Heavens but Pavarotti had a beautiful voice still in 1972! He was already becoming as big as a house here and it was round about now that the voice began changing and became white and colorless due to the huge amount of excess weight he carried. SUCH a pity! Bravissimi!
They enthralled as Callas and Stefano got older I understand the latter respected the former as the maestro/prima and vice-versa the new stars. Always room for preferences but never immature silly rudeness these people are amongst the greatest most talented singers to have ever lived and it's always a privilege to listen and share in modern media. Thanks for posting.
There are many fine singers around today, but they don't come within a bull's roar of these two. I think "epic" is the word I would use to describe them and their impact. Nothing they did on the operatic stage could ever be termed ordinary, because of the incredible talent and commitment they always displayed. This is simply the way superstars are, and in the Sutherland/Pavarotti combination we had it all.
@Operaddict How can you say that? First off, it's only been about 40 years. Not much in music can change that fast. Second, we have plenty of talent to fill the opera stages throughout the world. Netrebko, Fleming, Villazon, Florez, Kaufmann, Brownlee, Osborn...all amazing singers that have comparable voices to "Pav" and "La Stupenda". Personally I think Pavarotti's acting sucked in this rendition, he stood there like a log.

When you hear this, it really does prove that NO Tenor or Soprano today can even come close to this. There are some wonderful tenors and sopranos singing these roles, but not like this! All the acting on the world doesn't make up for what we hear in this clip!
Goose bumps. Forget Dessay. When I think of Lucia I think of Joan. Period. And this is why! When Bonying asked Pav to sing with his wife, a new era in opera was born -- Pav's Bel Canto era. It eventually led him to La Fille and to becoming "King of the Hi C's." Wonder if this would have happend without Sutherland. Later he abandoned Bel Canto (except for L'Eliser D'Amore), but I guess he had better fish to fry and a huge career ahead of him. I do so miss him!

May they both sing duets amongst the angels! I love them both and how wonderful to be able to hear this at the click of a mouse.

Yes indeed, goosebumps. Two so talented champions, the passing of both of these wonderful singers is the world's loss.

I respect their talent, but listening to opera singers makes me want to shove ice picks in my ears!

@The33eat You've converted me. I don't respect their talent. They suck and you suck for liking them.

Opera, when opera was OPERA...I am so grateful I was there. Today...a pale shadow of 40 years ago.

Sutherland & Pavarotti - one of the great opera duos of all time. Right up there with Flagstad & Melchoir.
