  • wild hedgehog in england are called tenrecs and you can get them as pets from exotic dealers

  • HE IS SOOOO CUTE!!!!!!!

  • You mentioned that they are easy to care for, and truthfully they really arent. You left some things out, like the fact that require a heat lamp or some form of heat supply because they have to be kept at a constant temperature and also that their wheel needs to be cleaned sometimes everyday because they just LOOOVE to poop on it. Also, I wish I knew where to find a hedgie for 100 bucks, all together my Ringo was 500.

  • he's gorgeous and so are you :)

  • @vampyriccry don't worry about your hedgie swallowing the soap water. Hedgehogs have a well developed sense of smell and know what thy shouldn't ingest :)

  • i saw you on animal planet last night on pets 101. It was so cool seeing you on t.v. XD

  • HIS SO CUTE i want one.

  • thx!!! gettn one! your cute too!

  • I got mine for 40. Came with everything I needed to. The owner couldn't keep him any longer. And he really could have be a better owner then he was. He's still shy with me. It breaks my heart. :[

  • It's soooo cool my hedgehog's name is stanley too! I love ur hedgie!

  • This is a great video! keep up the good work :)))

  • Do the prickles hurt??? my sister got one for her 16th birthday and I have a habit to hug animals because there so cute!!!!! will it hurt the hedgehog or me?

  • I have a question on bathing your hedgehog. I just gave my hedgehog his first bath, because he goes to the bathroom while running on his wheel. Well from what I have read I did go out to get him Johnson's tear free baby shampoo, but I did not use it while bathing him having the fear of him accidentally drinking the water. I did use a tooth brush to brush out any mess. Is it safe to use the baby shampoo? Or am I better off with just the warm water?

  • Can you take them out in the sunlight?

  • Arent hedgehogs prickly? like doesnt it hurt to pet him?

  • OHHH MY GOSH ARE YOU MY SPIRIT TWIN? hahaha, I want a hedgehog and a Mucha tattoo soooo bad. Oh and I have bright red hair. Weiiiird. :)

  • im getting a hedgehog monday his names gonna be jo-mo

  • i had one his name was lennon he bit me and his quills gave me allergies :(

  • hi this is colt from hedgehog fever on facebook i was wondering if you would like to make a donation to hedgehogs of america

  • I SAW U ON PETS 101!!!! U WORK AT A LIBRARY U RIGHT BOOKS FOR KIDS AND I THINK THAT IS KEWL!! please do not call me a stalker i just like what you do for those kids and i like your hedgehog

  • I saw you guys on pet 101! Then I was here on youtube looking at hedgie vids and saw the title and was like "wait a minute wasnt she on pet 101" and you were! I was sooo happy I found you!

  • @MsHorselover8 Awesome! Glad you found us!

  • I'd love to get my own hedgehog, but the thing is that I can hardly afford to feed myself. I'll wait until I move out to get one.

  • Thanks for making this video.

Its been helpful as my family are currently looking after a wild hedgehog. He's been with us for about 4ish weeks now - and is about the same size as your Stanley (which is underweight in his case, as he's a native UK hedgehog).

I was wondering if Stanley hibernates at all? And whether you give him larger amounts of food around that time to bulk him up. (We currently feeding ours wet cat food). Also, does a kind of purring slightly flemy sound mean contentment?

  • how do theyr prickly spikes feel? o=

  • He is adorable! when you first got him, did it take awhile for Stanley to get use to you holding him?

  • Could you show us his cage?

  • @hilarydilary I have checked, and they are! :) I'm so happy! I have been learning so much about them and can't wait to get mine! :)

  • what brand of cat food do you give him?

  • Dude, if I get a hedgehog, I'd totally name it Sonic or Sega, lol! Sonic's my fave. video game character, even though most people like Mario or Shadow better.

