are many good reviews on Samsung.
@cancikmancik Although I can't say anything about the Samsung due to not having it, I can safely state that my friend loves this Sony Blu-ray player as he has one too, if that helps. ^_^

@Xenonas I'm not too sure, you would think that if a video is available in higher quality it would give you the option to display it at such. :|

Hi
I've got a problem with my blue ray player (yes this model here in the vid).
When I turn my Blue Ray player on, the TV turns black. All you can see is the first blue ray / Sony image, then the blue object and then it's black.
That just happen when the player is connected via HDMI.
Do you know a solution. Thanks!

would it not just be the slow refresh rate of you TV?
MrJacksjack 2 months ago
@MrJacksjack Not at all, I've tried this Blu-ray player both on my main TV & small one.
Also when the main TV is in use, I use my small one to play FPS games, if the small TV had any lag, I would of sent it back the day I got it. :P

A good BluRay player, and I can live with the slight sluggishness of the menus.
But it is disappointing that iPlayer has no subtitles available, and there is no ITV player or 4 OD at all.
Overall, I feel this technology isn't quite mature yet - anyone who is hard of hearing will need to wait a while before getting Bravia Internet Video.

CancerebroTV 2 months ago
@CancerebroTV I'm not really sure what the problem is, maybe a faulty connection between your player and TV? Or the player itself?
Does it happen often? If so I would suggest contacting the retailer or Sony directly. :|