Stan's my type a guy; I'm more nocturnal myself. :)

  • Me and my sisters just watched pets101 and fell in love with Stanley now were begging our mom for one she finally said yes so I'm sooo excited!!!! Do you have any tips for us??? :)

  • @missmusic617 Hi there! That's great that you're thinking about getting a hedgehog! There are definitely some things to consider, though: first and foremost, you have to find out if your state allows hedgehogs as pets. many states have "exotic animal" laws, and it's illegal to own hedgehogs, ferrets, and a number of other non-native/exotic species. States that do not allow exotic pets will probably not have vets that can treat them, so that's a big thing to consider.

  • Hedgehogs are relatively easy to care for--Stanley needs his food & water checked daily, his cage/wheel cleaned weekly, and a bath every few weeks. That being said, he is also nocturnal and shy, so I don't get to spend a lot of time with him when he's awake.....and when I do, he isn't affectionate or cuddly. I always tell people that, although hedgehogs are awesome, younger children are better off with a guinea pig, hamster. etc. Stanley is awesome, but he's not for everyone! :)

  • this hedgehog is adorable. you seem like an awesome owner :-D

  • Wow. Stanly looks a lot like my little girl.

  • love your video you are really nice. hope all is well with you and your sweet baby I have a chinchilla!! my mom wants a hedgehog

  • that little nose gets me every time ^.^ god they so cute

  • You come across very well on film! You shoud be on TV!

  • ok i have a cat , she likes to catch lizards and bugs , is that a bad thing if i try and get a hedgehog , i think she'll leave it alone but im not sure, but if i do get one ill only have to buy on type of food yay! haha :D

  • I've owned a pygmy hedgehog before, I got him from a breeder and he was great and looked and acted alot like your stanley here in this video. I recently decided to get another one. This new guy completely hates to be handled. He hisses and freaks as soon as you came near him. I've had him for about a week now and try to get him out for a bit every night but he's still not wanting to warm up. Just wondering if you have any ideas into how to coax the little guy into not being such a grumpy gus..

  • great video hilary!

  • i have 1 and i got ride out it cozz it bite me (my finger)

  • @MissRosieSmithxx thats no reason to give it away! thats like saying if a baby poops that ur gonna give it away!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for the info!

  • You're just fantastic.

  • dont feed him alot of mealies andgrubs because their hi in fat and calories.

  • what type of cat food do u use

  • awesome vid and love ur tats! hedgies rule!

  • i just want to no one thing are they pokey when they are held bare handed

  • Thank you for posting this. I love it! I have done research for months on hedghogs and this helped so much. I am afraid I will get one that I'll clash with. I also cannot for the life of me find a breeder withing a 4-5 hour radius of my home and I can't imagine purchasing a hedgie without meeting it first and then making it suffer a flight. I guess when the time is right I will find a perfect friend.

Oh, and you are so pretty. Your features are so gorgeous and you have great personal style.

  • Great video! Thanks for holding the hedgie, too many videos of people trying to follow the swift-footed little guys around.

  • wat do you do for heat ?

  • I don't have a hedgie but want one, in the meantime I enjoy you and Stanley! Yes I have to agree we'd all like to see more of you and the little dude.....

  • Thanks, this is a great video!

  • Hedgehogs do bite, some of them are really crazy and some tame, they have different personalities , and even sometimes they become aggressive for a few weeks and then back to normal, they are awesome though !

  • omg you have beautiful eyes

  • that is a great video!

  • will they eat moist cat food?

  • could you make a vids with what kid of cage he has?

  • Stanley sounds alot like my Hedgehog Kooshi!! When she wakes up she will run and run and run some more then drink and go back to bed! Lol

What do you do for nail clipping? Kooshi's nails are soooooo long but im afraid to cut them cause i have to hold her leg still and i dont want to hurt her!!

  • PIGGY!!!

  • why does he hiss? mine hisses like crazy everytime i pet him.

  • i think it means that they don't want you touching them

i've been reading up on them and yeah @_@

  • did you get stanley at a pet store or breeder?

  • both.....i went to a local pet store, and the owner was a breeder. she brought him in for me, sorta like a "hedgehog special order."

  • Thanks for a great video! Hedgehogs are widely misunderstood...many new owners have unrealistic expectations.

    Stanley's a lucky guy. You're great with him. :)

  • Hey. Ive had a cinnamon hedgehog named knuckles for 2 years and i really liked your video. Most people that post videos have no idea what there talking about but you did. Good job!!

  • ohh! i want one soo so bad :/ thank you for making this video, i was looking them so i could see what they were like as pets, i really want one, i ask my mom.. and she said they were too expensive, so i am saving up for one :D i can wait! thye loo so cute, and just like a good pet :]]]]

    ps-stanley is amazing :D

  • i have a hedgy named gary! hes still a baby! for some feason he hates his wheel! my mom said its cuz hes yooung and dnt kno how. idk tho but i love him hes kool. i had a girl b4 but she died i cried like a baby :[

  • LOL I have a hedgie named stanley too!! Just got him two days ago. He is still very nervous and everytime i hold him he poops green :( he makes me worry. He is playing at night but have not witnessed him drink or eat yet :( Is this going to get better? what was your experience when he first came home? Thanks for the video and he is adorable!

  • he poops... green? D:

  • i guess stanley is the going name for hedgehogs! my stan was understandably nervous when i first brought him home, but he settled in within a few days. make sure you handle him a lot so that he gets used to your smell! and he probably eats and drinks at 3 a.m.--so he IS eating, but just not so that you can see! have fun with your stanley!

  • Anyways, just wanted to say thank you and Stanley is a very handsome boy!!!

  • @Existantia Thank you! I agree! :)

  • Thank you so much for making this video! I've been thinking about getting a hedgie for a little while now and I too have been looking on youtube for more info. I too, am allergic to a lot of animals and was curious about hedgies and allergies. I'm thinking about meeting someone with a hedgie in the area to see what it's like. I've found a breeder, but I still want to do lots of research (i.e. find out if theres a vet in my area that specializes in exotic animals)

  • good for you for doing your homework first! that's super important.

i have heard that 99% of people with animal-related allergies will be fine with hedgehogs, but good idea to hang out with one first. good luck!!

  • Aww thanks!! I love your other vid of Stanlet. In the first 9 seconds, he looks like he's playing Peekaboo!! Please make more, he's lovely.

  • @Existantia well just give them a bath every once in a while.use a toothbrush and non perfume soap to wash their quills.dont wash their face though.and not in the ears

  • @kinzie8989 Oh I've had my little one now for a year so I know what I'm doing now haha. Thanks though!

  • i have a hedgehog too. they are very adorable. i had to actually tame mine. boy was that fun.. :(

your video is the most accurate of all the ones i've watched so far.

  • Now i have heard that you can switch their sleeping time is that true?

  • yes, you can. They can adapt very quickly.

  • i don't know if you can, but you shouldn't! they are nocturnal creatures and should remain that way. not good to try and change that!

  • @gayhplover FALSE!That is just like telling u 2 switch sleeping times.u wouldnt like it.neither would ur hedgie.plz dont do this to ur hedgehog!!!!!!

  • so their quills or whatever u call them dont hurt? i want one!

  • 3. stanley likes bananas a bit, but really really prefers insects and grubs. they all love insects but i think fruits/veggies are a

personal preference" depending on your hedgehog.

    :)

  • Thank you. I appreciate it. :)

  • 2. they don't really sit still in your lap. they are natural burrowers, and will only settle down once they're safely snuggled into a blanket or your elbow or whatnot. i suggest having a blanket on your lap so that they can burrow and feel safe; then they'll probably go to sleep on you, which is the cutest thing ever.

  • If someone is allergic to animals such as hamsters and guinea pigs, will they be allergic to hedgehogs?

  • hedgehogs lack the dander that makes people allergic to other animals, so i think the answer to that is no.

  • I have a few questions because you seem very knowledgeable about hedgehogs. :)

How often do they poop? If I get one will they go to the bathroom on me? Does is sit still in your lap? Do they cuddle and enjoy the company of humans? Am I able to feed it fruits and vegetables?

    Thank you.

  • 1. depends on when you're hanging out with them. during the day--when they'd normally be sleeping---they will be more sluggish and not be as likely to poop. however, at night the little guys are super-active; this is when they tend to "use the restroom" the most, so your likelihood of getting pooped on is higher.

  • OK, i answered all of your questions but i had to do it in 3 different posts!

    :)

    hilary

  • Great vid!

  • Thanks for the information, I want to buy one and the video was very helpful :D

  • My hedgehogs name is HAZEL!!!! Hazely Puff!!! She likes to poop and run on her wheel at the same time.

  • Great video! Very informative. You inspired me to do one of my hedgehog. :)

  • can u change there habit to sleep at night and wake up in the day light

  • not really, it's not that bad though. It's not like they just turn off during the day. They can wake up and be friendly. I forget that my hedgehog is nocturnal sometimes, but he played with me all day and slept all the next day so at night he was still active. It depends on your hedgehog i'm sure.

  • You can but it's not good for them.

  • please don't! they're nocturnal by nature, and it's only fair that you keep them that way. their eyes are more photosensitive, for one, as they're not used to being awake and functioning during daylight hours.

part of the deal with having a hedgehog is recognizing that they're nocturnal; YOU should adjust to THEIR schedule, not vice-versa. but if you can stay up with them, you're bound to have some quality time with your hedge!

  • Thanks for the information, it was very helpful..and very true. I have a hedgehog named Stanley aswell :)

  • oh thank you for the video!

My baby hedgehog is about to come home to me on Tuesday (it is Sunday)

we are getting him from a breeder and Im trying to find out a lot about hedgehogs and stuff and I was wondering when I bring my hedgehog (his name is Spike) home, will he miss his mom a lot and like will he eventually get used to me (I will be handling him A LOT)

  • He will get used to you

i got one yesterday and it's already used to me.

Hedgehogs are very individual just like humans so it depends on the hedgie you get, but since it's from a breeder you are probably fine.

  • thanks :)

Spike is home with me now (my hedgehog) and he is very much used to me. I love him so much and every day we play for hours =] he never spikes up when I go to get him anymore :D

  • I am going to be getting one, is is true they eat catfood? if so what kind. I have done research and they sound like great pets but what kind of cat food do they eat?

  • They eat Dry high quality catfood

  • they eat dry cat food and occasional mealworms as treats. some like fruits, too, but not mine....

  • @crazylazy45 welllll....actually they should have a high fat high protein high quality cat food.find a cat food that had smaller pellets so it can eat them in managable bites.freezedried crickets and mealworms work good for back up bugs.but also have a little habbitat full of live crickets and a carton of small mealworms.this is the best diet.also dont feed them fruits the fruits have to much sugar.veggies r ok,carrots work good.

  • @crazylazy45 veggies:D fruits are sugar packed and could hurtthere tummies..so lettuce<carrots things of that nature work. And a commercial cat food

  • Thanks! Learn alot from this vid.

I was looking into getting one at some point in time so I choose to start gather info now so thanks again!

Oh, your hair looks bad ass!

  • ok thanx

  • Thanks!

  • can you potty train them? do they poop all over you?

  • i don't think you can potty-train them, but he rarely poops on anyone (he's polite). the only major hassle to having a pet hedgehog is that once or twice a week, you have to scrub their wheel, as they poop all over it every night while running. and every other week or so you need to bathe the hedge himself. other than that, he's easy!

  • Thanks! Very informing especially since I've been considering about buying one. Thanks so much!

  • "grub tubs, if you will."

  • Well I have to say that was the most informative video about hedgehogs I've ever seen.

  • "No joke, all night" I love this video.
